    As an aussie I know the pain of explaining to the rest of the world you play a special type of football that only your country plays. I used to enjoy watching the aussie afl players play a spot of gaelic football in the off season, it was always professional athletes vs Irish postmen and butchers but they were tough as they come.

      Aussie rules used to be shown on TV in the UK. I loved that sport. Reminded me of rugby union pre-professional days for some reason. It's a shame I can't watch it anymore :(

    I personally know this man, having fallen out of his pub in broad daylight after a night out many times. This is actually Eddie in real life, he’s as mad as a bag of cats! His brother Pat was the headmaster in my secondary school when I was there, an altogether quieter man. He’s even in this video! Growing up as I did in nearby Tipperary Town Eddie is nothing short of a legend, a man known the world over, happy out in his little corner of Ireland.

    I feel that this commentary tells me all I need to know to about the sport: yell when things are good, yell when things are bad, mutter to yourself when things are slow or you’re confused, and things are both better and worse when your friends provide booze. Writing it down like that makes me think I’d like sports a whole lot more if this guy was around holding court. Also: Rest In Peace vocal cords you went above and beyond.

    If commentators were all like him I would watch every sport all the time, it's fucking brilliant! Full on drunk and hungover, burping, cursing, retching, confused AF, calling out the ref, making medical guesses "he's okay, just got stunned" "he'll be up in a minute" "he broke his finger", while seeing people on the ground 20 meters away 😂 This man is a legend and a treasure!

    We've got a few ex-gaelic players running around in the AFL, so we Aussies know how hard these blokes go. I think Setanta Ò Hailpín is still the only AFL player to have beaten up his own teammate at training.

      @@AwakenedAvocado there are some similarities and for a while they experimented with a hybridised game between the two nations that involved a round ball and a mixture of scoring systems from both games. Unsurprisingly, the Irish tended to win more than the Australians.
      The big differences are the shape of the ball, scoring, tackling (in Australian Rules, not Gaelic) and bouncing the ball rather than playing it off your foot in Australian Rules.

    I knew there was a hybrid version of Gaelic and Aussie rules football that Irish and Aussie teams played sometimes, but I didn't know how similar they were.
    When Eddie said "you can't be pushing a man in the back like that" all I heard was several choruses of "in the back!!" heard regularly from fans in stadiums across Australia.

      And that was club level in the early 90’s with all the pushes, punches, kicks, elbows and sneaky slaps to balls that, by gentleman’s agreement, were thought of as part of the game back then as long as the ref didn’t see

      Its actually a very good sport to watch. Quite the spectacle and its not all slowed down like many western sports. Its awesome and unique to Ireland. Check it out it doesn't take long till you get into it.

      GAA highlights will probably post tomorrows all ireland Final (superbowl equivalent) in full about 2 hours after the game finishes at 5 pm irish time.The hurling final was last week and you can find that on GAA highlights too

      Fun fact usually more people attend th gaelic football and hurling superbowl type events than the actual superbowl.They are held every year in croke park 82300 ,whereas the superbowl host stadiums have lower capacities usually.The same is often the case for the world cup finals.Television figures of course are no where near ,ireland has a population of just seven million.

      By appreciating the good plays and criticizing the bad ones. Arguing with the commentators from your couch is fun too. With commentary like this though I don't care who's winning!

      Its literally the worst, most boring shit you will ever see. But credit where credit is due, those tools manage to find something to say for 3-6 hours straight, often much of it off the cuff. Takes skill even if its a stupid skill

    Qxir, I'm American with a lot of Irish decent, and have never heard of Gaelic Football until this video. Thank you so much for educating me more of my Irish heritage in 20 minutes than all of my ancestors did in my 40 years of being alive. Also, the video about the whisky fire and all the people that died was because of alcohol poisoning and not from fire or smoke.... one of my favorite videos. I think I'll watch it again right now.

    When I was a kid growing up in Chicago in the 60s, I had an older Irish cousin, Jim Kelly, who fancied himself a Jack of all trades. Many were the times I'd be working with my brothers and Jim would be our foreman/coach/announcer. He never stopped talking the whole job. He'd be cursing us and blessing us, reciting snatches of Irish poetry, singing and lamenting good men lost...he sounded just like this guy. We must have scared the bejesus out of Jim's poor customers.

    Ireland is such a unique country. They are them, and they are unique. I appreciate them. My last name is McReynolds so I'm a bloody Mc but raised in Oregon. So I appreciate all those who live in Ireland and live true to form. It's pretty special how unique y'all live by and your personalities and characteristics of the culture and society it's a special special thing that the world would be a must duller place without the heart of the Irish people

      Irish/Japanese comparisons fascinate me. Both islands but so different. It’s amazing how earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions can effect a people. Disgrace yourself in Japan and suicide is the remedy to restore your honor, disgrace yourself in Ireland? Just lie low for a couple of weeks and then brave it out and act like it never happened, counting everybody to have either already forgotten all about it or generally not giving a shit even if they do remember.

    Gaelic football: What you get if the English football rulebook and the rugby rulebook had an unholy love child together. The drunken commentary by 'effin Eddie was just the chef's kiss on the whole deal. 🤣
    He deserved a permanent (and paid!) commentary job for that gig. I can think of half a dozen sports that he'd turn into absolute hilarity.
