I will tell you a few use cases that I have been using it for for a while now and how you could be using it in your daily lives. I will also tell you exactly why I think you "Need" Unraid in your life. Not necessarily need but will want after watching this video. I hope you enjoy it :D

I was looking for a video that explains what unRAID is. This video talks about all the other features of unRAID but actually misses the whole point of what unRAID is (compared to raid) and why you need it (to be able to use different size disks and continually add disks to it)
Unraid is the best. Running it for a week now, love it!
I cam here for unraid, and I am staying because that handwave stuff is really really cool.
Not sure how I feel about the usb stick DRM...
It's fine. It only reads the USB on boot so if you just keep your server running, there isn't any degrading of the USB stick. It should last the life of your server.
you can also just buy another usb if the one your using fails, but make sure to back up the license key
I stumbled across your video, and appreciate the quick breakdown of UnRaid and what it can do. I watched almost two hours of videos before yours. Minecraft server, plex, nas and docker were all I wanted to confirm could run. Now I know I can do more with it. Appreciate the info.
Been running unraid for more than half a year now, and I love it. I have issues with storage as well, so I'm planning on upgrading it at some point.

Does it have to be installed and run from a USB drive, or can it be installed and ran from an internal SSD?

I just found out what a Nas is like 4 days ago so excuse my ignorance, do I need unraid if I plan to run home assistant, and Plex with sonnarr, radarr and overserr?
So, in your opinion. I'm not a super tech savvy person but willing to put in time to figure things out. In need of basic nas, plex server, cloud. Would you suggest building an unraid server or purchasing a commercial unit?
What I want to do install a type one hypervisor on my threadripper workstation. I want to then configure a windows 10 VM, a linux VM, and a hackintosh VM. I would like to run the each VM on its own M.2. ( my motherboard has three) then pass a graphics card and a second storage drive to each VM.
If I understand this correctly, I will need an M.2 drive, a graphics card, and a 2.5 inch SSD for each VM.
My question is two fold.
A) Can this be done or am I misunderstanding something?
B) If so can I do it with unraid?
yeah should work like this. But iam having Problems Running Unraid on a VM with rx580... Just turns black after driver installation. Also i Wanted a bare metal Windows over vm. But my Nvme wont let me do that. As far as i know its because of the shtty nvme controller and some bug in the kernel.
I still don't get it. I can do all those things in Windows. Why switch?

Is that a dynamic mic? If so, it should probably point toward you since it’s pickup pattern is directional and very tight
There’s quite a bit of noise. I’m guessing because you’re having to amplify the mic so much to extent it’s tight pickup.
I'm 99% sure is not. It's a condenser mic with a large diafrag. That's why it picks up so much noise besides the fact that the room is not treated. Being dynamic and having certain pick-up pattern is not directly related

Can unraid run a file server and a web server on a 15 year old q6600 desktop?
It doesn't sound great to me. It sounds like it just wraps away some open source (FREE) tech, puts a super easy GUI on the front, add some lipstick, puts a few proprietary "value add" features and charges you for the privilege. Cost for convenience I suppose. But I get nervous when people talk about file shares, VPNs and phone apps without mentioning a single underlying protocol. So I can't tell if it will work with my other stuff or if it will impose it's limited, frustrating ways upon everything that interfaces with it. Similarly Plex does this. Cost and limitations for convenience again. Why set it up yourself when you can buy Unriad and plex off the shelf, accept it's limitations as you had no alternative anyway so they are hardly limitations.
On your VPN access, by the way, the correct approach is to run OpenVPN on your internet router. That way you can set your phone to be "always on VPN" mode and even block all traffic if it disconnects, just like corporate devices. Your phone appears for all intents and purposes to be on your LAN. It will get assigned an IP address on your lan and use your own PiHole DNS blocker config, firewall rules etc. etc. Yes, it DOES block ads in most apps for you. if you get the DNS setup right, you can usually just open a hostname only URL, like nas/ from anywhere in the world. Top Tip... don't try and use UDP. Go straight to TCP, the minimal lag is made up for by resilience.
Oh, with the right firewall rules, that VPN access works both ways. So while you are out and about in the world, your LAN can reach out to your phone, ping it, access it, log where it is, etc. (Power saving on modern phones can make this unreliable though).

So.. when I need a strong OS X system. Can I use a cheap PC/server with UnRaid and use the performance from my good computer to use that OS X system, or will UnRaid use the performance from the server?
But can it run Doom?

Currently debating between unraid and FreeNAS. Is it homeassistant core or HassOS on unraid? And are you able to do USB passthru?
Sorry for the late reply, I know for a fact that on Unraid it is Homeassistant Core but you can actually run Hassio on it, it's just a little harder, as for USB device passthrough, I'm not sure where you mean the passthrough but it exists in both docker and VMs :D
@@TheMysticle there is a plug-in for a supervisor docker container but it's been floundering for me the past few days, going offline and not staying updated. Another TH-camr suggests just running the hassos image as a VM. Pursuing that avenue now. Thank you!
Great video and information. I do have a question, I am a drone pilot and currently using Google Drive to share files with my clients. I am wanting to move away from Google drive. I know I can setup folders and user accounts for my clients. My question is how easy (or is it even possible) to share the folder with my clients so they can access their media files when using unRaid. Thank you in advance for your help.

hmm your NAS build althought is pretty, i think you will have hard time to upgrade (add hdds) later
Oh yeah, it's a massive pain! It only takes 4, but laptop HDDs so not too bad but it means I need to but them with larger sizes ;)

Awesome video for someone who’s never heard of Unraid :-) I’m interested in using it to replace my 10 year old QNAP. I was curious to know the following (BTW, I work in Tech so techie responses welcome):
- what compact hardware are people using for it? I want to setup about 12-16TB total useable storage.
- how easy is it to configure shares (I currently mount a share onto my Google TV box, a Xiaomi Mi Box S, to stream media off my QNAP but it’s jittery and would love to use PLEX instead).
- how easy is to run VM’s (virtual machines)? Can you also run Mac OS as a VM?
- how easy is it to setup a VPN and share folders with family out of town?
- can it handle HEVC h.265 without problems? I guess PLEX would handle that?
- on a side note: can Unraid run apps like on QNAP/Synology or are those all via Docker (I haven’t really used Docker much).
- Is it possible to run a Docker app for crypto mining? :-)

Bad idea to run your OS off a thumbdrive. Did that for years. So many nightmares. Especially with encrypted RAID. Don't lose your key!

Not sure how you are supposed to make hand gestures with your hands essentially glued to your keyboard and mouse. His placement could be better, bu you would still need to take your hands off the keyboard to actually move your hands.
@@robertt9342 The point is having to reposition your hands back-and-forth between gesturing in the air and typing-mousing is something I find inefficient and physically tiring.
