  • We made a metallic frame with a stable basis to support it and we also made some holes on it in order to be able to be screwed on the spot where it will be located.

    1- What sheet thickness you can weld?
    2- How many welds before it must be stopped to let it cool?

  • @cphVlwYa
    @cphVlwYa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You could get even higher amperage with two secondarys in parallel with one turn each and then wire those in parallel. It would lower the voltage, but with the thickness of that cable, I don't think you would loose to much more to heat.

    Awesome fabrication work, well done. I have an old school spot welder from the 50's, it's an amazing machine, my son has a new one and it's already fried. This spot welder in the video is very similar to the old one I have. They work incredibly well, just don't over do it, allow time for them to cool or they will fry. Thanks for sharing that video, really well done.

    Very Nice! I'm glad you decided to cool it as many people choose not to cool their homemade spot welders. I would consider putting a shroud around and behind the fan so that way it doesn't suck in the same air as it tries to push it but ahh what do I know i'm just some kid! Love the video!

      +fuckin kazars Sorry that this video was unable to hand you a welder with no effort, intellect or tooling required.
      Fabrication is on the most basic level making the tools to make the tools to make the part.

    • @RogerMurphy
      @RogerMurphy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +fuckin kazars This project isn't for you. It's for normal people that can figure it out. This is just how he did it. The wiring is the only necessary part, make the rest out of wood. If you need someone to hold your hand and explain how to do things differently, them you don't need a spot welder. You wouldn't know what to use it for.

    • @Eytaris
      @Eytaris 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Viru Sinstall technically speaking, a spot welder is used for a certain task (usually, welding thin pieces of metal) so it's not really surprising if you need a welder to create that. you could make one of these with bolts only, even if it's a pain in the ass, take far more time to make it and it's not as strong than welded passes, but it should look good, leave some external rust and you're in post-apo setup :p

    • @YourSolutionss
      @YourSolutionss 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Robert Nun'ya Yes this is DIY! As long as you have a welder you can make this, everything else can be done with hand tools, hacksaw, file etc. Actually you probably don't need a welder and could assemble most of it with bolts and pop rivets if you thought carefully about the design.
      Yes it takes longer with hand tools, however it is possible. A grinder makes it faster. I don't have an anvil (yet) I just find other heavy or correctly sized item in my garage to bend/bash around. A true DIY person finds a way to get the job done rather than wishing they had more tools. :-)

    CLICK BAIT!! This is NOT DIY, try title: "Building spot welder WITH Pro tools"
    A DIY doesn't consist of owning Pro power tools like:
    - Multi cutting chop saw 1:18
    - Tig welder 1:25
    - Bending machine 2:20
    - Colomn drill 2:55
    - Metal lathe 3:44
    - Plasma cutter 5:28
    - Metal nibler 6:01
    - Anvil 6:15

    • @FullMetalFox2
      @FullMetalFox2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1:18 can be done with a Hacksaw, you wouldnt even need to use material as large as they did.
      1:25 isnt a TIG, its a MIG. That aside, you can do that with an MMA Arc Welder too, its just a bit more cleanup.
      2:20 instead you could V-notch it at the point you want to bend it and weld the gap, not a smooth round bend, but a sharp bend, still gets the job done.
      2:55 Sure a Drillpress is nice and all, but i cant count how many holes ive drilled with a normal battery drill because it was easier/quicker than running back to said drill press with some heavy piece of steel. Center punch or cross notch it, hold the drill steady and apply not to much pressure.
      3:44 Slam it in your drills chuck, and go to town on some file or sandpaper, easy way to get a taper, or just buy two pt-31 plasma electrodes from a hardware store, their like 25 cents a piece and you would even end up with an easy to replace consumable.
      5:28 The Plasma Cutter wasnt necessary if they would have planed for that foot pedal, so you could corner drill and hacksaw that easily.
      6:01 Tinsnips, sheet metal scissors, heck even one of those scissors for chickens and turkey would be able to cut that stuff.
      6:15 a brick would be enough.
      Just some examples, you dont always need the tools you see people using, quiet often their just the more easy or convenient way of doing it. Ive bought a lot of tools in the past thinking i would need specific tools to get something done.

      Mate you no nothing about tools do you. He designed and built it himself didn’t he? That’s DYI. Just because he used quality tools does not make it any less DYI it just makes it easier, faster and a better quality result. He could build the same thing with a hacksaw and stick welder but it would not look as good and would take a lot longer. What I can’t believe is that you took the time to go back through the video and write down at what time all those tools were used just so you could write a complaint. Why don’t you use all that time to go and make something and put it on TH-cam and show us all how good YOU are. Sorry mate but people like you are such fucking losers in my book. 🇦🇺

    I just like learning how other people address the same kinds of challenges in their projects, as I do in mine. No matter what you're building, you've got parts that move and parts that don't. They all have to fasten, slide, hinge, rotate etc, with respect to each other. One guy's spot welder could be another guy's banana straightener. They could share the same hinge or seal or cooling scheme design. Thanks - Lumpy

    Reading through some of the comments on the "DIY" bit. Ok so maybe not so DIY, you need a few (very nice tools btw) to build this. But SERIOUSLY your fabrication skills are just fantastic - not to mention those awesome welds! Keen to see more of your projects. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the well done video. You show the details of how to rig the transformer for the electrical part of the circuit, but near the end you show electrical controls that suggest the welding current time duration can be varied. What electronic components are used for this feature? Also, you show that a light is used to determine when the apparatus is fully charged, suggesting that capacitor storage is used. We didn't see the details on this part of the electronic circuit. Finally, do you think one of those new, efficient super-capacitors could be used in such a spot welding apparatus? Thanks.

    ..awesome video...noticed that both secondary leads run through pieces of steel tube and throughout holes in steel plates. Also the electrodes are mounted within fully enclosed steel rings. That will give 6 one-turn selfinductions. If all fully enclosed one turn selfinductions are cut lenghtwise
    (In the direction of the current) a hacksawblade thick cut will do, the selfinduction effect then has gone, giving at least about 120 amps more current in the secondary circuit. The weld-on-time then can be lowered which will result in a better weld. (Same heat generated in less time= better weld).
