Easy to talk about all the things that went wrong for India, but worth mentioning a couple for Australia as well.
Cam Green missing out on the series through injury. Would've been handy at 6 in place of Marsh (or even opening?)
But the big one is Hazlewood going down in Brisbane. With a 3rd quick, I don't think India are avoiding the follow on, and then they're probably losing that game.
Swings and roundabouts I suppose. Just stoked we won

Yeah man, can't get enough of so many people ridiculously pointing out what went wrong for india but many of them hardly analysing how the australian team had performed so well despite all the odds against them!
They have definitely been a way better side than India (saying it as an indian) and clearly outclassed us in almost all aspects!

While I think Green was definitely a big out, I dont think we missed him as much as we missed an opener for the entire series, it was just a selection issue that we kept picking Marsh over Webster.
For the first 3 tests McSweeny and Khawaja scored 135 @13.5 from 12 Innings. Its pretty tough to win games when you're effectively starting at 2/20 every game.
      Look at the scores:
      8 UK
      10 NM
      0 NM
      4 UK
      13 UK
      39 NM
      10* NM
      9* UK
      21 UK
      9 NM
      4 NM
      8 UK
Going back to Green/Marsh/Webster, it looks pretty clear that Webster is a quality bat and handy 4th seamer. Just from the limited sample that we've seen, he looks more comfortable at test level with the bat than Green, who is still developing. Even when Green has scored test centuries, he plays and misses A LOT, which wasn't a feature of Webster's innings on a pretty hairy SCG wicket. I do believe that there will be room for Webster and Green in the same side, especially in the subcontinent.
This would allow Australia to go into the match with only one genuine seamer and two spinners, then have Green and Webster share the load of the second seamer.

    • @opalruby13

@@levipeterken4020Not being forced to bat twice in a row, which can happen if you’re batting second in a Test match and your team has scored over 200 runs fewer than the other team scored in their first innings. Instead of batting again to build a lead they might not need and wasting time in the match, the other team can make you bat again straightaway.

    • @willyw9379
      @willyw9379 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@levipeterken4020 To avoid the "follow-on," the side batting second must not trail by more than 200 runs at the end of their innings. The follow-on is not mandatory. The captain who batted first is allowed to request the "follow-on." Sometimes, for tactical reasons, the captain will not "enforce the follow-on" but elect to bat and extend the lead.
A famous match involving India and Australia occurred in 2001. It was the second test, played at Eden Gardens, India. The Aussies scored big in their first innings and bowled India out cheaply. The Australian Captain, Steve Waugh, asked India to bat again. However, through a massive partnership with Dravid and Laxman, India scored an enormous total. India ended up winning the game easily. I think you should look for a game highlight video. I'm an Aussie, but I loved India's incredible skill and determination to overcome one of the strongest Australian teams ever to play cricket and win under the most challenging circumstances. Truly breathtaking!!! Laxman and Dravid were Superman dressed in white.

I think the case in previous two series in Aus was that Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, and Lyon all the test in the series and ran out off ammo at the backend of the series. The injury to Hazlewood was a blessing it brought Boland and Aus won all the tests that Boland played. I was also rooting for Jhye for the 5th test in place of Starc. Starc as usual bowled filth in the 2nd innings but thanks to Boland and Webster Aus weren't short of other seamers.

An important factor in most of these series has been tactical captaincy. Rahane was excellent in 20/21; Paine was unimaginative and had a tendency to panic and not consult senior players with more experience against India. Cummins is a poor captain of spinners; when Smith took over for Indore in 2023 he expertly managed a three spinner attack. In this series Rohit seemed remote and (apart from the usual brainless tactics against the tail in Brisbane which allowed India to avoid the follow-on) Cummins was pretty good.

Jokes aside, this Indian core deserved a WTC if that's the new barometer but not to be.
Pujara, Rahane, Ash are already done, Rohit, Virat & Jadeja may not be part of the next cycle.

I think the 2018 Boxing Day Test was also notable for having a terrible wicket. The ball was failing to carry through to the keeper in the first over of the match, but then started to break up after iirc, two days. The apex of a 'win the toss, win the match' pitch. People were keen to defend it, though, because the MCG had been (deservedly) rated poor the previous Summer for rolling out the absolute pancake that saved Cook's career and ended Jackson Bird's, and having the MCG lose its hosting rights was completely unthinkable.

Australia deserved to win this series - no questions there . Though if you look at 20/21 series, just as you could say Aus had a chance in that series, one could just as easily say India could've won that series 4-0. Ind won at MCG & Gabba. In adelaide they led after the first innings and a half decent second inning and Aus batters could've collapsed. As for drawn SCG test, 30 more minutes of Pant on that deck or Umpires call against Pujara and injurires to Vihari/Ashwin Ind was within winning distance.
Same with 2018/9 wherein the only test Aus won in perth was on back of some rear guard tailend batting from Australia
