I can’t stop listening to the whole album. It’s that good 🔥 But, I wasn’t that much of a fan of the sketchbook (besides Paul’s Dream, House Atreides and Shortening of the Way, I wasn’t really impressed) and the Art and Soul of Dune was also meh to me. But the movie album, holy shit that stuff is dope.
The score is quite decent and has huge attention to detail, really brings the film to life. Having said that though Brain Eno’s Prophecy Theme from 1984 is still phenomenal to this day
Zimmer is a really good composer for accompanying the action. But personally i can't recall any of his music themes. I can remember Laurence of Arabia, Star Wars, Good the Bad and the Ugly, Lord of the Rings even Ghostbusters. But to me none of his themes is memorable. Maybe it's just me.
The level of sound design Hans managed to achieve in this is unlike anything I've heard before. And the fact that he spent a week in Utah listening & trying to perfectly capture the sonic landscape of the desert just shows the level of dedication to his work. It paid off!
The day after I saw the film, I bought the soundtrack (I always planned to, I just wanted to wait until I finally saw the film), and I listened to my iPod with my beefy noise-canceling headphones. Absolutely amazing, ethereal, and visceral. Definitely a great addition to my Hans Zimmer and movie soundtrack collection. Love the experimentation with different vocal sounds - whispers, chanting, throat singing, just to name a few!
Hans Zimmer is a genius. I've been a fan of him since I can remember and every score is an incredible journey. His music for this movie is perfection, it really transports you on Arrakis and the world Frank Herbert has developed, becoming part of the narration. When artists like him and Villeneuve meets, we sure are about to see something extraordinary. Great analysis, thank you ^_^
The score of Dune was absolutely epic. I especially enjoyed the vocal theme that was used when Paul was experiencing his prescient sight or his powers were growing. It made those scenes so much more impactful.
I also think Hanz Zimmer's score is amazing. Each track has a soul that ties in with each part of the movie. Really, the music is part of the cinematic language to portray this story. There's an incredible video by Thomas Flight that goes into detail about the music. Love the videos keep it up!
i have to disagree that this score isn't one you listen to on repeat. it's the most transportive of his scores, i think. listening to it makes me feel like i'm in that world and experiencing the emotions of the story. i find the score can stand on its own without the film. thanks for the video!
the score of HZ for Dune is epic! and I love it. the minor problem with how is it used I have. contrast or better put the lack of it. the epic scene, epic cinematography, epic music. the dramatic scene, dramatic music. for the most part it is one on one. I could do with some silence or some counterpunkt, or a very simple melody as a theme (perhaps played by Gurney) in some scenes, the way it is used in LOTR. you see, they are invested so much that they want to put in as much as they can, and sometimes too much is not enough.
I get chills from every note in this score. I cannot believe the emotion that is embedded within each song, and it is so experimentalist-like. I think this work will go down as one of the most influential of the decade, if not the century.
I'd love to partecipate giving my contribute to this video giving my own analysis, but unfortunately I don't know anything about music XD so I have to stop at the "I freaking loved it"
There are some great interviews on Dunes use of Dolby Atmos and Joe Walkers editing process that are really very revealing about what they were trying to do… and in my mind, they successfully achieved.
You should make one on the special effects too. They used sand screens instead of green screens.Converted digital to flim and back to give that grany look
I agree that Hans' sonic contribution greatly added to the aura and anthropological significance of the maticulously rendered worlds. However, its flaw is that it never gives any moment of emotional release in turnabout resilience, exuberance or catharsis. Which ultimately makes the characters feel like they never accomplished getting anywhere - as their journies are overbeared by the music rather than reflected within it. So to me it's a bit of a mixed bag that often gets lost in its own sauce - which is usually something Zimmer's keenly astute story sensibilities are very cognizant to keep balanced.
@@TheRockinBK That is possible. But then I think Villenueve applied this approach so dogmatically that it became a bit of a detriment to satisfying its established dramatic stakes.
True. The music would be good for a BBC nature documentary, but this is a story about humans and what they do and feel. The music should have augmented that. The story and music left me pretty cold..
Zimmer and anime? Can you elaborate? Never heard of that, but very intrigued. In the meantime, maybe just because I'm a superfan, and I see everything in relationship to my fav: Bleach, I've discover several similarities in the score. But Zimmer ofc goes way beyond. As compared to Bleach's feudal Japan inspired Soul Society and Spanish/Latin American themed Hueco Mundo the world of Dune is way more alien. So crafting an authentic soundscape is a far greater achievement. Also a several hundred episode long shounen has a ton of time to establish character/faction and atmosphere themes. Doing the same amount of variety and depth over the course of a single movie is nigh-impossible. Especially as Zimmer went about it instead of full tracks, the score is made up of small atmospheric soundbites that can even interact with each other for more nuanced depictions. It the last days 8 started to refer to the strong female vocals which first come in when Paul gets a grip on the Gom Jabbar situation as the "Kwisatz Haderach Number One" theme, as it gives me the chills similar as just recalling the main vocal once from Number One for Ichigo.
I as a teenager back in 1970 became entranced by the OST to 2001 & especially the Ligeti pieces ..my brain loves the weird....now if you watch on utube the playing of "Atmospheres" they use brushes on the piano which just astounded me , as Ligeti forces instruments to the limit. I think in this way the "Dune " OST is really listenable & emotional.....Another OST I love is "The girl with all the gifts".....got a sound bar & sub woofer in my hall & play LOUD through the whole bungalow !.....
(11:57) He {Hans Zimmer] has already composed an hour-and-a-half of music for the second film [DUNE !!] in the director's [Denis Villeneuve] proposed trilogy.
Will all due respect to Hans Zimmer, John Williams once said he made a traditional score for "Star Wars" because he wanted audiences to have something familiar that they could relate to in the alien universe of "Star Wars". I entirely understand why Hans Zimmer went for the score he did for "Dune' and it is a true extravaganza for the ears.
Thanks, Cortex Videos.., for looking at the music of Zimmer and his "team" for the film " Dune." ...The score is often overlooked and thus underrated.., maybe because it is intentionally invisible with the movie as a whole.., until you look back around... and then... artfully, carefully... listen... ( Hmm. Where does the sound effects end and the score begin? )
The only downer about Zimmer's score is that the bag pipe score is only a matter of seconds long. I would have loved to have heard more of it. So haunting, so grand and enfeebled at the same time.
The theater I went to played the whole thing at a decibel level that hurt my ears, my wife had to take her hearing aids out so it would be more tolerable. I swear everybody under thirty must be half deaf. I realize this is the fault of the theatre, and not the film itself, I would have enjoyed it more with a few less decibels. This was Santikos Theatre in New Braunfels, Tx
I like his previous work not keen on his dune soundtrack ,,seems to be alot people trying to tell others that it's a masterpiece ,like the hyped movie ,saying it should get an Oscar,, don't see it myself
I loved the movie but the bombardment of noise some seem to think is music didn't do much for me other than as background noise. There are no themes I walked out of the theater or away from any of my multiple viewings having any clear recollection of.
Guthrie Govan is a phenomenal guitarist! I had a feeling that Zimmer would recruit him for the Dune Soundtrack after Guthrie touring with him. Check out some of his work with Steven Wilson and his band The Aristocrats. For a shredder, each note is fluid and quite tasteful at the same time! Also his solo record Erotic Cakes is very good... 😎👌
With that we can say the consensus is there for this to be his most unconventional. But that fits perfectly for such a deep and weird world. Pushing the envelope further than what the mainstream can appreciate is a big win in my books.
Because in reality with the passing of the years it is rejuvenating and not aging. Bad humor aside, I totally agree, it's impressive how he's becoming more and more experimental and interesting in her work.
I do not like the score of Dune. Dark Knight, Gladiator, Pearl Habor, Days of thunder were much more matching scores. Not all new is better than the older Scores. It‘s different, but not better. The only outstanding title was the bagpipe title. That was good. The rest I don‘t remember.
I'm not impressed, this is one of Hans Zimmer's worst ost ever and ridiculous compared to the Toto's Dune ost perfection or even to Brian Eno. People saying HZ ost is epic have really no notions in music or have seen only one movie in their life.
Incredible? I'm not sure. Incredibly boilerplate, perhaps. Music that utilizes non-western notation and industrial or other non-orchestral sound and noise is hardly revolutionary (even for westerners), neither is attempting to capture the sonic properties of a specific place. The predictable insertion of the riff sung by Lisa Gerrard (who I actually think is a great musician) at every moment we were supposed to experience as "significant" felt pandering and was, in short order, quite irritating.
Sorry but I am flat out sick of Zimmer and his style of scoring a film. BWAAA BWAAA BWAAA DRUM DRUM DRUM SHRIEK!!!!!! That is background noise but noise does not a score make. It may be trendy of late to bombard your audience with monolithic sound and call it a score but NOTHING he has done for some time comes out in my head as memorable as anything but noise. I remember he included plenty of noise in Gladiator but also had themes, melodies, ACTUAL MUSIC. Since then it has simply gotten worse and worse.
After loving the Hans Zimmer's score in Dune I had to do a video discussing it. What did you think of Zimmer's Music for Dune?
This is one of those times in life I wish I studied some form of music to fully appreciate the depth of this brilliance.
I can’t stop listening to the whole album. I wanted to watch your video because I thought the music was awful tbh. A lot of super annoying sounds.

Lots and lots of films use music as part of the cinematic language (as you put it)it's nothing new but if your 17 I suppose it is

I agree with your sentiment… the use of silence in intimate scenes between characters would have made the film less rushed as I experienced the film.
I get chills from every note in this score. I cannot believe the emotion that is embedded within each song, and it is so experimentalist-like. I think this work will go down as one of the most influential of the decade, if not the century.
Spectacular soundtrack. But, as great as what I heard in the cinema was, I preferred the Sketchbook version, much more particular.
Great video! Dune’s score is the best blockbuster score in years imo. It sounds so fresh & rich. The way it all comes together is pure genius.
I'd love to partecipate giving my contribute to this video giving my own analysis, but unfortunately I don't know anything about music XD so I have to stop at the "I freaking loved it"
This soundtrack is the only thing I've been listening to since watching the movie
It takes a lot to move me, but this score along with this wonderful film certainly did that! Great video.

Honestly, I think Zimmer's best work is some of the stuff he's done for various anime.

I liked the music of Dune. It reminded me of the music of Ennio Morricone in Sergio Leone’s movies.

Particularly looking forward to the music and soundscape of the "water of life" scene in the next film !!! (and the Emperor/House Corrino theme too)
Omg yes. Give that to me now
Any scifi music done by Hans, I collect... nuff said

hans zimmer is a genius.
It's a shame that you couldn't use any sound clips from the film to punctuate your essay. I really enjoy your writing style.
Hanz Zimmer's noise has ruined film scores. The original Dune score especially "Paul meets Chani" (youtube it) is vastly superior to Zimmer's efforts.
