    I reckon that Messrs Joplin and Hayden would have thoroughly enjoyed that. The sheer joy in the final driving strain is pure joy and the interpretation by the RRRR is first class!

    This is reminiscent of the Gunther Schuller recordings, but with much more fun in the clean performance.

    The D section is pure gold, anyone know whether it was Joplin or Hayden who wrote it?

    Very nice but it's hardly slow is it?

    • @blackmage1276
      @blackmage1276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at other variations and they are the same speed or faster, the tempo is actually like 80 - 90 bpm, but it's in 2 - 2 time and sixteenth notes

      @@blackmage1276 Thanks for that explanation, but if that's a slow dance, I wouldn't fancy attempting a fast one! On the other hand, I am eighty next year......

      @@john-whitehead it's slow for that time frame I guess

    This era of American music will always be the best. But sadly most people aren’t sophisticated enough to appreciate it and instead listen to filth like Beyoncé, etc. and this is coming from a 22 year old (no I’m not a snob)

      The tuba player is a "rock"? But of course because that is the role of the bass instrument and whoever is playing that bass instrument. I am speaking from experience because I played tuba in both junior high school and high school band for six years. When I was in my thirties, I switched to playing an electric bass guitar. And, last but not least, when I could finally afford to buy a three quarter size acoustic string bass, I bought one.

    Sounds a bit frantic, hurried. Maybe a slightly slower tempo would help? I just can't relax while listening to this. Maybe it's the arrangement? To much stuff happening at the same time? Or maybe it's the balance of the instruments? The tuba on every beat and the piano chord on every off beat is exhausting. The tuba and piano are too hot in the mix. They should be under the melody not equal to it. That is why I am fatigued listening to this. Hope this can help on the next one.

      From the comments I’ve read in this comment section (from 1 year ago saying the same thing you were saying about the tempo), this appears to just be what a “slow” tempo was in Scott Joplin's time. Another comment said how a majority of rags of the time were in 90 to 100 BPM. This may be why the song seems frantic to us now. Also, with this being a live performance, the balancing/volume of the instruments was probably not able to be adjusted as well as it would have been had they recorded this in a studio. Ragtime was always supposed to be a dancing type of music, as many of the critics of the time lamented at the “young folk” prancing about, seemed like fun though haha!
      Maybe this recording may be better for listening: th-cam.com/video/F7_sj194s4U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZCbLTsng-LizUYdg

    "Let's listen to the slow drag, played by..." - and then they play it quickly.

      Thanks for taking a listen! I can understand if the tempo is too fast for your liking, but some historical sense of tempo might be worth noting. Joplin often notated "slow" in his scores as 100 bpm, faster than this performance is played. The directions "do not play ragtime fast" have sometimes resulted in performances in the opposite extreme, giving us some almost dirge-like renditions of this rather joyous work. Ultimately, tempo is a matter of interpretation, although this would seem pretty close to the composer's intention, given the markings we have to lead us. Thanks again!

      Tempos were generally faster in those days, in classical as well as popular music. Whenwell, that I played original recordings for our ragtime vintage dance group, people used to question whether they were too fast -- well, I would say, that is how they played them, and danced to them.

      I thought it was a Sousaphone. Does it have the same natural key and range as the other two instruments?
