I read the majority of the books as they came out so I kinda had to read them in publication order lolll. But I've found that with every reread, it's more enjoyable for me to separate them by series starting with TMI, then TID, and TDA. This is such a great video idea!! 💕 It's definitely a confusing topic that needs a lot of explanation, especially as more books come out 😄

I really do regret not reading TFTSA before reading Lady Midnight but I wanted to wait till the whole book comes out, but I'm glad I read TID before I read the last three books of TMI. I'm also glad I read the Bane Chronicles after City of Heavenly Fire because SO MUCH FEELS.

To sum up, She gives you some recommendations on which order you can read the Shadowhunters Chronicles (so far comprised of The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices series + The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy):
1) You can read all the books in publication order, which is how the author reccomends it. It goes: City of Bones (TMI), City of Ashes (TMI), City of Glass (TMI), Clockwork Angel(TID), City of Fallen Angels (TMI), Clockwork Prince (TID), City of Lost Souls (TMI), Clockwork Princess (TID), The Bane Chronicles, City of Heavenly Fire(TMI), Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, Lady Midnight (TDA), Lord of Shadows (TDA) and Queen of Air and Darkness (TDA).
2)For the people who prefer to binge read entire series, she recommends reading the first three TMI books (City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass), then the entire TDI Trilogy (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess), then the rest of the TMI books (Ciy of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire) because there is a natural break between City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels in TMI, which is great for reading the TID Trilogy. After that you can read The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the shadowhunter academy and then the TDA series.
3) Or you can start with the prequels and binge-read TID and then TMI, then of course the bane chronicles, tales from the shadowhunter academy and lastly, TDA. It can still work as the main character in TID is also discovering the Universe, so you won't feel lost if you start with the prequels and many people (myself included) actually like The Infernal Devices better, so it's a great way to start.
General suggestions on how to read it: DO NOT READ THE DARK ARTIFICES FIRST. It will spoil TMI and TID and you may get a little lost reading it without the context. Read TID before reading TMI's City of Heavenly fire or else you will be spoiled for TID (and trust me, you don't want that). Also, you should read Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy before Lady Midnight.

The synopsis of tales of shadowhunter academy was in the end of the new City of bones paperback so I was spoiled when I looked through the end content. That kinda annoyed me.
I read The Infernal Devices series first and then started with City of Bones. I didn't enjoy the writing as much until I got to City of Fallen Angles. I can defiantly see her writing improvements. I will finish the series eventually, but I don't really feel like rushing through it. Thanks for all of this info! I have always wondered how to dive into this series so it's good to know.. side note- I read the Infernal Devices series first because I thought the covers were so pretty!! Lol!

I read everything in publication order and my mind was blown! There are so many little things that Cassandra connected and it's just best to read them in publication order! No matter the order you read, devastation of your life is afoot! I kind of tear up when I even look at my copy of Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, Clock Work Princess or Heavenly Fire!! Dev A Sta Tion!!!! So worth it though!!

Same here, I started with Lady midnight like two years ago and thought that it was just so confusing and boring, so I just never finished it and ended up thinking that it’s not for me. But now I started from City of bones, which I think is the best way, because my opinions on Shadowhunter world changed a lot and I just ended up loving absolutely everything about the series 💖

*Small storytime in the comments here*: I read all of the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices as they were being published. I got to Clockwork Princess, though, and hit an awful reading slump. This happened because I think someone spoiled me for a certain character's death at the end of the book. I put the book down and forgot about it due to college, life and stuff. I even read the entirety of Heavenly Fire with out knowing that I hadn't finished Clockwork Princess. I reread them after I had finished Lady Midnight and when I got to Clockwork Princess, I realized due to the level of attachment I had to the character, I had just told myself that I had finished the series to save myself the pain. Boy, was I confused by the ending. I have a video about but I just wanted to share that in fact you do not HAVE to read them in order but I sure as hell would have appreciated knowing the full story.
Personally I read the books in order of TMI: City of Bones City of Ashes City of GlassTID: Clockwork Angel Clockwork Prince Clockwork PrincessTMI: City of fallen angels City of lost souls City of heavenly fire I had an excellent reading experience reading both of these series and now am going on to read all of the novellas and companion novels before I jump into TDA x

i read most of the shadowhunters chronicles years ago but listening to you talk about it makes me miss TID so much omg the feels are slowly surfacing again
Also, i made the mistake of reading Lady Midnight before Shadowhunter Academy and the finale of LM was totally confusing and i just really wish i would've read the Tales first. So yeah, as much as it's not crucial, I do agree you should read them before LM. And i can't even imagine what it's like to read LM before TMI and TID. Like, WHAT THE HELL. Just read them all, it's not like you'll regret it.

the TMI1 TID TMI2 order is what i recommend people to read. As that is how i discovered is the best way to read since CoFA mentions things that take place is Clockwork Prince so reading TID before the second half of TMI really lets you find all the easter eggs in TMI2.

I actually started City of Bones but ended up not finishing it. I just couldn't get into it at the time. But that's the consensus I get from a lot of people. It can be difficult to get through City of Bones. But a couple of years later, I picked up Clockwork Angel not realizing it was a part of the same universe as City of Bones. I blew through Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince and decided to give The Mortal Instruments a second chance and was absolutely blown away. I could not believe I had almost tossed that series to the wayside. Now I'm a avid reader of the Shadowhunters Chronicles. I re-read the series every July as a birthday gift to myself. I owe all the enjoyment I got out of the series to Clockwork Angel. Without it, I would never have made it through City of Bones and been exposed to this world that is probably my favorite book universe of all time.
I am going to read it like Cassandra Clare said the mortal instruments then the infernal devices then maybe the dark artifacts series

I wasn't that into booktube when I began reading tmi, and I really liked the series, so I basically ignored everyone's advice and read all of tmi xD . I was so confused at the end of cohf because these characters "jem" and "Tessa" though, and I forgot about them when I read tid so the end of clockwork princess still shocked me xD
Oh my gosh, this is so helpful! My friend recommended I read TID first, so I started those ones. I read the first 2, but suddenly I had this weird feeling that I was reading them out of order. And that maybe I would enjoy it way more if I had read TMI first. So I actually stopped reading them altogether because I just didn't know what to do! haha I finally feel safe enough to pick them back up! Yay!

I read them in such a random way lol. Coming into the books from watching the tv show I was obviously only aware of the tmi characters. So I read TMI, Bane Chronicles (cause Magnus is bae), Lady Midnight and then Tales (cause I didn't wanna read them in ebook) and finally TID. I know this order sounds insane lol.

Last month I read the first two books of the Mortal instruments. Honestly I didn't like them much and it makes me kinda sad because I feel like I'm missing out on this magical world that everyone seems to love...
It only gets really amazing half-way through the third book. Give it a shot! :)
maybe try the infernal devices and see if it's maybe more your style? i think a lot of people get stuck on the first two tmi books, so you're not alone! but if you think it's something you have the potential to like, you may want to give it another go with one of the other books :)

Molly Rowbotham I also got stucked in book 2! For me, part of the problem is that the chapters are really long (they're around 20 pages, guys) I LOVED book 2, and that's kind of the reason why I might give it another chance. Besides, I think it's hard to read the books without thinking about the TV show or spoilers if you have been spoiled (I have).

Molly Rowbotham I quitted the series after book 3 because the ending left me satisfied and I thought it was an ok series, nothing impressive, but then like a year later or so I picked up Clockwork Angel and completly fell in love with it and with the world of shadowhunters and I've been a huge fan ever since. My advice is: dont give up on the series, it gets sooo much better with each book!!

bookishsami not really but there are notes "written" by Clary, Simon and Jace that might reference inside jokes and stuff like that
bookishsami I would have at least read City of Bones before reading the Codex. I think Clary, Jace, and Simon's notes take place somewhere in the timeline of the first three books...but I'm not positive about that. If you've done that, I'd say you're fine. :)

This video is great! I love that she actually gives people options of how to read it and doesn't just stick to the order in which they came out.
I find that option 4 is the most enjoyable way to read it though. I've been reading them since there was only City of Bones and City of Ashes out and we thought City of Glass was the final instalment. So I have tried reading it different ways but in option 4 the story plays out properly, explaining everything without giving away spoilers and you don't have to jump from series to series, you can finish the story line you are on before moving to the next one.

This is super timely! I started reading TMI a few months ago (I finally picked it up after seeing you rave about the whole world so much!) and had just been planning to go through that whole series. I just finished City of Glass a couple weeks ago though, so now that I now the author thinks it's good to go in publication order, I'm just in time to do so. Yay!
This is helpful. I put these series on my TBR but wasn't sure how to go about reading them.
I literally paused on reading city of heavenly fire in mid part of the book bec Tessa has been mentioned so many times already and i am so afraid i will be spoiled since i haven't read TID yet. Then i remember u had a guide video for this..whew! U just saved me emma, thankssss 😘😁

This is so incredibly useful! It came at the perfect time too because I plan to tackle the entire Shadowhunter world this summer. I think I'm going to follow the series marathoning method because I love to marathon series too!

I found the books a few weeks ago and wanted to read them and started with clockwork angel and I’m going to finish it tonight. I’ll read it like

Etc.
Btw I’m totally in love with Jem and I’m so scared he’s going to die
That's the order I read them in and I don't feel like I missed anything or spoiled anything for myself. The ending of clockwork princess is going to blow your mind. Good luck

I read TMI,TID,the bane chronicles, lady midnight, and TFTSA but I wasn't spoiled for anything because I didn't know about it. For instance the end of COHF And clockwork princess didn't connect to me until it was happening In clockwork princess. Also personally for me I feel TID spoils a big part of city of Bones through Glass but I have friends that didn't like TMI so I've recommended them to read TID and go back.
I really want to read the Shadowhunter Chronicles so I will totally read them in publication order! thank you for this!
I originally read all of TMI, then all of TID. I was so confused as to what was going on in CoHF, but I eventually figured it out by the time I read TID 😂 . I wish I had known more about the world at the time, so I could have read everything in publication order. I'm planning on rereading everything that way this summer, so I'm really excited! This is of course extremely helpful to any new readers. Awesome video, Emma 💕
