I am a recovering alcoholic (17 years sober) and a recovering prescription drug addict (seven years clean). As they say in AA, "One drink is too many, and a thousand are not enough."
Her life and emotions are so complex, she had unbelievable headwinds in a lot of ways. She has left behind certain indelible performances, so well done.
I saw her in 1985. She was great. Even though her ticket prices were three times everyone else was charging. I spent the money and went. I was never sorry I spent the money. She's a legend. I still love her.
OH geez, I ADORE Liza for saying that the nerves/fear SHE FELT the first time performing sober were NO different than the feelings of her fellow patients in rehab, going home and facing their neighbors, their churches, their families etc. That's a great insight and one that shows humility. A good dose of humility can be the best thing for a person, especially an addict. You have nowhere to go but up too! I went to rehab in the 80s and it was still so stigmatized, I haven't drank in 30 yrs but I still feel like a freak because of my illness and don't tell anyone. Sometimes I'd like to tell people, "hey I haven't drink for 30 years, it's been kinda challenging but I did it" I'd kinda like to hear someone say, "congrats!" but deep down, I know the universe or God carried me most of those years.
Liza is a very loving sweet person with alot of given talent ! Her Mom would be very proud of her and I think is if she can look down at her daughter from heaven ! I had a drinking problem did dry out but it took me till 1983 I tried stopping in 1981 but I couldnt till I decided to take the bull by the horns and give it up ! Proud Liza could can talk about it now ! I used to go to AA from 1981 till 1995 but have kept sober all thouse years !
How I wish Liza's mom Judy would've gotten the help for her addiction that she so desperately needed. Judy would've lived longer than 47 years if she gotten the help she needed
I love Miss Minnelli but am always a little disappointed in her interviews about her addictions. She was definitely in denial here and in every interview up until today She always admits to the alcohol and to the prescribed Valium but never once has admitted to cocaine abuse which is no secret to anyone, so yes, she is still in denial. She could really have helped many going through cocaine addiction but she does care what people think about her and since it is an illegal drug she remains silent.
Whats wrong with diet pills and valium and horse tranquilizers to sleep and a little coke to wake up and get the day started with..... All perfectly fine in moderation!!!

This episode is over 30 years old, and she is 75 now, so you have to give her credit for surviving!
She is such a thoughtful, kind and giving person and performer. And a survivor. Love and respect her so much. ❤️

I was lucky enough to see Liza in this Palladium concert, she was as usual fabulous.

I thought this was going to be a current interview. Ed Bradley, the interviewer, died in 2006. Disappointed.
She relapsed a long, long time ago, and never got well again.
To me Judy, Liza and Betty Hutton were the best entertainer of the 20th Century. The rest are a poor imitation.
