Try putting you wheel near a wall so you can jam your left elbow into the wall while the clay spins in your left hand. That way the clay cannot push your hand back and forth. Try with 500gms of clay and work up. I will do a new video on centering this weekend.
Greetings Vaughn. For me, the most challenging issues to manage with plates are getting them off the bats. I know some potters successfully leave them on bats until they release. I have not been able to get that to work without sticking and cracking, despite slow drying with plastic covering.
Try waiting a few hours until the rim stiffens up, then put your wire through. The foot will still be very wet so you’ll have no trouble getting the wire through, but the rim will not distort. This works for any shape that’s wider than it is tall
I’ve wanted to learn how to make pottery for decades and have finally had my first opportunity try my hand at it. I’ve had a grand total of two times to use the wheel at a local community center for “ Well seasoned Adults “ 😂 I wish that I had a wheel of my own because I’m hooked already. I have made several nice pieces hand building but look forward to gaining skill on the wheel. You make it look easy…

Easy as pie, just dry them slowly and lower the rim down about an a hour after you first throw them.

Have you tried using the Hydro Bats? I was watching a demo video and the clay naturally releases from the bat with no cutting off necessary.

Noticed all your batts are not the same thickness, doesn't that affect the height of the bowls?
I measure from the bat to the rim edge.
