    Ragnar probably came up with the details of his plan after he was injured, but he's had the basic idea of using the Frank's religion against them to enter Paris for a long time, ever since Athelstan told him Paris was impregnable. That's why when he put on Athelstan's cross, he said "Forgive me my friend, not for what I've done, but for what I'm about to do". He wasn't putting on that cross to become a Christian, but to use Christianity as a weapon against Christians, which he knew Athelstan would not like. Ironically, Floki mudering Athelstan gave Ragnar exactly what he needed to conquer Paris - Athelstan's death and the desire to be reunited with him in heaven is what made Ragnar's "conversion" to Christianity believable to EVERYONE and gave him a way to enter Paris, using the knowledge about Christianity that Ragnar learned from Athelstan over the years. He knew if he was baptized, the Christians would be religiously bound to give him a Christian burial.
    Ragnar also knew Bjorn was the only one he could trust now that Athelstan was gone. Not his friend Floki, his brother Rollo, or even Lagertha, all people who have their own agendas and ambitions. I love that after allowing everyone else to fail last episode (proving Athelstan right), Ragnar finally called everyone out and confirmed so many things for the viewers - that he was never ambitious for power, he never wanted to rule, he blamed Lagertha for forcing him on the path to becoming Earl when she killed Knut, he blamed Erlendur and his family for forcing him to become king through their machinations, etc. The entire show, everything has been happening TO Ragnar because of other people's actions, Rollo, Lagertha, Horik, Borg, Floki, etc. and he's finally reached his breaking point and showed everyone who's boss.

    Even though on paper it looks like the rest of the series has 20 episode seasons, they still only aired 10 episodes a year in "half-season" chunks, so you really have 6 more 10 episode seasons. Even the show creator refers to the show as 9 seasons, not 6. The reason is because the actors and crew were originally contracted for a certain amount of seasons, but the show become so epic and popular that they needed to extend it, so they "doubled" the episode count without actually changing anything about the production schedule to get more years out of the original contracts, which were by "seasons" and not "years". So season 4, 5, and 6 each took 2 years to air, and you can consider 4a, 4b, 5a, etc. like their own seasons with a full year real life broadcast gap in between. The story is written that way which you'll notice as you watch it.

    And there you have the reason why the region is called Normandy in France (= norse mens land ). Rollo and his family history will become one of the most important viking, which impact is still seen today ( ancestor to several of the European royalties today ) because his Great grandson - William the conquer invaded England in the battle of Hastings 1066. ( Rollo was of Danish royalty ) So when the viking King of Denmark and England at that time died, William meant he was the true heir to the throne of Denmark and England.

    Good Reaction :^)... Most viewers were fooled by Ragnar faking his death, but not you two... It has been said already, but Rollo can not become a legitimate King. His children with the Princess will be the heirs. So everything that Rollo is doing from now on is for his family (and current powerful position). The French have seen first hand that Rollo is a legendary warrior, he also knows the Vikings tactics & culture... Ragnar should have helped Rollo become an Earl with his own Viking lands. He could have made a powerful ally , instead of an ever present problem/worry.

  • @MFBloosh

    By the way, it was Bjorn and his half brother Hastein (who is not in the show) that did the fake death in real life. Thinking it was Rome, they invaded the city of Luna, and when their plan didn't work out, they decided to pretend that Hastein had died and asked the leaders of Luna to give him a proper christian burial inside the city as it was Hastein's last request, telling them they would cease their raids if their deal was honored. Vikings were truly some of the smartest, most creative people of their time... And probably of all time.

    Love this reaction...u guys are on point like I was. So refreshing how u noticed everything, RAGNARS EPIC PLAN, I believe he came up with that plan while he was seeing odin/christ/athlestan too, sharing it with only Bjorn. U realised the Floki set up. The bear and the princess, most reactors dont get so fast or right...only thing i knew though was that Ragnar loves Lagertha and his sons way more than Althlestan, so he would definitely wanna be in Valhalla. Cant wait for season 4 reactions, been dying for ur season 4b reàctions since u started lol. Keep up the great work.
    I love Floki and Ragnar...u can tell Ragnar loves him but also hates what he did and is still angry. They both feel betrayed by each other.

    Great reaction! This is my favorite season, and I have been thinking about it a lot, and the more I think about it the more obvious it seems that Ragnar had a plan even before he went to Paris and the more genius his plan seems. Think about it, Ragnar was obsessed with conquering Paris, but he had several big problems he needed to overcome in order to do it:
    1. Even before going there, he knew that Paris was an extremely well fortified city, and the vikings had never tried to attack something like that before. So he knew from the beggining that the usual tactics would probably fail. But even knowing that, he still had to try them, because he needed to see Paris' defenses in order to learn what works against them and what doesn't. This was the first problem because:
    2. In order to attack Paris Ragnar needed a large force. So he had to ask many viking leaders to go with him and join him in the attack. But Ragnar knows very well how viking leaders are: extremely ambitious and always looking for power and glory. They coveted the power Ragnar had (for example, Kalf betrayed Ladgerda even though he loves her just to get power, and Erlendur's father, king Horik, had been murdered by Ragnar, so he hates him, etc). So not only Ragnar had to beat the french forces, he also was surrounded by people who wanted his throne. This was a *huge* problem for him, because this meant that if he tried to attack the city and failed several times (which he absolutly needed to do), they would use his repeated failure to undermine his leadership in the eyes of their men.
    3. The third problem was that Ragnar was mourning the death of Athelstan, his closest friend who he loved. And he was pretty sure Floki was the one who killed him, so he wanted to punish Floki. Although he wasn't 100% sure that Floki was the murderer, because at the time Athelstan was murdered, many people were mad at him for becoming christian again and rejecting the viking gods. So it was possible that another person had killed him.
    So what does Ragnar do? He uses all the problems as tools to solve the other problems. So instead of being disadvantages he turns them into advantages:
    first he let Floki lead the attack (and put all his effort into it too, trying to prove his worth to Ragnar, who had encouraged him previously). This way he kills three birds with one stone. This is a punishment for Floki (Ragnar knew the first attack was very likely going to fail because Paris was extremely well fortified and they hadn't seen the french defenses before), but more importantly, this allows Ragnar to stay in the back for most of the attack and observe the french defensive tactics, while avoiding being blamed and undermined in the eyes of their men by the other viking leaders when this attack inevitably fails, because he wasn't in charge of the attack. So basically, he used his desire to punish Floki (the third problem) as a way to avoid giving ammunition to the other viking leaders (the second problem), while simultaneously learning the tactics the french employ to defend the city (first problem). F*cking genius. And the punishment for Floki was almost poetic, he turned Floki's own faith, the thing that made him kill Athelstan, against him.
    After that, Ragnar let the others try their own ways, knowing they would probably fail too. At this point Ragnar has been able to see all the french defenses and everybody but him has tried to conquer the city and failed.
    Then he uses their failures against them (what they would have done to him) in a public speech, basically putting everybody in their place.
    But now he still has two problems: the pain for losing Athelstan (and the fear of not seeing him again) and a new one: in the attack he had suffered serious injuries. So what does he do now?
    Again he uses one problem to solve the other, and vice versa. He talks to the french and asks them to baptize him, saying that he is a dying man, and that he wants to see his christian friend when he dies. He uses his pain for Athelstan's death and his physical injuries as advantages. As well as the strength of the religiosity of the christians (which he had witnessed first hand in the attack, when the princess raised the morale of the french soldiers by raising the holy banner), which he uses against them. This also gives him an extremely rare and useful opportunity for a king: to learn what everybody around him really thinks of him. This way he also confirms that Floki killed Athelstan.
    In summary, he overcame all the disadvantages by turning them into advantages, returned to Kattegat with all the glory and the riches, and with not only his power and his name intact, but much more powerful in the eyes of everybody, given that he humiliated the other leaders publicly, and literally returned from the dead to single-handedly conquer Paris.
    PS: Fun fact, the trick of pretending to be dead to conquer a fortified city was used in real life by the vikings, but not on Paris and not by Ragnar. This tactic was used by Björn, in an italian city that they thought was Rome, although it wasn't (apparently they went there with a large force because Hastein, a viking leader, got the idea of making Björn the new roman emperor). They tried to enter the city and failed, so they sent messengers saying that the viking leader Björn had converted to christianism and that he wished to receive christian sacraments and to be buried in christian ground. Then everything happened as in the show.
    Also, Rollo's history as a french nobleman is very interesting, he ended up becoming extremely important and famous. Apparently his decendants created the Duchy of Normandy. The descendants of Rollo and his men became the normans, lending their name to the region of Normandy.

    • @firstlast55555
      @firstlast55555 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, agree with all that, Ragnar's problem solving abilities are genius, just like Ecbert's. The main difference is Ragnar is reactionary and uses his brilliance as necessary whereas Ecbert is malicious and actively uses his brilliance to fulfill his ambition - whereas Ragnar is not ambitious, just curious. There's a lot more to Rollo's story and fame that what you wrote, but I think it's a little spoilery to talk about that at this point in the show when the reactors don't already know the history. But yes, the lands that the Charles promised Rollo became Normandy, but technically Rollo is already a "Norman" - which literally translates to northman, and Normandy literally translates to "land of the northman" (meaning Rollo).

Such great scripting that Egbert tricks his followers in episode five and then Ragnar does the same in episode ten but even more slyly. These two characters are so damned good playing off each other. Are you watching the uncensored versions now? There's an episode in the second half of season 4 that you must watch extended, because one of the most important scenes of the entire show was cut from the US broadcast version for time. I'll let you know before you get there, and I'm sure tons of other people will too.

      @@kyuujinreacts None of the official streaming sites in the US like Netflix are uncensored, but I'm not sure about Canada. If you get the European version it will be uncensored, if you get the American it will be censored. If you see nudity in an episode, it's uncensored, and if there are episodes in the season list that are longer than 44-45 minutes you'll know it's uncensored since all of the censored episodes are cut down to 43-45 min.
      Here's a test, episode 4x03 is over 48 min, if it's only like 43-45 min on your service than it's the censored version of the show.

    I'm not sure if they're speaking modern French in the show but at this time period the type of French they'd be speaking would be unrecognizable today, it'd be heavily Germanic, the Franks were a Germanic 'barbarian' tribe originally, not much different from the Vikings before becoming Christian. So maybe they're actually using the old dialect and that could be why it's hard to understand for you. Or, more likely, they're probably just speaking modern French. Also as far as I know, Princess Gisla is the only actual native French speaker.

    • @kyuujinreacts
      @kyuujinreacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh they're definitely not using modern French xD but I've seen very ancient French documents and I know that even if we wouldn't be able to understand everything, some words do resemble modern French in the old dialect, that's why we need the subtitles to tell what's being said, but we wouldn't need them nor the context to guess the idea being some of the things said xD
