Affirmed was such an apted name for that horse. He dug in and never relinquished.Great horse not in the same class as Secretariate (SP) or Seattle Slew but my favorite.
I bet Alydar would have won one of the triple crown races if he hadn't have injured his eye. But who knows? Affirmed was a great horse too! Just to see they battle and be great rivals with one another truly shows this sport. These two were a great example of racing's best performances. They are legendary champions.
Maybe only a born Kentucky girl would remember this race so vividly, mainly because I had a HUGE crush on Steve Cauthen! I was 13 and I thought he was the most charismatic boy ever! And he won the derby!
I love this, Affirmed is the grand dad to my 23 year old Affirmative Shadow.
RIP: Affirmed. There will NEVER be another horse like you!
Alydar, like Sham 5 years earlier, was one of those great horses who picked the wrong year to be born.
Jesus, an 18 yr. old kid riding that stallion. Great horse and a prodigy jockey.
Affirmed was simply brilliant that year the belmont was sensational.
RIP Alydar
Affirmed and Slew were my favorites. Affirmed sadly has be so under rated. He and Slew'both, were so lion hearted.

I also have an Affirmed horse. He is 32 years old. He was not a good race horse, but an amazing jumper.

Good ride by Cauthen, laying off the blistering early pace.
Another 1/8, and it would've been Alydar. Two great horses, never forgotten.
The last real Champ....beat Alydar was not easy...did it three times..amazing...
My favorite horse of all time! (Sorry Alydar)

I was at this race... I was selling tshirts. my tshirt said: "Believe It... Alydar is Affirmed!" The guy I was selling for had bet the farm on Alydar.
Haha. Same here! I wonder how many horses Affirmed sired. That would be one big family tree.
1978 was the last year the triple crown was won 33 years i was born that year 1978
the jockey is Steve Cauthen, he was 18
Steve Cauthen, great jockey
Any horse that wins the Triple Crown is great!
Alydar did a great job too, so did Barbaro and Street Sense
Alydar had no problem changing leads in the mornings. For some reason he rarely changed leads during the races.
Actually, Affirmed beat Alydar seven times out of the ten that they raced each other. I just think Cauthen was the better jockey.
Alydar was a better horse
Wow. The jockey was young. Exactly how old was he?
He was 18!
agreed...
@cf1970 Ok thanks!
