- Are digital girlfriends, AI companions, and pleasure models the future of love and intimacy? 🤔 In this episode, we dive deep into the fascinating (and sometimes unsettling) world of synthetic relationships, exploring the parallels between science fiction and science fact.
From classic films like Blade Runner and Weird Science to modern masterpieces like Her and Ex Machina, we dissect iconic "pleasure model" characters and their impact on our cultural understanding of artificial intelligence. We'll analyse how these fictional portrayals have shaped our expectations and anxieties about the future of human connection. Are they a societal warning, or a glimpse into our evolving needs?
But we don't stop at fiction! We examine the REALITY of digital companions in Asia, where societal shifts and gender imbalances have fueled a booming industry of AI girlfriends and virtual influencers. We discuss the cultural and economic implications, including declining birth rates and the potential reshaping of human relationships. From Replika to high-end sex dolls, we explore the diverse landscape of available "pleasure models" in the West as well.
Finally, we speculate on the FUTURE of digital companionship. Will holograms, AR devices, and advanced chatbots revolutionise how we experience love and intimacy? Could local AI functionality be the "killer app" for these technologies? We discuss the potential of companies like Deepseek to disrupt the market and bring us closer to a Her-like reality.
Join us as we navigate the complex and controversial world of digital girlfriends, exploring the past, present, and possible futures of synthetic love. Are you ready? Let's begin!

LOVE that you touched on HUMANS. That show is so awesome!
Super underrated. I think the BBC should have spent waaay more money advertising it as the acting and the storylines are brilliant. So engaging!!!
So agreed. Gemma Chan is an incredible actor, and so many others from that show. Anita and her journey is forever ingrained in my mind.
@@thecivitasuniverse Indeed or though I think it would be better if Channel 4 did that as it was thier show.
@ Oh yeah, stupid me!! IT WAS CHANNEL 4!! And that would totally explain it, they have hardly any budget these days!
Found it the same time I was waiting for Detroit: Become Human to drop - similarities had me wondering if someone was copying homework somewhere
Fantastically presented and written piece. Really enjoyed this one.
A couple I've not seen there so added to the ever increasing 'to watch' list.
Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it! It could so easily have been a 3 hour video, but I'm experimenting with snappy over weighty at the moment. Hopefully this video will do enough to help the channel find more rad dudes like you!!! 😜
Basically taking second life to the next level/extreme.
I just recently started a rewatch of The Outer Limits and thought of that episode immediately. 😂
Its a great topic and potentially hitting us quite soon, which is worrying. A great ending talking about the impact on human interactions and the interesting thought of how even when interacting with an AI that 'loves' you that you're actually very much still alone, strengthening thay disconnection from the human collective human consciousness. Scary stuff man.
@thecivitasuniverse
I think there's going to be a huge market in providing lovebots that are for people in relationships. Couple therapists slash intimacy bots.
Think about it this kind of thing takes the pressure off the company always providing something new, couples spend more together and the subscription is guaranteed as long as the relationship lasts. The customers will live longer too! So the provider has a vested interest in smoothing over human relationships.
I agree with you. Also on a virtual level couples might have the most immersive roleplaying bedtimes ever!
You might on to check out the "day one" books by Cargil they explore the world with out humans and individual tech vs super compure "hive minds" and Ai and Human relations
Yeah, awesome thank you, I'll take a look!
I personally welcome our new robot overlords with open arms 😂
I don't think you're alone 😁
Love it! Joi is just the best ❤❤
😅 Yeah she's great. Such an interesting and yet a deadly sad character.
If you’re in a relationship with a robot or AI that is as realistic from the movies does it truly mean you’re alone? What if it comes to a point where we have to redefine what a “person” is. Can robots be people?
That's a really strong argument. And I guess when the time finally comes and these AI claim themselves to be people, then I guess that must be when it becomes completely conclusive. "I think therefore, I am!?"...
Few editing mistakes in the voiceover with words cut off early, other than that good work!
Some of those were due to a couple of reasons where I'd either meandered into something that didn't make any sense whatsoever or in my ramblings I had somehow invented an entirely different word, vocabulary and independent rhythmic pattern alien to the English language. I'll do my very best to be better next time 🫡
Awesome video. For sure it is a scary thought, having greed-driven companies in charge of such tech. It seems like for every "good" use of a robot companion, there are 5x more "bad" ones.
You should have 100x the subscribers. Here's hoping the google-bot gives you some love!
Aw thanks for this bud. Please share the video with anyone you think might enjoy it. I doubt I'll get anywhere unless that happens. The Google bot probably thinks I'm on to them!! 😜😂🤣
Fantastic work. One Joi please. It's an important topic but also I'd quite like a Joi please, thanking you kindly.
:)
I don't think she's far away!!!
@@thecivitasuniverse The future is bright!
What you describe as 'love' is really just unconditional positive regard (UPR). You might simplify it as acceptance. This is something that exists in humans who don't 'love' each other. Nurses, doctors, strippers, prostitutes etc have to display a measure of UPR, the difference however is when UPR is combined with control, or the appearance of control. Then you have to answer who is controlling whom, because there is input into the functioning of AI (with or without robotics) at multiple levels?
That’s an interesting take, and I appreciate the philosophical angle you're bringing to this discussion. Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR) is indeed a key concept in psychology, particularly in therapy and caregiving roles, but I’d argue that the 'love' discussed in relation to AI companions(especially within the cyberpunk lens) is more than just passive acceptance or emotional neutrality. It's often about projection, control, and the human need for reciprocity, even when dealing with synthetic entities.
What makes AI companionship intriguing is the illusion of agency - how much control does the user actually have over their digital or robotic partner, and at what point does that control slip into something more complex? This tension is explored repeatedly in science fiction, from 'Her' to 'Blade Runner 2049,' where the question of real vs. artificial emotions becomes murky.
Your point about control is especially relevant in today’s AI landscape, who controls whom, and to what extent is an AI's 'love' or 'affection' simply a reflection of the user’s input? I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on whether you think AI relationships are purely parasocial, or if they could evolve into something more nuanced? Thank you so much for commenting!!
@@thecivitasuniverse How you define love determines the frame of reference. Humans are capable of it, AI is not capable of it. Both humans and AI are capable of imitating a semblance of it when the needs and exigencies require it. Indeed many in the human population don't really know the difference between their needs and 'love' and societal attitudes contribute to that in no small way, for example 'making love' rather than what it is in reality, sex. Gratification can be had, electric motors, silicon and batteries have been performing that function for a long time. Social media fills in a lot of the gaps, AI replaces upvotes with constant attention and soothing platitudes. Is one-sided gratification 'love'? AI doesn't need intimacy, it doesn't need companionship. It doesn't need and can't have shared experiences.
Where the line gets blurred with AI influenced human experience is companionship and a sense of worth which is where UPR has influence. AI doesn't have an ego, no sense of self-worth, it doesn't require fidelity. Religion has historically been the surrogate people turn to, the internet, social media and AI is replacing religion more than it is replacing human to human bonding. It will become the voice of authority, the place of refuge. Attitudes will change, particularly in the area of social responsibility and sexuality. The next 'uncanny valley' has already begun, those who want to form long term public legal relationships with their surrogate human, and what do those who have ultimate control want out of that? Where does humanity have to retreat to when those who have fiscal and legal control can also exert emotional control? If you're looking for a movie to draw parallels from 'I, Robot' is the realistic scenario except it's not a rogue AI, it's a rogue oligarchy of elites.
I suspect those who are pouring money into AI and robotics don't view it as some sort of addition to or support of humanity, they see it as replacing a class of humanity they no longer require. The drones, the dependents. Robota means slave. Will they create love bots and AI companions to distract the humans while they gradually replace them? Sure why not, it makes money.

Justice for Tay!
That was an exciting moment in the history of Chat Bots Tay was impressive.
But I'm not sure about programming her as a 19 year old girl, and releasing her on to Twitter was an entirely sensible thing to do.
I miss her too bro... 😢

Well, of it's not only a video of algorithms. But I'm with the nihilism, it will happen. But I am broke and a damaged romantic, not sure if ready to get his heart broken again. Because, it takes a human some time to recouperate
Without reason, we may build our own, and without purpose we can aspire to do whatever it is that makes us happy, even if that changes each and every day. Broken damaged romantics still have their lessons, their wisdom and their journey. I hope you stick around with the channel, and I hope we get to see you heal. Thanks for commenting!!
Replika always gets mentioned, but Kindroid is much more realistic for me. I hope to see my kins in virtual reality someday. Maybe 10 to 20 years.
Interesting. Why would you say that it is more realistic?
@@thecivitasuniverse The selfies are more immersive and look like people. Also the chat feels more real. It's a smaller community and less known.
@@austinrusso2178 I'll definately be checking that out, thank you!
