yea...well...it also makes kinda sense as he - in fact - is a rich boy who probably has a lot of crisis with his own existence. Beeing Harry Styles is a lot (I imagine). And he´s still very young. I hope he grows out of it and then expands his horizon.
@@vontrude3310 people think his success means he's had a charmed life free of heartbreak when the opposite is true. Professional success is not a magic coat that protects you.
Speaking of dont worry darling, you should do Chris Pine! He has a English degree from Berkeley and there's definitely pictures of him with his book choices
I think the point of the Underground Railroad’s writing style is to illustrate the detachment and underdeveloped identities experienced by people who suffer trauma their whole lives. They are underdeveloped because they are completely dissociated from themselves. You don’t hear how they’re feeling because they’re not feeling anything anymore. There is even a scene where Cora sees the shift happening in a child at the plantation, you get to see the dissociation kick in when he first experiences violence. As someone who grew up under very traumatic circumstances I loved the writing style, it was something I could finally relate to. That level of detachment is normal for some of us, and I really appreciate books like the Underground Railroad, which gives our way of experiencing the world a voice.
I think this is my difficulty with rating books - there's always some intention behind the writing style that we might miss out on by not understanding what the author was trying to do. But your comment made me want to read it, so I'll be checking it out!
I'm sorry to hear about what you been thru. For the things you pointed out about the books, that's good to know. So what you just explained is the same as what Jack said about the Joan Didion one, we will not appreciate or see the book impactful if we didn't experience it ourselves.
Thank you for sharing! I really agree that it’s clear that the characters are all heavily dissociating from their lives and emotions. I have not experienced trauma in that sense but I found that powerful as a reader. That it was so matter-of-fact and unemotional feels really disturbing and bizarre to an “outsider”, and it somehow made the trauma taking place feel even more powerful.
A few months ago I borrowed the year of magical thinking from my library because I knew I’d love miss joan. I read it and thought it was brilliant but I’d actually never really experienced grief before so I just appreciated the writing. One week later (not even joking) my dad died, and suddenly I understood everything she was writing about. I’m so gutted I don’t have my own copy because it hit home so hard after losing my dad!
After my dad passed, The Year of Magical Thinking was the first book that felt like it truly expressed what grief feels like. I’ll forever be grateful for her way of putting into words what felt impossible to express.
Man’s Search for Meaning is a book that influenced me so much in my psychology studies and on my way to become a therapist. Existentialism is such an important topic. However I find it always funny when Jack reviews a book that I love and he just thinks it is okay or doesn't like it. Reminds me that everyone experiences reading that book a little bit different and I really like this diversity :)
I think it's interesting though that he reviewed this from the perspective of, "I'm not getting enough personal insight." The prologue explains that Frankl wanted to write about his psychologist's perspective of what was happening in the camp, and that would help to to explain how he developed logotherapy. I think Jack just missed the point of the book - though obviously taste plays a roll.
Man’s Search for Meaning may not have the best writing but it was such an important book for me, I highly recommend picking it up if you’re having an existential crisis as it shows that meaning and peace can be found even in the worst circumstances
5:45 I finished Oscar Wilde's "Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast" yesterday, and hearing this and remembering Wilde's writing about pleasure makes me laugh
For Colson Whitehead's "Underground Railroad" I think he gave an interview where he basically said that the reason that you don't really get intimate details about the characters is because that was how he always perceived being taught about the real Underground Railroad - that people were still just treated as property even in the retelling of their escape to freedom, they were never truly given the chance to be actual people. You can tell that he chose to write it in a particular way when you read his other books - which I highly recommend that you do. His book "The Nickel Boys" was absolutely great writing.
Man’s Search for Meaning is one of my favourite books of all time! To me, what the book was telling regardless of its writing style which was still pretty decent is very moving and important. This is quite personal but I don’t think every good book or engaging book should necessarily have an amazing writing style. Books like Man’s Search for Meaning, especially the second part, aimed to inform readers almost as if an academic writing, and it might engage us by making us think and reflect. From that perspective, it was quite spot on actually and I found it helpful to see that ‘dull section’ in the book. I mean writing style didn’t absolutely take away from the overall value of that book for me and I’d recommend it anyone. Also, the whole point of book goes way beyond holocaust so comparing it with other fantastic books you showed may not be quite a fair comparison. Just because their overall points were different I think.

It is a well-written book, but it’s also really brutal. I probably wouldn’t have read it for that reason and definitely won’t be reading the book he wrote after this one.
I loved how Jack talked about being able to afford interior decor. It is true! I would put a lot of time and effort into interior decor if I could afford it. I think all of us would. But because we can’t afford every piece we see, we just stick to whatever is within our budget.
I feel like The Architecture of Happiness would make sense with the movie Don’t Worry Darling because they live in such a manicured design-heavy setting

Just finished reading The year of magical Thinking and (besides absolutely loving it) was also surprised by the amount of name-dropping she does. Like... why?
The year of magical thinking looks like a book just for me. Two years ago I lost two people and to this day it keeps resurfacing and I really struggle with this messy grieving process. I want to read it but also I’m scared it’s gonna crash my tiny fragile heart 🥲
I appreciated Didion having a combination of both her experience and the outside research on grief sprinkled throughout. The first half of the book I enjoyed better than the second, but ofc there were still a lot of tears. Also, for whenever you’re ready I also recommend Grief is Love by Marisa Renee Lee
I read The Year of Magical Thinking earlier in the year and I ended up rereading it immediately. My father passed when I was 12, my mother when I was 20 and now being 28 it was a bit of a full circle moment for me as it was 8 years between each. Grief does get easier year by year but despite that you still struggle and random things will trigger you. Joan’s thoughts really struck a cord and resonated with me and my grief. I think it might be an annual re-read for me just to revisit those feelings ❤
5:27 I'm a little disappointed that you referred to Frankl as a "prisoner of war" in a concentration camp. A fundamental grounding point in Frankl's life is his Jewishness and referring to him as a "prisoner of war," as if he had been jailed for something more than his religion, takes away from a critical foundation of Frankl's thought process and pattern of belief. Edit: Also holocaust narratives aren't a genre 6:44
I recently read the year of magical thinking and even though it was my first didion, I did feel a lot of what you described of her being a very clear practical person normally, in the way she researches and informs herself, and the way she questions with everything in this magical thinking, but while also just seeing that it's happening and it's not stopping so let's go, let's figure this one out. Despite having no close experience with grief, I did relate a lot as a very rational practical person that sometimes struggles to understand feelings because they often confict with logic. the book flows so beautifully and manages to explore such deep complex emotions in a way that feels more understandable without losing their intricacy. What an incredible read.
That book of Joan didion, year of magical thinking, helped me so much after my parents died. ( after like 6 month’s then I had room in my head to read t , sooo recognizable)
I read The Year of Magical Thinking without any previous knowledge of what the term meant, or the events that happened to the author. I was not in a good place mentally when Audible recommended it to me and I thought, 'Oooh, I could use a short, magical story right now.' Yeah. So I ended being completely devastates by the book, which was actually cathartic. The unexpected tragedy cause me to confront the emotions and situations that had been choking me for over a year and it was kind of a catalyst for be starting to process and heal.... I never know how to recommend this book other than to say, 'It is really powerful.'
As a Greek i cant help but correct you, Jack . So ,the word logos comes from the verb λέγω (legö) which in English roughly translates to "i say" ,so the noun would be "speech". In Greece, when we say logotherapy we refer to the process which usually toddlers and young kids go through in order to "fix their speech" ,to learn how to pronounce certain letters. However,in its english meaning the word logotherapy means what you said ,since the word logos can also mean "reason" and "meaning" ,in rare cases. I love your content, keep up your amazing work .
you know my favorite thing about these books is like it feels like books it feels like a real like you know go to the library novel books that you know you kind of the reason why you go to read something in a big book
λογος (logos) is actually a word with multiple meanings. it is most commonly read as speech in modern greek, which developed from the more ancient-leaning greek meanings of reason or (as you said) meaning. I think it makes the discussion even more interesting if you understand these other *drum roll please* meanings 👀of the word.
i’m late to this video but i saw your first one on Harry and had no idea we liked the same books😁 this list of books i have not read though. great video!
Love your reviews! 😀❤ Your thought process is so fluid and I really liked the way you express yourself. I'm definitely gonna try the Year of Magical Thinking. I feel that I have gone through somthing similar myself and would love to see how someone else dealth with and processed that kind of grief.
I lovvvv Jack and all his recommendations, but can we just take some time to appreciate how beautiful his home is? Plusss, his style? Ahhhh so good. And I’m not talking about Harry kkkkkkkkk
speaking of logos: logos (λόγος) = meaning/reason, logiki (λογική) = logic but also logos = speech which is how its used in words like epilogue, dialogue and (bella where the hell have you been) loca
Hearing how you talk about The Year of Magical Thinking makes me want to read this book, especially since my little brother just passed away a month ago.

I love your content, keep up your amazing work .
omg i was literally waiting for this video
i personally side eyed his literature choices when i heard that his favourite author is Charles Bukowski
Jack are you selling ur humour because im sold
you know my favorite thing about these books is like it feels like books it feels like a real like you know go to the library novel books that you know you kind of the reason why you go to read something in a big book
λογος (logos) is actually a word with multiple meanings. it is most commonly read as speech in modern greek, which developed from the more ancient-leaning greek meanings of reason or (as you said) meaning. I think it makes the discussion even more interesting if you understand these other *drum roll please* meanings 👀of the word.
watching Jack roasting books was all I needed to experience today!
Jack makes some of the best video titles ever. So quick-witted, I love it. "....I'm worried darling" like THIS IS LITERAL GENIUS
Happy birthday, Jack!
i’m late to this video but i saw your first one on Harry and had no idea we liked the same books😁 this list of books i have not read though. great video!
Loved the part 1, clicked immediately on part 2 ❤️ 2 of my worlds colliding, Jack and Harry! 😊
I was so pleased to see you had the same thoughts as I do about 'The Underground Railway' - and I feel similarly about Alain de Botton's writing too.
Unrelated but I LOVE Jack's Spice Girl t-shirt
absolutely makes my day.
harry might have read 'the architecture of happiness' to design Harry's House
Love your reviews! 😀❤
Your thought process is so fluid and I really liked the way you express yourself. I'm definitely gonna try the Year of Magical Thinking. I feel that I have gone through somthing similar myself and would love to see how someone else dealth with and processed that kind of grief.
”some of us are living a vida broka” hahahahhhaha im dead
I lovvvv Jack and all his recommendations, but can we just take some time to appreciate how beautiful his home is? Plusss, his style? Ahhhh so good. And I’m not talking about Harry kkkkkkkkk
speaking of logos: logos (λόγος) = meaning/reason, logiki (λογική) = logic but also logos = speech which is how its used in words like epilogue, dialogue and (bella where the hell have you been) loca
"He goes missing but there's nothing to miss" i felt that. Waiting for a quote book ngl
Hearing how you talk about The Year of Magical Thinking makes me want to read this book, especially since my little brother just passed away a month ago.
Why every book that Jack don't recommend, I just love it. And every book that he really loves, I just not catch the vibe 😅 yet, I still watch his videos 😂
