- After years of defense cuts following the end of the Cold War, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) changed tack after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Defense spending increased, and the alliance boosted its presence in Eastern Europe in 2017.
As Russia ringed Ukraine with forces in February, NATO responded by sending even more troops and equipment to the region.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has complained about NATO's expansion, claiming it's a major reason decided to invade Ukraine.

exactly, we joined NATO and EU cause Russia has been slaughtering us and occupying us ILLEGALLY all the time, 1919 piee treaty was signed Estonia won the war with Russia but ofcourse they didnt care about the piecetreaty and came back....mass deportetions.slaughterings and then later also tried to russify the country( it failedmiserably, we have almost nothing in common with Russia) we are not even slavic people, if Putin is mad that Baltics joined NATO then he should consider how much of a threat Russia has been to us for over 400 years..... they just cant stay away from our land!!

NATO itself was not expanding at Russian borders. It just so happened, that former Soviet countries near Russian borders, ASKED to join NATO, to get away from the threat of Russian invasion.
NATO does not occupy South Korea and Japan. South Korea and Japan are not NATO members, however they are military allies of the US. NATO does reside in Europe, for security.

@The governor Meh. Aggressive against Russia? It is the opposite. Russia invaded Karelia of Finland, whole Baltic countries.. even before NATO was existed. After the fall of Soviet Union, Russia still refused to return Karelia territory and yet Finland didn't join NATO or invaded it like Russia did to Ukraine (Crimea 2014).

LOL, Russia's argument really is basically: "I know you are but what am I?". Putin's actions have validated the rationale behind countries doing the thing he says he hates most: joining NATO.
The Russians are pushing a geopolitical Eurasian strategy, it basically ignores all rights of other peoples, just as Putin had made an Animal Farm chithole out of Russia.

As an Estonian we are glad to be in NATO and have Allied troops here. Russia is our bully. We want to be free from Russian rule.

Nordic countries are: Sweden 🇸🇪 Finland🇫🇮 Norway 🇸🇯 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Iceland 🇮🇸 politically, economically, religiously, culturally and geographically. They are members of the Nordic council.they were never under communism. Never part of the Soviet union and never the eastern bloc countries.

Let’s assume you’re telling the truth. If Russia is fighting with one arm tied behind it’s back, it’s only getting that arm broken and shattered. If it has to fight NATO, it only has one arm at most to do it. NATO would wipe the floor with Russia because of how poorly maintained the Russian army is right now.

Correct. Not much choice for Ukraine as a direct confrontation between NATO (UK, France, USA are nuclear capable) and Putin's Totalitarian Russia (nuclear capable) might see nuclear war. It might start with tactical nukes in the Ukraine. Having given Ukraine a pathway to NATO membership in 2008 Ukraine should have been armed more.

As an Ametican who was born in 1953 and is a veteran of 8 years military service I am shocked at Western Europe's behaviour , and the Baltic States behsviour.
Perhaps our leaders where just children when the ( cold war ) ended and the USSR peacefully left Eastern Europe.
Perhaps those Baltic Ststes should be reminded what happened in 1941 when another ( Western European Military Alliance ) invaded .
Maybe if Russia had not liberated them at the cost of millions of Russian lives their would be no ( Baltic States ) just German Colonies .
Maybe you're not old enough to realize that Russia also invaded Poland in '39 and invaded as USSR various brother USSR countries including the Baltics when there where signs of them wanting to be more west- European minded. You think it is just a coincidence Russia occupied the rich resources areas of Ukraine and the Crimea? Maybe for the gas fields on the coast of Crimea and the oil fields in Donbass. Russia is the aggressor here and made a huge mistake thinking they put in enough ethnic Russians in Ukraine to easily take over the country. This invasion put Russia under pressure to win and will ruin the country as it will take years and years to undo the damage done to it's industry, technology and agriculture. Russia is far more depending on Western technology and resources then they would admit they are. And no more gas and oil to the west means huge income loss and as they can't replace everything with tankers or fluid gas its a ticking timebomb....just wait and see when Putins war chest runs dry....they might withdraw faster then they ever invaded....

Even the Americas and English took a side in the Russian Civil War.
Large parts of Ukraine are ethnic Russian and the Crimea has a vote to join Russia, it's population is largely Russian.

Given "Europe" is a figment of somebody's imagination and neither a real continent nor an honest geopolitical macrocosm, I presume CNBC refers to the former socialist bloc countries located between the post-colonial states (west) and Russia (east). If so, go and tell Montenegrins how NATO is "defending" them, and from whom? While NATO is the one and only organisation ever to attack Montenegro, the so-called "Russian threat" is not how Montenegrins historically viewed Russia when Russia helped them to achieve their independence. Even in 2023, if Russian tanks rolled into Montenegro, the masses would toss flowers to their pathway. Similarly, Macedonians didn't feel "defended" when their country was shoehorned into NATO even AFTER the nation rejected the referendum of joining.

NATO doesn't take countries by force like Russia. Countries ask to join NATO because of Russian aggression. So NATO accepts them. If Russia didn't act aggressive towards these countries, they wouldn't need to join NATO.
"Eastern Europe doesn't need to be defended" thank you for your expertise. By that I mean complete ignorance, we almost certainly would have been invaded again, without NATO and EU membership. Russian aggressive rhetoric started almost as soon as USSR collapsed, main theme being need to defend the Russians that were moved to our countries during the occupation and were now being discriminated, their language banned etc. If you heard it in context of Ukraine, they were not the first. Nor will they be the last if Putin gets away with the invasion of Ukraine
