One of the most important principles of writing that I know, which is not mentioned here, is, “Don’t tell, show.” You can hear this principle in action in two very fine songs of the late 1960’s, “Who Knows Where The Time Goes,” by Sandy Denny, and “Changes,” by Phil Ochs. Both songs deal powerfully with the same subject, the bittersweet passing of a relationship with time, without actually telling us about it directly. Both songs are available on TH-cam, and are must-listens for anyone who is serious about learning how to write great lyrics.

The third verse suggestion is excellent. Thank you. I’m alright at writing completely new lyrics to an existing melody but the extra focus brought by actually extending the existing song is a great idea

I like that your writing had an unusual rhyme scheme by making “-round” from “around” slant rhyme with “town” and “spine” which all have this “ah” sound in common
I don’t see this type of rhyming used enough outside of lyrical Hip Hop. As a songwriter for the last 10 years I could take these words and write multisyllable rhymes such as
- Around the floor (instead of around)
- My spinal cord (instead of spine)
- A town resort (instead of town)
Other 4 syllable rhymes that could work would be “like I don’t know”, “my final form”, “why I record”, “nice guys be cold”, “about rewards”, “swiped right before”, “lifestyle reform”, etc

This is so helpful! This is the kind of advice I've been looking for. When I'm suffering writer's block, I find it nice to listen to songs and analyze the lyrics after. I do this with everyone from Taylor Swift to Sufjan Stevens
Also I just want to say if you don't want to be vulnerable (which you don't have to be if it's something private or you don't feel comfortable then don't write it) you can create a character and write something from their perspective and write how their feeling and everything so that people think it's relatable and touching still but it doesn't have to be something personal and it could be a part of a series :)
Alot of artists have done that and also if you want to write something personal it can be ambiguous cause there are plenty of songs that we believe are about one thing but are something entirely just remember to be descriptive and you can make up a story to diverge from the true meaning and make it interesting

actually, i really really agree with the reading and analysis part, like, yesterday, all of a sudden i decided to look up the meaning of washing machine heart by mitski, since i loved listening to it, but never really thought of diving deeper into the song before, and i was honestly mind blown, her song writing is so amazing, and it genuinely taught me so much in such a short time- I didnt even have time to look it up properly, yet i learnt a lot!! and well, its not the first time ive tried to look up the meaning of a song, but this time i was just so astonished

I used this alphabet method. I made a song, it sounds so good!! and it makes sence with it! I used every letter except, X and Z. Its very easy to use!
When I'm bored I usually like to write songs and send them to my friends and I imagine it a popular song so I can get used to the lyrics easier. I also write stories, books and poems a lot so this helps a TON.

I honestly didn't expect to get a new song idea from this but halfway through when you say "Or start every line with a different letter of the alphabet" i got a whole new idea! Once again your videos are saving me from the (metaphorical) ocean of writers block
I find that something that helps me is listening to songs without reading the lyrics. since when I sing it I'll sing a portion of it and then randomly make up the rest of the lyric. gives me a starting point for the rest of it.

not a noob but really good tips! one thing I recommend is instead of just writing, try to transcribe the feeling. like, make the reader completely understand the emotion you're trying to convey :)

I know this is a year old lol but something that helps me sometimes when I'm feeling stuck is looking back on old songs I've written and changing the lyrics to make them better. If you have a song with a good melody but you aren't proud of the lyrics, that doesn't mean throw the whole song away!

Totally agree with setting limitations. It creates boundaries and forces you to think differently. Just like someone having limited resources creating the best invention the world wasn’t ready for. They were forced to squeeze out the creativity and solution bc of the tight space. Sometimes we need pressure to pour out. We need some boundaries to become better versions of ourself and or create unique and authentic pieces.
So yeah got thrown here cuz we have an assignment about making our own lyrics or songs🤣

Maybe you could make sure you have something you can record yourself with handy (if I don't have anything I try to repeat what I thought over and over until I find a way to record it so I don't lose it lol) and then record. Listen back and then work from there

I have been writing songs for a long time. They have obviously gotten better, but I have never EVER thrown away a lyric or melody. If you want to write something, think on paper, then modify everything until it is good enough for you. Even though the final product might look completely different from the feeble lines you began with. Also, bring a notebook everywhere. I got a ton of inspiration being in Europe and I was so glad I brought my notebook places because I kept having random ideas that COULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN. Now I have a song!!!

I know this was 2 years ago and I’m just now watching it. When I was young I would write random songs and eventually thought I wasn’t good enough to keep trying so I threw it away. A couple years later today being 19.. song writing and singing/music in general is still something I enjoy.. people in the past still don’t think I’m a fit for it or will never make it and even if I don’t someday writing songs about my life and mental health is something I really enjoy and want to continue. I’m not a great singer but anyone can learn, and it’s really is hard to write a song not knowing where to start and end, but If I really want it, I need to work for it. Thank you for this video. These are such good tips!! Especially the 3rd one. Giving yourself a few limitations really activates your creativity.
As for discovering new music, there's also a lot you can learn fron the old music legends. i started listening to Fleetwood mac and i was blown away by the songwriting, they have a very distinct style
