When you had / attended a baby shower you gave bottles, nipples, diapers, rattles, teething rings, brush & comb sets, diaper pails, bottle brushes, sterilizing pots, etc... if you gave clothing items, the colors were white, yellow, light green or light blue, i.e. unisex colors. The ultimate gift was a silver spoon and/or a silver tube to store the birth certificate. Nothing was gender specific. These " reveal " parties are just another excuse to have a party and expect gifts. The parents will spend more on the party than they will receive in gifts because you can now purchase the aforementioned items, with the exclusion of the silver spoon & silver tube at DollarTree.
Sounds a lot like you don't have children. Having gender specific items is very thrilling for a parent. And while the other items are important, it makes you feel like your child was thought of specifically when you have an item that is not unisex. I can say that because I experienced it myself. Also, a reveal party is a nice way for Mom, who can no longer attend "regular" functions, to spend more time with her friends in a more relaxed "expectant mother friendly" environment.
ALSO, the things you get at Dollar Tree, while cheap, often give children rashes and/or need to be used in more quantity because they aren't as good as the less generic brands.

I have 3 kids now and I wish I went all out with the parties with my first child. It’s the only time you get to really do all that stuff because it’s old news when your second and third come along. No one is going to throw you a second and third baby shower or come for the next reveal party. Your first child is the exciting one when everything is new. Everyone is like “OMG your pregnant!” With the second it’s like “cool, your pregnant.” Third is like “your pregnant? Again?” So enjoy it :) go all out and take tons of pictures.

I didn’t want to have a huge party for a reveal but I just invited ppl who meant the most to me to get the news of the gender and it’s just a beautiful moment I actually loved the reveal more than the baby shower but it’s just an experience next time I think I i won’t have one but for your first child you should do it even if it’s small if it makes you happy do it
