Great easy to build circuit . A good one every electronics person needs to build and play with.
Just a point to watch for. All unused inputs in cmos should be grounded or tied to vss. However the outputs of any gates can be left floating as they will go to the appropriate rail voltage determined by the inputs. Also as you have used a Quad nand gate the three unused nand gate outputs want to go high (vss) but you have tied them to ground and those outputs are short circuited as,a result and will draw excessive current. Measure your power consumption with the outputs shorted to ground and left floating to confirm.

Well made point. There is no reason to tie outputs if inputs states are defined.

Fun stuff. The noisy circuits were always my favorites on my Radio Shack 150-in-1 kit.
Tip: Should you need to have a good square wave output use the signal here tied to both input pins of another NAND gate and get a clean signal off its output.

Great video. I thought that only the inputs should be connected to GND, why connect the outputs too?

Sir you need to know this content is helping me so much and I'm learning more how beneficial it is to patiently take the time and listen to what you say in these lessons, is there potentially 4 oscillators on this chip? If was to x4 this circuit?

Hooray, my favourite circuit at last. There are a few tricks worth mentioning. Adding two resistors to the feedback circuit with a diode in each allows the mark space ratio to be changed. One oscillator can drive another and thus provide a flash cadence. The output can be used to drive an high impedance speaker (80 ohms) or an audio amp. It is worth adding a low value resistor in series with the output, to protect it from overload short circuit, typical value 270 ohms. This is a really versatile IC build block, it finds applications in all sorts of places, such as metal detectors, audio pulse modulators, voltage controlled oscillators, and voltage multipliers to name but a few. The HC version is my choice, as it gives a bit more output drive without much reduction in supply voltage range.
Thank you for finally giving it a mention.

I certainly enjoy projects with blinky lights. My wife not so much but she does support my return to electronics after nearly 20 years.

Who doesn’t love the blinkenlights? I recently used the CD4093 to make a magnetic alarm thingy. Good fun and a versatile IC!

This is sooo easy! Now, I'm gonna have to build one to be a variable clock to step variable frequency sine and cosine waves (RPi/Arduino/ESP32/ESP8266 generated), one to drive and X axis mirrored galvanometer (scanner) and other to drive a Y axis mirrored galvanometer (scanner). The other 3 nand gates will step 3 more quadrature oscillators. Just add a ~$100 diode laser, plus a mixer and I'll have my own home laser show.
This old laserist loves flashing lights too, especially with Floyd. Thanks!😎

Used a 486 just about daily in the Military. We needed one to check Teletype and other data signals. Yea they still had teletype. Wish I had on at hand. Damn Fine scopes.

I've been looking for a ic that can handle 3 LEDs or any light bulb and 13.6 volts
The old cars use a motor to step the lights on so you get an effect where 3 lights turn on and off in sequence

Do you have some unused outputs tied to ground? Is that okay? I understand inputs but not sure if you want to tie outputs to ground.

You can call me crazy if you want, but building diy oscilators are the reason why I didn't bought wave generator for few houndred bucks xD
I know they are not perfect, but still, they fulfill their purpose ;D

A lot to like in this video. Fun, easy, and instructional circuit for beginners, with a helpful look at the waveform. Prompted some interesting comments too. Also nice scope, so much chunky tactile knobby goodness. 😁 I just missed out on a similar model, a 465 on eBay.

it seems you have 4 parts i think the last is a "resistor" it above the led. what type if its a resistor is it? you have the black thing connected at the end of the video to your scope.

    • @TheEmbeddedHobbyist
      @TheEmbeddedHobbyist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a current limiting resistor for the led. Led forward voltage (2.0V) for a old style red led. You select the value by taking the led forward voltage away from the output pin voltage which will be the same as the supply. And divide by the current you want through the led.
      So 7V supply 2V led = 5V across resistor. If you want 10mA through led, then it's just 5/0.01 = 500 ohms. Or 470 , 680 in standard values.

It's a 1k current limiting resistor. It is not part of the oscillator. I'm pretty sure I mentioned the voltage on the video, but if I didn't it's 5VDC.

Actually without IC 4093 ,use Resistor-Capacitor in series/parallel ,you will get oscillation. But you insert IC 4093 trigger my inspiration that how to troubleshooting a PCB containing thousands of electronics components testing without desolderng out Each components for checking components individual faulty/defect. Today's electronics factory are testing top secret PCB proprietry motherboard. You just Grounding all the surrounding circuits and openup the suspected default circuit .you can inject Voltage/Current to check for default circuit . You do not need their circuitry (Patten Copyright top secret) for troubleshooting !!! Otherwise you have to buy billion/million dollar Incircuit/Offcircuit tester machines to to test SMT PCB boards .
