This shootout works if you are just trying to pick the top bourbon out of 16, but it doesn't really work for ranking the 16 since the losing three in the flight of the ultimate winner could theoretically be preferred over the winners of the other three flights. This was definitely a flight with some heavy hitters, and the losers would likely be a winner in another flight, including the first one. Accordingly, I don't think I would ever choose Knob Creek small batch over Blanton's or Elmer T Lee. I've never tried Bulleit 10 because I'm not a big fan of regular Bulleit...maybe I'll have to give the 10 year a try.
I knew Bart was going to pick Bulleit, it was a surprise to me too how good it is, and their Rye is good too, the mash bill for bulleit is rye rich and it shows, and for the price...good thing i have inexpensive taste!😜

Major mind job I'm guessing. My personal experience with my last bottle of Bulleit 10 after it opened up for a while was very favorable. It became very rich with a good kick of citrus. I can dig it. Interesting when you taste blind. Nothing else influencing you but simply the taste. Both of you had Blanton's as a pre-shootout favorite. Also Bart scored the Bulleit 10 as a 84 because it was too oak forward for his taste. Great job, I love the shootouts!
I think seeding the bourbons before the shootout is a crazy idea. What are you going to seed them based on?..... (A) Hype...something which basically feeds off itself. (B) Price...something which is often influenced by (A) and is not necessarily an indicator of quality. (C) Your opinions of which ones you think are the best...opinions generated previously which have been influenced by both (A) & (B) even if only on a minute subconscious level. The best thing about the blind shootout is that it can blow away all the preconceived notions away. Obviously the runner up in flight 2 might beat the winners of flights 1,3 &4, but this is the case with any elimination event...how often has your favourite team just lost a semifinal to the eventual winner who destroys the victor of the other semi..it's the nature of the beast. Loving the shoot out. Looking forward to the next two.
Great points Andrew. We are going to try something a little different in our next 16 bottle shootout. We are going to have different drams in front of us...or I should say possibly different drams. We will both work through the same 16 but our individual draws will be random. We want to try this to avoid influencing each other. I (Bart) actually like when we have the same 4 in the bracket but I think this will be an interesting if not slightly disjointed blind tasting.
