We fly a Comanche 260B and have been to Telluride many times from our Northern California home and the departure ALWAYS makes me nervous! When flying the Comanche, we never see the VSI less than 800FPM even when full gross but Telluride makes us clime closer to 500 and it’s like not climbing at all. Good video and just enough detail!!

Such a silly thing, but I really like your camera placement haha. Most Comanche videos in this setup don't show as much outside visibility. This one makes your windshield look amazingly huge.

Wow! I'd have probably chickened out and waited for midnight when it might be cooler. If course all my flying was in south Georgia, too! LOL!

Well...I extrapolated on the performance charts and determined we should have plenty of power to make it. We were extremely light on fuel and only two slender guys. I also planned to abort if not off the ground by 2,500 ft. We were airborne at the 1000 ft markers. Also, once you are airborne and out of ground effect...if you can maintain altitude you won’t hit anything...terrain falls away.

    Gear up

Hi William, sorry for the late reply...I didn’t see these comments as I don’t know TH-cam very well :)
I pulled gear up very quickly after take-off to reduce drag. The plane outperformed my calculations which were based on extrapolating off the performance charts numbers.

I want fly in there one day. Density Alt. didn’t require you to hv to lean?

Hey Ken, sorry to not have responded earlier. I didn’t see these comments. Yes, I had to lean during run-up. It doesn’t look that way in the video as my prop control sticks way out when pushed all the way forward.

Might Bring up the gear a bit sooner and improve the climb performance. Thanks for sharing

Sooner than immediately after the rotate?
He was basically still in ground effect when he sucked the gear up

In retrospect I might have left it down longer...I tucked it right after I felt the cushion of ground effect.

@@shaneboulds5240 ya😂 put gear up before rotate and you get extra speed

@@dougbotimer4195 All I do is mountain flying. I have never landed less than 5000'. We tend to keep the nose down to build extra speed. Once we rotate we keep the gear down in case of mountain waves, gusts etc. More then 100 times I have touched a wheel when in ground effect. I had 5 passengers though.

What was the rate of climb?

    • @dougbotimer4195
      @dougbotimer4195  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Ed, once the gear was up initial climb was between 400 and 600 fpm (you can see the VSI in the video if you look close). We were extremely light with only two slender guys and minimal fuel. The VSI jumps around a bit as the turbulence was much worse than the video leads you to believe.

Fun, that was on my bucket list as well. Did Telluride and Leadville in successive years but we had a T210. Must try it again in our C182 someday. Met your relative, Nurse Jackie yesterday and she proudly showed me your vids when I told her I was a pilot. Your Comanche and kids are great. Thanks for sharing. Our Leadville landing at the end of this one...th-cam.com/video/Vb-BPUMpbbI/w-d-xo.html.

Hey Doug! Sorry for the late reply...I didn’t see these comments. I’m not a pro TH-camr by any means. My aunt Jackie is great! Glad you got to meet her. :) Wow, a turbo would have been nice. That said, the Comache did better than I had calculated. We were off the ground in 1000’ and climbed around 500 fpm once the gear was up and locked. And cool...I’ll check out your video...thanks for sharing!

Been there in Grumman cheetah and Cherokee 180. Resist urge to climb. Build airspeed and fly down the valley to gain airspeed. Opposite threshold is on a cliff. With runway/cliff behind you there is hundreds of feet of altitude. I recommend NOT taking off towards town in an underpowered aircraft. Wait!
