      Vanina Rodel 💜 Thank you so much for those comments! Lol I just wish people would let me know what they disliked about them so much that they felt the need to give thumbs down. It pretty much rolls off my back other than that, but it’s much harder on 9 or 10 year olds who put themselves out there snd were proud of their work and then feel like they got slapped down. My younger granddaughter refuses to even do anything on video after she saw her sister get a couple of thumbs down. Maybe I can get the older one, Zoey, to do another one day soon! 💜💜

    Its beautiful. I've just started my journey with alcohol ink and I find that I use way to much blending solution. I guess practice makes perfect. I love this look and I think I might have that dryer. Its a curler dryer. Thank you for sharing 💗

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! If you haven't tried it yet, you might want to try isopropyl alcohol instead of the blending solution. I prefer the alcohol as it's not as thick and doesn't leave gummy areas where the ink and blending solution do when they build up too thick. It's much, much cheaper, too! Be sure you get 91% or higher (preferably higher if you can find it) so you won't have as much trouble with moisture beads forming on your surface. Thank you for taking the time to watch and to comment! 💜😊

      @@LorrieBrewer thanks Lorries. I live in Ireland and the only place I can by alcohol is in the Chemist / Pharmacy it is so very expensive here and yes the blending solution is also expensive. We were meant to visit last November but had to cancel cause of Covid but please god as soon as all this madness ends I'll be on that flight and will be sticking my suitcase with it lol 😆. • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you don't have too much trouble with the yupo as a beginner. It is trickier to use and get good results from than NARA or Grafix just because of how easily it stains, but that is what I first started on since I hadn't heard of anything else I could use at the time lol. I hope you have a wonderful time learning to use your inks! Just remember to relax and have fun with it and not to be too hard on yourself as you are learning. 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An airbrush will work, but I haven’t ever used one, only seen others work that do. A heat gun will dry your alcohol too fast and will warp your yupo or craft plastic. I have tried with a heat gun and it absolutely did not work for me lol. Try doing a search for AI using an airbrush and maybe something will come up. I can’t remember who I’ve seen that used one. I think Lisa Jordan uses one part of the time, but other than that I’m not sure. Most people use an airbrush for AI flowers so I’m sure you can find quite a few videos on that. Janette Vivo does some amazing flowers with hers and some have very soft, wispy petals. You might be able to learn enough from those to paint wispy paintings that aren’t flowers with an airbrush if you wanted to. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help with that! If I run across someone who is doing good tutorials with an airbrush I’ll let you know! 😃

    Absolutely gorgeous, Lorrie!! I have studied your videos over and over. There's a learning curve. Practice, practice, practice. I purchased the Revlon's heat brush, as you have. Purchased the Yupo, Pinata colors, and metallic. I will purchase the paper you are currently using on this beautiful piece. Amazing how just one color can transform itself. I do have a questions:
    I have acrylic inks. Can I mix alcohol into them? I finally was able to find 99.9%. And, once finished, what do you recommend to protect your art? I have Liquitex Professional gloss medium vanish you would brush onto your piece.
    Would that be suitable? Love you, bunches! God bless you, and your little ones! Liz from Kentucky 🥰👍♥️🎨🌈

    ABSOLUTELY love this Lorrie!!! Love that you did it in real time, it really helps a lot! I truly enjoy watching your videos. I started working with alcohol inks about 3 years ago when doing a polymer clay project. After researching about the inks, I gave up the clay and now make cards with the inks. 😊 I took some time off late 2018 after my daughter passed unexpectedly but have recently gotten back into it. My skills have improved quite a bit compared to a couple years ago. I realize the more I watch you, I need to get that hairdryer! I just purchased denim the other day. I haven't worked with it alone yet. Will you do anything with the white background or just leave it? I bought some metallic rub ons which really give a soft subtle look. I forget the woman's last name but Nina somebody used them in her video. Thank you for all your GREAT videos! Sorry this comment was SO long!🤪

      😊 I don’t mind long comments when they are nice like yours! It’s the people complaining about my videos that get to me lol. I do just leave the backgrounds white, although I have used a stencil on some or added some gold leaf to some that I felt needed something. Your idea of rub ons would be perfect for those! I know it’s been a while, but I want to say I am very sorry about your daughter’s passing. I hope that your paintings can give you a way to memorialize her that you can truly love doing. 💜💜

    Hi Lorrie! I am loving your tutorials and love the results I am getting. Thank you so much for helping us newbies. I watched your video about attaching the craft plastic to the wood board and doing the resin. Do you have any other videos that go into finishes? I am wanting to varnish and attach to the wood board without a resin? I was going to use the 2 sprays that you recommend (multiple coats) and then attach to the wood using the system described in that same video but without a resin...is that okay?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the lovely comment! I don’t generally do videos on finishing out paintings, although I probably should. You certainly can leave off the resin. I just love the way it looks on a painting. Just make sure you use a permanent adhesive that will last. I have started using Liquitex gel medium to attach mine and haven’t had any trouble so far. Some adhesives will not stick to the synthetic papers very good after some time passes. I have also used Mod Podge, but not on any that I haven’t resined. I have seen others that use it without resin, though, so I am assuming it will stay stuck good. I am very happy to hear you are enjoying the videos!

    Lorrie....I really enjoyed watching your demo and the information you share. This is a technique I'd like to use but I'm not sure what to use for moving the ink. I tried using an old hair dryer of mine and it was a huge fail. I tried using a straw........not enough breath. Canned air is hard to control and the can is cold! So, I was wondering if a heat gun would be a good idea? I've been told to get an airbrush but they are very expensive and I really wanted to keep it simpler. What do you suggest?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a curling brush hairdryer that has a cool setting on it. I just took off the brush attachment and I have really liked using it. It’s very easy to hold and has a smaller opening for the air than a regular hairbrush does. I have tried a heat gun, but for me I felt like it dried the ink too quickly. I wanted something with the cool setting so I had a little more time to manipulate the ink without having to add more alcohol. Also, the heavyweight yupo you need to handle that kind of heat is more expensive. I haven’t tried an airbrush, but I have seen good results with them. Some people are using old CPAP machines and liking the way they work since there’s not a high air flow. I’ll put the link to the hair dryer I use down below so you can see exactly what I am using if you want to try something similar. Thank you for watching and I hope you can find something that works good for you 😃!

    Hey Lorrie.....I love your work and I bought the Grafix opaque white. I have been using Pinata for a bit and tried it. I used a can of air and the hair dryer like yours. With both of them I got granular substances from the inks. I tried some Tim Holtz Sunshine yellow and it was okay but the Orange of his had the same results, even when I used a straw. Help, help, help! What am I doing wrong?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have occasionally had that problem myself. It seems to happen most often if I have used too much ink, then had to use quite a bit of alcohol to thin it out. I think (but I’m no expert here) that it is the ink breaking down some. I’m not sure if it’s from the amount of ink or the amount of alcohol or the combination of too much of both. I lean towards thinking it’s from using too much ink since that’s when I notice it in my own painting. I wish I had a more concrete answer for you! Try using only a drop of ink at a time and see if that helps some. Also, the metallics like piñata brass will cause that graininess if they get overworked. I need to play around a little to see if I can figure out why that happens with no metallic on the painting though. Good luck! I hope you can solve the problem! Lol Let me know if you do 😃

      Thank you 😊! Hopefully someone will be able to start carrying it in the UK soon. It hasn’t been available in the US for very long. I’m sorry I don’t know of any good alternatives that might be available to you! I don’t know anything about what is available in the UK. If you haven’t tried the back side of photo printer paper, that is a much cheaper alternative than yupo. Just make sure you find a brand (usually the cheaper store brands) that doesn’t have a watermark on the back and that you only paint on the backside, not the glossy front. There are other brands of craft plastic that some people have used with success, but I have no idea what they are lol. If you have access to a local art/craft store you might be able to find something that would work just as well. Here in the US a craft store called Michaels sells a plastic craft poster board that some people use and like, but I haven’t tried it personally. Hopefully, you can find something a little cheaper than the yupo 😃

      Thanks Lorrie, my daughter and the family lived in the US for six years only coming home last year so I was frequently over. I have several wonderful friends and spent two and a half months last year even though my family were back home. Next week one of my friends is coming to stay, I can't wait. I would ask her to bring some but feel I am asking too much it being so close to her trip. I hope to come over in the Spring so I guess I will have to wait till then. I certainly will give the photo paper a try. I am an egg crafter and today I did this technique on an egg, I sprayed it first with a satin spray and used a straw to direct the flow, Because of the curved surface I used markers to lay down the alcohol colour, it worked well but then I overdid it, Next time I will learn when to stop! x

      😃 You had me stumped for a few minutes with that question lol. I had to look it up because I didn’t know there was a new version. What it appears is that they are the same thing, it’s just that the new version is yellower and the original is white. I do like this better than yupo most of the time. Either the Grafix or the NARA synthetic art paper are cheaper and don’t stain nearly as bad as yupo does. The NARA comes in several different sizes and in circles, squares, and rectangle, too. I haven’t decided if I prefer NARA or Grafix more. They are both good to me. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I hope the videos are helping you learn this technique 😃. MoeJangles First of all - Yay for the Bluegrass State! Lol I was born in Louisville and still have tons of family around Shelbyville and the surrounding areas. We don’t get to visit there often enough! Second - Don’t practice on yupo unless you just have tons of money to spend! The cheapest thing to practice on that is similar, and works just as good, is the back side of glossy inkjet photo paper. My favorite brand for this is Office Depot, but others use Staples brand with lots of success. I have used Kirkland from Costco, but I like the Office Depot better. It feels less “papery” for lack of a better explanation lol. Pretty much any inkjet glossy photo paper that doesn’t have a watermark on the back will work, which means most store brands. HP, Kodak, etc. have watermarks on the back so you can’t use them unless you want them in your painting lol. Be sure you only use the back, non-glossy side though! It will not work on the glossy front. The ink will literally not move on that side. If you want something a little closer to yupo but cheaper, and better than photo paper but a little more expensive, then try either Grafix opaque white craft plastic (get the original unless you want yellowish paper) or NARA synthetic art paper. I love both of them so I don’t really have a favorite. NARA has more options for size and shape, but Grafix is just a little cheaper if you get the larger packs (25 sheets) of it. If you start running low on alcohol you can try a 190 proof liquor like Everclear or something similar to paint with until things get back to normal. I hate the smell of any liquor (makes me feel sick) so I have never tried this, but I am hearing people are having lots of success with it. Praise the Lord for your continued healing! You are so right that it’s all in His hands and in His own time. I know He has a purpose for every single thing that we face in our lives even when we don’t get what we want, or don’t get it when we want it. I will be praying for your continued healing! I can’t imagine what it would mean to you to be able to walk again! By the way, (lol my brain moves too fast so I skip around subjects lol) if you haven’t already looked at her channel check out Katherine Babcock - Artistic Insanity. She is doing a series on alternative surfaces to use alcohol inks on. You can get some great ideas from her and she’s a fantastic woman who is happy to help and answer any questions you might have 😃.
