Foam removal in drilling mud | Additive Effects | BYK Additives

Foam removal and prevention in an aqueous lignosulfonate drilling mud. A blender is used to create foam in an aqueous drilling mud. Addition of a defoamer destroys the foam (foam removal). Switching the blender on again does not create foam any longer (foam prevention).
Filling the jug of a blender with 350 ml of an aqueous lignosulfonate drilling mud and close the lid. Start the blender with speed level 2 for appr. 10 seconds. Foam has built up on the surface. Open the lid and put some drops of the defoamer into the foamy mud. The foam does collapse (foam removal). Close the lid and start the blender again at speed level 2 for appr. 10 seconds. There is no foaming anymore (foam prevention).
