    Foster went on to become a fine Lightheavyweight Champ. Jones also was a blown up LH but experience made the difference here...Good fight on such short notice for Foster...

    This was NOT a good example to cite for Foster's inability to compete against heavyweights. Jones only weighed 182 pounds, and was essentially a light-heavyweight himself. Jones "straddled" the 2 divisions, and had fought for the light-heavyweight title against Harold Johnson just 5 months prior to this particular fight, weighing only 171 pounds in the process. In fact, Jones started his career as a middleweight in the late 50's before moving up to the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. No, this was more of an example of a young, inexperienced Foster taking the fight with very little training (he only had 9 days' notice) rather than an example of him not being able to handle the heavyweights and/or carry his power into the heavyweight division. Jones may still have been able win if he had had a rematch with well-trained Foster at a later date, but it would not have been because of a weight disparity. Foster's trouble with heavyweights always came against fighters who weighed well over 200 pounds, not fighters whom were barely over the light-heavyweight limit (as Jones was here.)

    Doug Jones was a good fighter. He countered foster left jabs with a good right left combination a couple of times.

    Foster had the height and reach on Jones, but again, the power he had as a LH just did not translate as a heavy weight. Not only did he never back Jones up or knock him down, he never really hurt him.

Foster's trouble with heavyweights always came against fighters who weighed well over 200 pounds (Ernie Terrell, Zora Folley, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Frazier), not fighters whom were barely over the light-heavyweight limit (as Jones was here.)

    Jones was a small solid heavyweight who gave Ali a very good fight losing a narrow decision.

    Nice fight. Foster had trouble with guys who could take his punch. Foster vs Archie Moore as LHW who wins?

      Great question and one I’ve pondered. I think Archie may have been a little too strong.

    Foster was one of the best light heavies of all time, but, he could not carry his power over into the heavyweight division.

    What a war. Amazing that a 174 pound man had to fight in the HW division back then.

    lol u guys crack me up with the heavyweight vs light heavyweight acting like it makes a difference even though jones was 182 and foster is 174 like a 8 pound difference so what

      Agree. I love Foster one of greatest lh of all time. He was beaten here by a more experienced fighter on a short notice appearance not a true heavyweight. Jones underrated got great work done against the best heavies of a very tough era.

    Heavyweight vs a Light Heavyweight. Foster weighed 174

      Yep... a whole 8 lb lighter.

    Foster didn't use his reach and speed in this fight. He became much better when he punched from a distance for more of his shots. A typical example of him lazily letting Jones get close is at the 13:00 mark.

    Bob Foster just could not go against the heavyweights, after so many dismal fights it should have been apparent to his handlers that the HW division was not for him, but managers don't always do what is good for there boxer

    • @shadowsnake8989
      @shadowsnake8989 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bob himself admitted that back then that's where the money was. Quite a few guys from Patterson to Ellis had managers that moved them up from their original weights up to heavy but not everyone can get there and do as well. And yeah I agree management is sometimes more concerned with their cut then the welfare of men like Foster.

      johnny brize Although Doug Jones was also a blown up Lightheavyweight. Foster was young here and became a fine LH Champion. Doug Jones broke Ali’s calling the KO round with a close decision loss to young Clay...Good fight here for Foster on short notice...

    Knowledgeable boxing crowd gave Foster a hand at the stoppage, knowing that Foster took the fight on short notice.
    I wonder if today's crowds would do the same?

  • @shakeAbooty88
    @shakeAbooty88 ปีที่แล้ว

    19:53, Jones is holding to tire Foster. Clamping his wrist against his hip. The ref looks at Foster and says, "You're holding." 😛
    Good stoppage though.

    Jones is just too much for foster. too skilled and experienced. you can see how he played possum and got foster to shoot his load, then turned it up with hard counters later
