What a difference a few years can make. Back when this video was made, there were many more calves to send to market. When Erin's sold her cattle, the number of calves born later fell to little in comparison to the year prior.

Thank you Mike, Erin for taking the time to explain the calves are not just a dollar sign, or meat in the freezer. So many people, especially those not exposed to the farm or ranch life do not and probably never will know that. I miss the calves, piglets, chicks, etc on the farm. I always enjoyed having them, working with them, and spending time with them. They were like pets, even family to a limited extent while they were with us. We always had to remember, like children they eventually grow and move on, to a new home. Sadly sometimes that was going to butcher, but we knew while they were in our hands they were treated great. I really appreciate the voice you have Mike, Erin because of you two, you are humanizing farmers and ranchers. For those who are not in agriculture, your videos are an opportunity to see into a world so many don't understand.

Actually , I worked on a farm during the summertime month when I was a teenager and it was my observations of domesticated animals , namely cattle, that provided me with uncanny insights into human behavior. People and cows in many ways behave the same. Nowadays with human obesity on the rise, people really do look and act like cows.
It's funny, the narrator states that food is a major motivator for cows. Is this not the same for humans ? You bet, people and cows think alike. I would even argue that the narrator's corporate life helped him more than he realizes. If you can manage people, you can manage cows. Just by observing this video, I can see that the narrator understands how to handle cows effectively. This was learned in the corporate world.

I agree, as a fellow cattleman, my favorite time of year is seeing the newborn calves come and in the weeks that follow seeing them run, jump and play. To me, that is what it's all about, and taking care of them and seeing them grow, and keeping back some good looking heifers and watching them grow into cows and seeing how their calves compare. It is always hard to sell the calves, even harder to sell some of the older cows that was kept maybe just a year or three too long. Thanks for all your vids Mike. God bless and I hope it's a good check for ya.

Just took my calves to the auction here in Texas. I didn't grow up on a ranch and it is always hard on me. I have a small herd so every calf as my cows are somewhat spoiled as I pay close attention to all of them. Your right, I need a glass of Whiskey once the calves are gone.

Raising cattle is hard. It has long days and low pay. We only have a few cows but when we take a few calves to market the cows wake us up all through the night. Never thought about taking that many calves to market at one time. Not a job for everyone, but for the one"s that do, it is as much a part of their lives as breathing. I think the hardest part is when the calves have to move on. If it were left to me I would keep them all. Thank you Mike for taking us through a modern day round up. Congratulations on the 50,000K

that's one thing I learned about cows, is separating, One thing I did find out is that a lot of the mooing is the mothers looking for her calf, I heard that a mother and calf can pace up to I forget how many miles, mooing and not eating properly and not gain weight. One vet in Canada forget his name, He came up with a nose tag to help keep the cow and calves calm during the time when its time to ween the calves, but some of the calves learn how to flip the nose tag out of the way. was to help stop em from sucking but every idea has a back draw. I do love cows, they do give man so much, like meat, leather, glue, money, milk products etc

I really appreciate your work! You’ve got a humane, yet realistic way to farming. Most people like to romanticize it, ignoring that there is the less fortunate parts of farming like selling calves or sending cows to feedlots etc. (or the alternative... calling the farmers the bad guys ugh.) You make sure to mention the reality of farming, all the while showing the good to real farming and that’s really admirable! I’d prefer a real ranch-raised beef or dairy than some of the alternatives.
