2022 Conference: Session 3 - Youth Voice & Agency in Schools

The 2022 Conference, “Pass the Mic: Amplifying Youth Voice & Agency” (#YouthAct22), started from the premise that, as a society, we all do better when youth have opportunities to actively engage and have a say in the systems around them. Throughout the conference, we heard from young people, youth workers, educators, researchers, and policy makers about both constraints in and efforts to amplify youth voice and agency across a variety of domains, including health and well-being, education, juvenile justice and social systems, and politics, organizing, and civic life.
While in theory education has moved away from a pure banking model, whereby adults transfer knowledge to students, youth voice and agency is still often limited within schools. This panel will focus on what young people need from educators to feel safe and supported and to have models of how to enact their agency inside and outside of schools.
