1. Cost and labour 2. Easy to locate the wreckage 3. High contrast and birds can't be attracted 4. White keeps cool during high temperatures 5. Easy to locate oil leaks or dents
4. No. White doesn't magically keep cool in high temperatures. White reflects light more than any specific colour (since it is made up of all the visible colours) so it heats up less when exposed to sunlight. Look at high speed aircraft like the SR71 or the Bell X15... BLACK to RADIATE heat.
So basically it (1) Help in locating any oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid leaks (2) Helps in identifying cracks during hard landing (3) Due to hight reflectivity and low absorbivity of white surface it will reflect most of heat waves and so the metal underneath the paint will not be heated so the thermal loads on already loaded structure can be controlled which will prevent metal creep.

Hey Joe, great video, but here's one correction about composite parts being painted: The problem is not thermal expansion stress due to the parts heating up. In fact, most fibre composites are designed to have a CTE of nearly zero, so stress is not a problem. The reason for painting them is that the polymer matrix degrades when subjected to UV radiation (which there is a lot of at higher altitude because of the thinner atmosphere and the lack of clouds). The parts also need to be protected from environmental influences (moisture especially), due to the polymers' tendency to pick up water and swell - which in term leads to stress and lower performance. Fly safely

Since the majority of vehicles in that era did NOT have air conditioning, you almost could not GIVE AWAY a black car in that climate! AA only abandoned the unpainted scheme because of the 787 which is largely composite so had to be painted. That with the merger with US air they decided to take the whole fleet to the new livery.

Hi, how about you do a video to explain the centre of gravity and how it is determined. How important it is for safe and efficient flight of aircraft . The paint booths they use to paint these planes are incredible. The air handling systems they use to feed the air in is very complex and requires a bunch of stages. I worked at a company that designed the air handlers for aircraft and many other things. When I started there they were building units for feeding paint booths for the F-16. The twin otter relies entirely on cables and pullies to move the control surfaces, so when a cable wears down and breaks there is nothing one can do. The best way to stop this from happening is preventative maintenance. Modern aircraft use hydraulic systems, and some aircraft like the 737 still use cables as a backup system. Also keep in mind, this only matters while the plane is on the tarmac trying to cool down the cabin. Once up in the air the skin of the plane matches the temperature of the air outside regardless of color. You also expect the nose and leading edges to be relatively warm as Mach increases.
When learning to fly airplanes we learn a maneuver called a slip, which involves flying the airplane sideways through the air. Sorta like drifting. In the air you slip to lose altitude quickly without building up too much speed. On final approach you slip to compensate for crosswinds.
Great video about something I never thought about. Especially the added weight of the paint. From now on when I see a brightly colored airplane I'll have a whole new appreciation for what's involved in it's painting.
Nice video, Captain is it true that a british airways airplane takes off in every 90 seconds somewhere in the world? As you know anniversary of British Airways is coming are you excited about it ? How Important is it for you to be a part of BA ?
@Captain Joe Re: near the equator, white colored cars reflect the heat of the sun better rather than absorbing it. So white would make more sense in areas where it's hot, same goes for the light colored cloth interior.
I find the "white planes have less bird strikes because they contrast better" very dubious, most bird strikes happen at lower levels usually below the cloud base, therefore the bird would be looking at the plane against a background of cloud which is white or grey!!!!
The infrared thermometer comparison of car temperatures is wrong, because the measured value itself depends on the reflectiveness of the surface, not only its temperature. To do a fair comparison, one would stick a black tape on both cars and measure on that tape (minding the diameter of measured surface, depends on instrument distance from surface, to fit onto the tape). This is a common trick for example when measuring temperature of stainless steel kettles with infrared thermometers.
You are right. It is mainly caused by the "white" ingredient ised in the paint. For example the Zinc one is having more reflectivenes and less absorption then the Titanium. This way the titanium white is worse to achieve coder surface. Actually you may be surprised that titanium white may be as good for solar as black paint :)
Or, open the bonnets and measure the temperature of the underside each. That said, the effect on temperature of black vs white surfaces is very strong.
My dad actually taught me this stuff but I like that you’re teaching others! (My dad supplies paint for a few airplane businesses and also sells car paint. Or you can just say automotive paint business ig)
I did hear that the Concorde was painted mostly all-white because the plane would otherwise overheat during supersonic speeds. They allowed a blue Concorde for a short while but its time spent flying supersonic was highly restricted until it was repainted back in white.
3:39 Cool video but if you're going to talk about temperature differences use Celsius, not Fahrenheit! By all means use both units to keep US viewers happy but for the rest of the world the difference was 72-39 or 33 degrees. 4:04 What's even weirder is that you switch to using Celsius ONLY immediately afterwards...
Doh! Air NZ have some All Black livery aircraft I think they did for the rugby World Cup....which of course we won🤪🇳🇿. If they re paint every 7-8 years, they will be All Blacks forever! Thermal stress sound like a costly down side. I like those green planes. Hey. Great topic. 200k sounds cheap though. Cost to paint an exec jet can be 100k and they are tiny by comparison. So funny the sweep stakes on your air line now. I thought Qatar cargo as they are hiring for new 747-8F.....but I see lots of Cargolux comments! Ahaha! Woohoo. USAF F16s in NZ for warbirds air show this weekend! All the best with the rating
Andrew Wade the cost of painting an airplane has more likely to do with labor and facility costs than paint costs which is why it doesn't vary much from plane to plane regardless of size.
Black paint absorbs heat and white paint reflects a lot of heat, also why some buildings on the Greek islands are painted white. Your videos are fascinating.
5:06 At the other hand, in countries far away from the equator (like Finland), people prefer other colors than white: white cars are harder to find in Winter :)
As an aerospace engineer I can clarify , using white paint instead of black. Is to prevent a phenomenon known as black body radiation . Reflectiveness doesn't play a major role. It's just the color gradient falls into the right spectrum in which the electrons from uv light gets acted up hence being excited to a higher or lower level.
A pilot once told me that if the lights are switched off mid flight they stay off. Is that because the aeroplane has to be earthed and be on the ground before the lights can go back on? There was no incident with the lights on that particular flight!
No, it’s fuel exploding. Of course it’s flammable but in a crash it is worse since the forces of the crash cause the fuel to instantly spread into a cloud of small droplets that burn really well, and of course the crash will also cause friction and sparks which will easily ignite the fuel cloud.
@@Sashazur so same principle as a Fuel/Air bomb. Disperse a cloud of gas then create a spark to ignite the cloud causing a tremendous Shockwave as the temp rapidly expands?
I always assumed it has to do with radar and white reflects signals a lot better than darker paint jobs. Thus it is easier to track where planes are especially when it is becoming crowded in the sky more and more and control tower can navigate them safer so there is no collisions.

Dry nitrogen is moisture free and will not freeze and the nitrogen in inert
Not affected by pressure and temp changes
Very effective for an aircraft
most tire places will nitrogen fill your tires for a fee

Also keep in mind, this only matters while the plane is on the tarmac trying to cool down the cabin. Once up in the air the skin of the plane matches the temperature of the air outside regardless of color. You also expect the nose and leading edges to be relatively warm as Mach increases.
Hi Joe, have you ever drifted in a plane before?
When learning to fly airplanes we learn a maneuver called a slip, which involves flying the airplane sideways through the air. Sorta like drifting. In the air you slip to lose altitude quickly without building up too much speed. On final approach you slip to compensate for crosswinds.
Well I´ve flown many crosswind approaches, so that's similar to drifting :)
Deja vu
Wow, pretty interesting! I was aware of the thermal and visibility reasons, the others I guess I didn't consider! thanks, very informing!
Great video about something I never thought about. Especially the added weight of the paint. From now on when I see a brightly colored airplane I'll have a whole new appreciation for what's involved in it's painting.
Well on GTA 5 all my Aircraft's BLACK !
Tyson Rice you do care

Nice video, Captain is it true that a british airways airplane takes off in every 90 seconds somewhere in the world? As you know anniversary of British Airways is coming are you excited about it ? How Important is it for you to be a part of BA ?
Gurpreet Singh yeah man
What makes British Airways so exciting nowadays? The non-competitive products?
Gurpreet Singh I guess it's true
Lausi Meyer I guess why you think like that Lausi Meyer
BA is one among the leading airlines in the world
@Captain Joe Re: near the equator, white colored cars reflect the heat of the sun better rather than absorbing it.
Well he did say he doubts that rumor
Planes just need air horns instead...
Thank you captain following you from algeria north africa
With love 😍😘
captain riad ههههههههه

You just said this process have to be repeated again every 78years. That's amazing if a aircraft life span can exceed 78years
7 to 8 years
@@NOONE-hp8bw thx. My bad
Haha this is how rumours start
I did hear that the Concorde was painted mostly all-white because the plane would otherwise overheat during supersonic speeds. They allowed a blue Concorde for a short while but its time spent flying supersonic was highly restricted until it was repainted back in white.
3:39 Cool video but if you're going to talk about temperature differences use Celsius, not Fahrenheit!
By all means use both units to keep US viewers happy but for the rest of the world the difference was 72-39 or 33 degrees.
4:04 What's even weirder is that you switch to using Celsius ONLY immediately afterwards...
He used both .. Watch clearly ... And haven't u studied the conversion ???
Damn this guy is a pilot and he put the $ sign behind the number
EGGNOG so what?
The answer for the question that i never think ever
5:06 At the other hand, in countries far away from the equator (like Finland), people prefer other colors than white: white cars are harder to find in Winter :)
Because they work.
good one
Wow, excellent explanation!
Conclusion : 1.there CHEAP
2. The paint CAN keep the plane COOL
3. Good For Maintenance
SF12, where cheap?
Why do they lie about using fuel?
SupaSince Day1 what do they use
Made u Look compressed air.
SupaSince Day1 ok, I didn’t know that
A pilot once told me that if the lights are switched off mid flight they stay off. Is that because the aeroplane has to be earthed and be on the ground before the lights can go back on? There was no incident with the lights on that particular flight!
Is it true that in a crash, the main reason for the large fireball is because of the chemicals in the paint?
I would tend to think it's large quantities of stored fuel being released, I haven't heard about the paint causing it before.
In my experience, kerosene burns quite well. It is sold as fuel, after all.
Idk maybe they excessive amounts of a jet fuel help too but just a theory
And Air New Zealand is like "What about no" and just paints it Black (Special Livery for the All Black's)
Bloody stupid idea, I say stuff the All Slacks.
@@barrierodliffe4155 nothing to do with the all blacks, black is our national colour, Air NZ is our national airline.
@@regregan5755
Air NZ colours white and blue except for the black for the all slacks.
@@barrierodliffe4155 those are the old Air NZ colours, the new Air NZ scheme, is black...
@@barrierodliffe4155 actually it's not even that new now, where have you been??
Captain Joe, always with the answers I didn't know I needed!
Shiny Aluminium planes FTW
But saudia airlines not white colored
True, it's a very light shade of cream which almost does the same job as white
Hides the dirt better!!!
I always assumed it has to do with radar and white reflects signals a lot better than darker paint jobs. Thus it is easier to track where planes are especially when it is becoming crowded in the sky more and more and control tower can navigate them safer so there is no collisions.
Good luck selling that Pokemon airplane LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Umm... it's Lolita Express!
