When they say something so funny you can hear the producers laughing in the background
    James' accents
Nolan trying to get back to the podcast but laughing too hard to do so

Great episode and awesome channel! Thanks so much guys. If you're so interested, there's a great alternative history of the Snake River Jump told from the perspective of Bob Truax, the rocket engineer hired to help build the rocket cycle, as told by Bob Regis in his book "The Great Mambo Chicken and the Transhuman Condition". According to Truax, the original rocket was designed to be pretty much automated (like a legitimate space capsule) and Knievel not much more than a pile of spam in a can. But in testing, the parachute kept deploying too early, so in the end they just ripped all the automation out of it and replaced the parachute with a dead-man's lever. So Knievel wouldn't have to "pull" the chute... he would simply release the lever and the chute would come out. It was a good safety mechanism, in case Knievel passed out or was injured or whatever, then the moment he dropped the lever then the chute would come out. Anyway, Truax's position is that Knievel released the lever early (for whatever reason). Maybe he panicked. Maybe his hand slipped. Its unlikely that we will ever know: but if anything can be certain according to this account, there was no "pull" on the chute... it was designed to come out automatically in all cases except when Knievel was consciously and actively involved with keeping it in.

    • @michaelschorsch3645

As I contemplate this, I guess the parachute was designed to work like a taco bell fart.

To give Mr. Knievel his credit, he would be the first one to freely admit that he'd not always treated everyone as he should have --- in an old documentary of his life entitled, "The Last Of The Gladiators", he said something like, "There's only one jerk in this family, and that's me. Anything majorly negative that's ever happened to us, it's likely been my fault, at least partially. My family and friends have always tried their best to treat me right, but I haven't always reciprocated, and I blame nobody but myself for that."

I probably could have made the jump but I was only 2 years old and couldn’t ride a bike yet.

I watched the Snake Canyon jump live on TV. Evel had a dead man's switch to deploy the parachute. He held it close to his body and if he released it, the parachute would deploy. If he passed out - the parachute would deploy.
My theory is that either his hand slipped or he was so nervous he let go just after he was airborne.

I went to the first Evel Week in Butte Montana in the early 2000s and got loaded with his daughter, who bought everyone's beers in the place, and about 30 people that knew the family. Linda, his ex, was working at the Walmart in town as a greeter to make ends meet. His daughter wouldn't cop to being related to him until I saw her the next day when I met her dad and we talked to her for a while. Strangely, one of my good friends growing up wrote a recommendation for Steve-O to go to clown college so I feel connected to both camps in some weird Gen X way.

Was a Evel Knievel fan as a kid during his heyday. Always wondered if he let go of the dead man's switch on the canyon jump but if you watch the slow mo of the launch, you can see the chute coming out right at the moment take off, while still on the ramp. So I don't think he could have let it go that fast. Plus the son of the Skycycle builder confirmed it was a technical malfunction. Had he went into the river he would have drowned because he was essentially tied into the rocket because he wore a different jumpsuit with the wrong buckles that didn't match up with the safety harness because he had stained the correct jumpsuit with mustard.

I feel like most everything Knievel used for his jumps was never the cremé de la cremé. Yeah, fancy clothes, custom expensive af cars, and houses, not to mention two Leer jets. But, if he never did any practice jumps, until the last jump where he blinded a cameraman, what kind of preparation did he ever really have. He probably bought that shute at a 1970’s Salvation Army. Complete with a tag that read “not fit for use”. 😂 He was most likely solely relying on pure ego and a little PFM (Pure F***ing Magic) every jump he attempted. You should put that in your Knievel screenplay. First scene: buying the shute, described above, and then the jump. Just to accentuate how ridiculous his being alive after all his shenanigans really was. I will definitely watch when it comes out.

  • @robbchastain3036
    @robbchastain3036 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Just make a movie about the whole Snake River deal, complete with the marching band and unruly revelers and races which helped launch Marty Smith into motocross superstardom. And whether Evel pulled the chute or not, he showed up and put on a big show--and as he floated down toward the river, it did seem like he might die and the suspense was the point, no? And I recall some friends up the street in Pacifica going to a movie theater to watch that jump live on a big screen, one of the earliest pay-per-view sporting events? I didn't see Evel that day, but I did get to watch him from the infield at Ontario Motor Speedway in '71--his jump was successful and his wheelies were insane, up and down the front straight, standing and sitting and letting that cape flap in the breeze. One can only imagine how many kids tried that on their Schwinn Sting-Rays, not that they were supposed to try that at home. But that was the thrill of it. And we can thank and blame Evel for that.

Speaking on kids who soar to the same levels as their fathers I immediately thought of Hank Jr. he helped build outlaw country.

The podcast reminded me of when this girl up the street was jumping with her scooter on our ramp up onto the curb of the sidewalk but everytime she turned around we'd push the ramp farther back until she ate it on the curb and went crying home. It was checkered like a racing flag and the while it was kinda fucked cause i dont think we saw her again. Im sorry girl hope all is well. Evil kenievel style, god was with this guy, letz goooooo. Also reminds me of when we were racing our skateboards on our butts down the hill and at the bottom someone hit there head on the mailbox. Good times

1:19:20 In Mr. Knievel's defense, he claimed that the only reason he went that far was that the author of the biography had falsely said bad stuff regarding the daredevil's mother, whom he adored and respected enormously. Kind of like, "You trash me, that's one thing, but you trash my mother, and the claws come out." Can't say that I can totally blame him on that one.

When I was a kid I bought two weedeaters from this yard sale for 5$ they were “broken” they were both brand new looking. I wanted to put the motors on my bikes. I took them home and put 2-cycle in them, they started right up. I went down the same road again to get to my friends house with the weedeaters to start teaming them apart and the guy was outside, he’s like what’s going on with them, and I tell him they both still worked. This dude bum rushed me so hard and demanded I give them back to him, he didn’t even pay me back. I got punkeddd a bunch as a jit too Nolan

As a Butte native you have to live here to understand why he was the way he was. He also was a huge asshole, Montana is a very rough state. When evil was young Butte was still pretty much a wild west town. Also side note the Anaconda smelting stack in Anaconda, MT is the tallest free standing masonry structure in the world and is so wide at top you can drive a car up there. The Anaconda copper company have quite a fascinating past, including murder of workers trying to unionize. Yes up till the 90s I think it was prostitution was still legal in butte. Dumas brothel is another interesting part of butte history. Also montana had no legal speed limit till the late 90s. You could drive 150mph across the state of Montana and not be pulled over once, as of right now we have such a low number highway patrol officers you can still get away with speeding on good stretches of our highway.
