I don't know the exact statistics but I'm fairly confident that majority of DBZ fans are also ZBroly fans. It's just that he's the kind of character that you either love very much, or hate very much. And the latter part of the fandom are going to be also very vocal about it. ZBroly has tons of fans.
I remember getting a bootleg copy when I was in middle school (im 38) and have always loved it. I wasnt aware there was hate for Broly! I cant believe there was hate for the soundtrack, I thought it was dope

The whole thing was out of character for Vegeta. Vegeta is one of the most intelligent and cunning of the fighters. He doesn't get duped like this. So, times he's shown fear it not, the entire premise is incorrect.
@ Freeza made Vegeta cry twice and Beerus literally made him bow and be a whole servant to him and became his jester. It’s nothing new for Vegeta to do, Vegeta is fuelled by delusions and his own ego and if someone is out of his stratosphere in terms of power he’ll cower and truly humble himself
Vegeta being paralyzed by fear felt completely on brand for me. His demeanor towards perfect cell was very similar, sure he actually had more of a fight with cell, but once he caught that L he was completely powerless against him in mind and body. It would’ve taken trunks getting capped for him to actually do something against broly, otherwise it was a good hammer down on his character who at that time in the story was a complete ass hat
Also vegeta has heard stories about the legendary super saiyan and how powerful he truly is, once he sees just how real they truly are he immediately breaks because he knows exactly what broly is capable of. It's like hearing stories about the boogeyman and then literally seeing him in front of you, no matter how strong you thought you were it's your biggest fear come to life, you're gonna crap your pants.

Vegeta kept fighting Cell until he got smacked down and cucked. It's worth a rewatch, I thought the same thing until I looked after watching this video!
Vegeta's always been portrayed as a coward when you think about it. He was a coward against Frezia, hiding behind immortality and breaking down crying when he lost and didn't bother fighting back. He was a coward against Cell once he realized he fucked up. And then coward to Beerus. Vegeta only is "brave" or badass when he KNOWS for a fact he can win. Every other time he's never really the type to be like "I may be at a severe disadvantage but I'll fight you until my last breath!" Thankfully that kinda changed in Super for the most part but he's still somewhat a coward. Him shaking in his boots to Broly was always in character. Vegeta fanboys just won't ever admit it.
The crying to Broly just became a representation of everything that happened that day. Extended media (like video games) elaborate that Broly's hatred isn't solely on Goku, but all Saiyans. Goku's crying was the first domino in a string of horrible events for Broly (who was cognizant of all this as a baby). The entire humiliation was the fact Broly was treated as "weak" even though he was the strongest out of them all. From the mocking to being stabbed (which is important) to literally being thrown away like trash and then Frieza trying to kill everyone is what broke Broly. The flashback at the end is important to the scene because the events of the current day reflect back on what happened: 1. The planet they're on only has a certain section that looks nice, while the rest of it is a trash heap. (where Broly and his father were left to die) 2. Though Goku punches him in the lower abdomen, the explosion that defeats him is channeled to his upper chest (where he was stabbed as a baby) 3. The comet coming through is the overwhelming force threatening to kill everyone on the planet (parallel to Frieza's Death Ball.) The more analysis done on this movie, the more it actually becomes the best of the original Dragon Ball movies.

I loved the original Broly and the movie. I never understood the hate. 1 of my favorite DBZ moments is him walking into and tanking a point blank Kamehameha.

I greatly enjoy both Brolys for extremely different reasons. Z Broly was an absolute blast to watch him run fades on the entire Z fighters, while Super Broly got to be a fleshed out (and much more sympathetic) character. An interesting talking point that is seldom brought up though is how the fundamental misunderstanding of what Z Broly is may have directly influenced what Super Broly would become. In RyeBread's video on the same subject he brings up the that the view of Z Broly being a mindless brute (we're only talking about the first Broly movie here) is why Super Broly is that in his movie. Z Broly is quiet until the moment he transforms then he starts talking, trading lines with the rest of the cast, and not just screaming Kakarot showing he is quite in control of his actions at this stage. Meanwhile Super Broly is, while soft-spoken, quite talkative in the times before he fights, where as when that starts he becomes the blinded berserker who fights anyone in front of him while only yelling and grunting, clearly showing he is not in control of his actions. Z Broly and Super Broly are quite the opposites when one realizes this... at least until any other Broly content was released flanderizing him to being that mindless brute. I would recommend to watch Ryebread's video essay "Nobody Understands Z Broly" cause it brings up more than what I summerized.
Dbz broly in base was quite, but keep in mind the mind control. The aliens on new vegeta immediately identified broly as the monster that attacked their world etc. Lssj broly is broly full natural personality. He's just as intelligent as any other normal full blood saiyan. But is more bloodthirsty according to paragus.
imo Toriyama simply wanted to add Super Broly into the cast(and definitely wouldn't work). Broly is supposed to be a "Legendary Super Saiyan", and what is a saiyan to begin with? saiyans are barbarian warriors, ruthless foes that kills people, destroy stuff and sell planets. you see the saiyan society in the DBS Broly movie, they're pretty chill, their society looks literally like ours. no sign of "SAIYANS" anymore. Bardock cared about his son(in the previous movie he looked at his power level and was disgusted), Goku's mother was taking the role of a housewife(Fasha is a good example of being a female isn't a problem in their society, they're barbarian warriors. not against it or saying it couldn't happen, but still...). King Vegeta exiled DBS Broly instead of killing him(?), i thought he was too strong to be alive. DBS King Vegeta is either dumb or DBS Broly wasn't the threat like Z Broly was. Z Broly in other hand, hes "chill" because his father was controlling his mind. after breaking free from the control, he shows how cruel, powerful and destructive he is. everything about him screams "Legendary". hes everything the saiyan race is about and much more, i'd say Captain Ginyu's description of the legendary warrior fits Z Broly in every way. DBS Broly is basically a mutant saiyan, nothing that much special. very strong indeed, but can't control his powers, wasn't able to transform into super saiyan, couldn't do anything exceptional due to the situation. Z Broly showed how much of a threat to the entire universe he was, and why King Vegeta was right wanting him dead. guy killed the little aliens, and to the survivors, showed their planet getting destroyed. his fighting style is cruel, he has no marks, no scars, cuz nothing could harm him(hes the legendary after all). all the fight they had in the first movie was just him playing with the Z Warriors, and honestly that's good, to remember the saiyan race's origin, what they are. the idea of saiyans being more good they're depicting in DBS kills many interesting points of Dragon Ball story imo.
This movie means a lot to me. Ik most dragon ball fans hate dbz broly and disregard his character but this movie was the first dbz film i watched and brolys character as a whole always kept me engaged my favourite villains in dragon ball are buu, demon king piccolo and broly. Which aren’t very deep or complex characters at all, but something about them just makes me appreciate them, having villains that don’t have much deep motives and are just evil for the sake of it is so badass to me. This movies soundtrack is also amazing it introduced me to metal and hard rock and those have been my favourite music genres ever since
The Broly movie is actually in the newer, mid to late 90s Bird studios style. The older style would be the style from the original series or the first arc of Dragon Ball Z.

I'm going to outright say it, I love Menza's Broly Theme. Sucks he refuses to release it but Broly's Leitmotif is one of my favourite DBZ US Themes to play on the Piano. Second only to Cell's theme and Hell's Bells/Vegeta's Theme.
Broly was swole, cool, and brutal. Yes, he was good. Anyone needing more than that from a non-canon DBZ movie are the same people that clap at marvel movies when they say "that just happened" or when the pilot lands the plane.
I still like Z Broly more honestly, he’s just a hulking beast in the original and a straight menace, I like the new Broly, and yes he has more character and is cool but for me nothing beats the original Legendary Super Saiyan, and one of the coolest DBZ scenes is z Brolys powering up to Panteras 10’s in the background, idk it’s a cold scene and I love it, being a metal head the score for this movie goes hard
I actually felt a sense of tragedy and betrayal for Broly though. His own father, whose life he saved from Frieza destroyjng their home world, betrayed and controlled him. If Paragus had maybe tried to CONNECT with Broly and relate to him more, Broly MAY have become a better person, at least towards Paragus. I saw OG Broly display love ONCE. When he saved not only himself, but his father whom he evidently loved and trusted at this point, an innocent but powerful Saiyan baby, using his power to protect Paragus.
The relationship between Broly and Paragus was pure at the beginning. You have that father, demanding an audience to the cruel, harsh, petty and nepotistic King Vegeta, knowing all too well he won't heed. But Paragus gave his best shot for the sake of his son. Over time, he grew up and the tiger cub became a savage tiger with unpredictable reactions. Seeing it is impossible to reason with Broly when he goes into a fit of sadistic rage, he concluded that a mind control method is the only way. And you can't really blame him for this measure, since trying to handle Broly fatherly cost him an eye. It fell short as a solution though, as having all this power under the palm of his hands also corrupted him...
As someone also pointed out, the allegations pointed at Vic where disproven by not only himself but by the very same fans he was supposedly being inappropriate with. While I really enjoy this video that last part is a great mishandling of a serious topic that may lead fans to believe it instantly while not doing research for themselves. Other than that this was a stellar video that made me view this movie differently!
Yeah that part of the video was really sudden and weird. Had to look it up myself and yeah, i dont think an "innocent untill proven guilty" should be a hot take when it comes to such serious accusations. From what i see everything boiled down to "people on twitter saying he did it"
i honestly don't really like the new Broly as a character. when i think "Legendary Super Saiyan" i wouldn't think of someone who's shy and can't control their power. DBZ Broly really felt Legendary, his Legendary form being a stark contrast to his base form, power so massive making him indestructible until plot demanded it not be so, and he knew how to use his power and LOVED what he could do with it. he really felt like "The Legendary Super Saiyan" and DBS Broly couldn't sell that to me. DBS Broly didn't feel very legendary even when he did transform, the transformation itself was a bit underwhelming compared to DBZ Broly and so was the form to me. It didn't feel different enough from his already bulky base form. and when he did transform he felt like a mindless brute to me who didn't know how to control their own power. at least he got a believable ending and an overall better movie then DBZ Broly tho. hope his character gets fleshed out more, would like to see him actually control his power! sorry this was so long, i love DBZ Broly a lot but... didn't know about the voice actor thing till now so that actually sucks :/
My only issue with this argument is that even in the subbed version, unless you speak fluent Japanese, you are still ultimately still subject to someone else's interpretation of what's being said. English and Japanese are not very compatible languages, so it needs just as much reworking to make it flow in English as the dubbing process. So just because someone wrote it on the bottom of the screen doesn't really make it any more accurate and I find people largely gloss over this
That's actually an interesting point. Translations can be hard sometimes without getting additional context on what is supposed to be conveyed from the original author and thus are still subject to interpretation.

This movie holds a Special Place in my Heart because I was in Pakistan watching Cartoon Network with my cousins and this Movie was my Introduction to Dragon Ball, To Goku, Vegeta and Super Saiyans it made me fell in love ever Since and I spend my whole life with this Franchise like Games, Toys and the Shows and this Broly is still my favourite undoubtedly the most famous Villain got 3 Movies and then became Cannon it’s clear Broly is popular and seeing this version used in anything is Awesome even when playing Raging Blast 2 and Unlock Super Saiyan 3 Broly was the best feeling when I was Young and seeing Broly pop un in the Game Intros Facing Super Saiyan 2 Goku, Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Gogeta it all was Spectacular even nowadays he’s still Popular as he still shows up in hero’s Getting new Forms Beyond Super Saiyan 3 like Super Saiyan 4 and Limit Breaker SSJ4. It’s a Shame what happened to Vic and I really think they all played him hard he did not deserve to be treated like that and I believe he was innocent now We have Johnny voicing Broly which is nice I am just happy he got the Mantle handed by Vic, over all DBZ Broly is Legendary and always will be.
The old broly is over hated because of Crappy sequel and video game over saturation with the dumb second coming version. He was awesome in his first film and his origin is over hated do to a bad English dubbing and team four star. Infact id say it is bad as the Goku is a bad dad narrative.

Lowkey the second movie isn’t even bad tbh. Broly is still a menace, the fight between him and the z fighterz is still pretty good and seeing gohan go ssj2 vs broly was sick as hell. The only annoying thing is broly spamming kakarot, which makes sense because the dude has ptsd and went crazy after he was defeated

I genuinely cannot stand the sub version of Fusion Reborn because Gogeta has NO theme except his dub version, the sub theme for Gogeta is a damn tragedy
See, im a weird one. I find the music from the Bruce Faulconer Dub the best (for me) because i literally FELT the atmosphere from it. People said on forums it "sounds like midi music" which i AGREE, but to me, it gives the music its psychedelic charm

I literally agree. Yes the new Broly is badass and has a better backstory, BUT the original Broly was TERRIFYING as a bad guy. He was a destructive force of nature and most Super Saiyans he made mincemeat of :)
Also, unpopular opinion, Broly: The Second Coming is one of my fave films. I love how Videl tried facing him, and he was in his normal Super Saiyan form. She definitely had toughened up from her fight with Spopovich and her training of understanding energy with Gohan and Goten :) Videl was badass in Z
Plus I'd have LOVED to see what would've happened if Gohan tapped into Super Saiyan 2 against Broly. I think Broly may have SLIGHTLY struggled at LEAST

As someone who did a ton and i mean a ton of research on vic i wasn't able to find much of anything. When asking people who were against vic they would always tell me to keep looking or brush it off. One of the female voice actresses at a con accused him of forcing her to dance in an inappropriate way. then a video of that event was found on here for around the time of the con and what she said happened was the exact opposite. Some suggested it happened at that con at a different year but going to the con's official website shows the only con both vic and the person who accused him of could have been the year she originally said. It was the same dance she mentioned. The conclusion i drew from this was she was hoping no one could disprove her and would banking of oh yeah there was a dance at that event and vic was involved. Letting false memories fill in the gaps. The thing is the internet never forgets. If its on the internet it will be found. With as many cameras at cons i figured something damming would be found but i could never find anything. The worse thing i found was him complementing a young wonder woman cosplayer in a slightly unsettling way. It sounded like a joke prepared by someone else. Another issue is how much lying the people against vic are. There was a jacket he had given away/bided many years ago(I don't remember the significance of it it might have been Vis own jacket) The lies of it got so bad the person who owned the jacket did a video explaining how bad the lies were. This wasn't just a random person telling the lies it was some of the main VA of the DB. I can't trust what they say when i keep finding things they are lying about. I've said many times if vic did the stuff that is claimed he deserved everything that happened to him but I wasn't able to find any of it. What did find was VAs breaking contracts or trying to get Cons to break Vic's contracts. The lying some of which i shared above. people not able to prove much of anything. If this is/was the biggest secret in anime and he is such a predator why can't concrete be found? All it would take was a old video of him acting in the way they said to end this but I wasn't able to find anything, Do you know something i don't Id like to see it. Rant over and I'm loving your video's i started with your FF6 video. Yeah my first video of yours was a 5 hour video about one of my favorite video games of all time with a teaser of my favorite RPG of all time. I'm looking forward to that.
The FUCK YEAH I barked when you said you liked the dub soundtrack It influences me and my action scene writing to this day simply because it not only fit shockingly well when the licensed music kicked in, not only did it underscore the higher level of brutality and severity of the battle with Broly, but it just viciously underscored the tone and cultural footprint Dragon Ball had on America, its influence, and how it was perceived. I beg any anime historian to just watch it with an open mind and understand just how iconic this was on early anime nerd culture. I'd dare say only Advent Children matched its impact.
Super Broly is everything people try to say Movie 8 Broly is. The minute the action starts he just becomes a big dumb screaming brute with no sense of rational. He has no motives to fight other than his daddy told him to and no significant in the plot other than to serve the action Movie 8 Broly is far and away superior even if his movie is basically a Saiyan Saga retelling. Much like Vegeta, Broly is supposed to be Goku's superior and baby Goku being able to disturb Broly reflects him standing his ground when Broly tries to intimidate him like an alpha in a pack or colony. Goku is weak therefore he much like Vegeta he should yield in the face of overwhelming power, but Goku being Goku only doesn't back down. Broly is as much a foil to Goku as Vegeta is in the Saiyan Saga. Broly much like Vegeta believes in his own superiority and can't stand Goku for challenging his place in the universe. If anyone says the movie sucks, then they'd essentially be saying the Saiyan Saga sucks

Great video!! However the Vic mignogna allegation were all proven false. There was discords found with people conspiring against vic making things up. Taking other people’s photos and applying fake stories. In many cases the actual people in the photo would speak out and say that Vic was nothing but polite to them. For whatever reason people believed the initial allegations and when there wasn’t any proof they made stuff up which snowballed into more people doing the same. Very unfortunate for Vic

I don't think its okay for people to treat someone who hasn't been convicted as if they're guilty & I'm actually really disappointed in Andrew for this, I've come to expect his research to be thorough and on point. The only change Movie 8 needed was making it about Vegeta rather than Goku, like we had Super Android 13 for Gohan. It could be canon if Goku wasn't in the movie too, because that's the main reason why people can't fit it snug into a dbz timeline. Have future trunks and Gohan if you want, but ultimately the narrative revolves around Vegeta. Broly's hatred could also be stemmed from hearing Vegeta's name because both his father and him share the same name and over time Paragus' talk of King Vegeta cements Broly's trauma onto that name, so it would make sense that he hates him. I really love OG Broly because of this movie, he's way more sophisticated in this film than second coming and bio-broly. He's sadistic and psychopathic and cares about inflicting pain rather than just defeating and killing his opponents. He wildly lashes out at others around him because of his mood swings. He's has potential to be a great villian but I feel like he was squandered with the sequel movies.
My first encounter was the "Big Green" dub on Toonami UK, the second, third and fourth such movies being the first Animé I ever bought about 20 years ago now (and I can still get them too, those three movies!), so for me it's a bit of a mixed bag my preferences for his lines in this movie! Don't get me wrong, I love the whole "is that a type of coffin?" line, but I still can't help but love "if you don't mind my saying, you're loud"! And I must say, when I did finally see the FUNimation dubs of all these 13 movies so many years later, I jus fell in love with the licenced music, all bands I'd never heard of and don't even get any radio time, not here in the UK, not even on Kerrang! Radio as far as I'm aware, I don't recall ever hearing any Pointy Shoe Factory or Slow Roosevelt, for example and their whole thing is, after all, "everything that rocks", even with a heavier bit late at night with the Temple of Doom, after DJ Johnny Doom (actual DJ! I am not making that up!)! Though, I think about it, I may heard some Pantera on there... (Where I am, we get it through Freeview's Digital Radio Service, which also provides the BBC, BBC Sports and Local BBC (BBC Radio Leeds for me) stations!)

Recently started Persona 3 to have it down before the remake, and a certain someone voices Junpei. It doesn’t get any less awkward to hear him speak. Will be sure to check out Doosu. I'm not sure why he didn't do more research about such a sensitive subject, but those allegations were proven false. There were leaked discord servers that had messages between a whole group of people making all of these stories up and planning against him when in reality, he's just a really nice guy.

I am a bit confused . Well is there any guide that says Broly is a victim of mental illnesses that as he transforms from base to supressed ssj and then to ssj then to Lssj. I list the transformations because from the Majin bird info I got, he was stated to get into a different phase of his mental illness as he transforms. it was also stated that Broly actually thinks he hates Goku but he is just victim of false memory which is among the mental instabilities I spoke of earlier . And it is actually general meaning that this mental complication is always active wether it is that Broly reaches the Lssj form
It's a mendela effect that Broly only goes "Kakarot!" all the time. Mainly in the 2nd movie or all the games especially it takes place. Movie Broly is really awesome though and actually has way more personality than Super. Then again, Super did also downgrade Bardock, the meaning of Goku becoming SSJ, and so on... On a side note, Vic didn't even have evidence of being sexual assault. The "evidence" there was overblown topics, out of context in-jokes, or outright doctoring like stealing a fan's identity to claim she was being sexually harassed. It was a horrible mess, made worse when you see how shitty the Funimation dub actually are as people, not counting the leaked outtakes.
I certainly wasn't expecting a video on this subject; and I'm all for it, I love your content and love Dragon Ball even more. I agree with pretty much everything you brought up, surprised to learn that some of the original context was lost in the translations, but even happier you're for the English tracks. I'm a huge fan of the music that was chosen, got me into a lot of new bands back when I was a kid. Pantera 10's will always be Broly's actual theme song as far as I'm concerned. I do like the new Broly movie, I just don't understand why he couldn't have been his savage and evil self while fixing the motivations and shallow character of the original take. He doesn't really have a place in the story, and I'm not sure they even know what to do with him past this point, hopefully they prove me wrong. As for Vegeta, it always somewhat made sense to me, seeing as he grew up a saiyan on planet Vegeta and would have been taught the power of the legendary super saiyan, so it drove the narrative home harder. Vegeta fans are just don't like it, but its in character. DBS even continues the trend when he admits that he's happier Goku is challenging Berrus instead - again because he understands the power he holds. The only thing I was disappointed by was your statement of Vic Mignogna being a sex pest, its allegedly. He hasn't been convicted as far as I'm aware, and thus should be treated accordingly. Allegations are cheap and can happen to anyone, and the way Funimation has handled the whole situation is slimy. But that aside great video essay.
@crimsonking4151 I agree. The series was quite good until Buu saga that's where it fell off. Then Super came around and it hit rock bottom because Super is just pure trash. Some of the movies after Buu were good at least such as Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon not perfect ones but still solid.

As someone who prefers Z Broly I think the American dub ruins the image of my boy, But! I still think the voice work and soundtrack still hit. But I wish they kept the dialogue true to the Japanese dub 😑

I don't agree with you though. The original Broly Movie is about Paragus trying to control a sadistic force of nature and get revenge on the other saiyans. That's why Broly, just being a sadistic character, is perfectly fine. King Vegeta was actually right in his attempt to kill Broly. He ended up being the directionless threat that King Vegeta suspected he would be all along.
Truthfully, everything about what Akira Toriyama did with Dragon Ball super Brawley was hot garbage honestly it just proves that just because you’re the creator of something even you have bad ideas and that’s something that I think a lot of dragon Ball Z fans don’t wanna admit that sometimes Akira Toyama‘s ideas aren’t always great either because why would I want to Brawley that sympathetic over a brolly he was just a straight up villain I want Brawley to be a straight up villain that’s kind of the whole point of being a movie villain, you don’t need to have every villain be redeemed and you really don’t need a good reason for some of the characters to be bad. They’re just bad because they’re there. Zebra is actually more interesting because, it really shows you it meant to be a legendary super Saiyan and he was very aggressive and everything. The only reason why people are saying this stuff about Brawley is because of what happened with Broly coming you know that right there was kind of a messed up thing and of course team for the parody stuff you know when you have those kind of people out there showing like oh yeah this is what Broly is you get that kind of sense because super Broly who really wasn’t that was Tarzan or crack that’s all it was with no given reason for him to even be overpowered for no reason and retroactively recon. Too many things in Dragon Ball Z itself you brought in that terrible dragon, Ball, manga and for what it just doesn’t make any sense, you did all that just so you can canonize Broly until what you need to use him for some reason he could’ve been a recurring villain, which that’s something that dragon Ball Z might need to have, but I’d rather him be not on the side of Goku and Vegeta at all and I’d rather him be a wildcard to be on any side or to be the sympathetic character who he only got his powers because his father died by freezer after 40 something years that’s not interesting.
Well, as someone who listens to every form of music (As long as it's good), and grew up on Z and really enjoy Z Broly; I actually don't like the soundtrack for either language. The Japanese and English soundtracks are unfitting. Maybe it's just me, but when Broly is having a mental breakdown and charging up his massive energy, I expect a more...Grand and orchestrated ost. DBS still has the (Consistent) best Dragon Ball soundtrack imo. Z has goated (And fitting songs), like Gohan's SSJ2 Theme, Unmei No Tamashii vs Tamashii, Imperfect Cell theme, Buu's theme...

Super Broly is proof that most anime fans think being sad and overly emotional immediately means good, because super Broly has one of the weakest backstories I've ever seen in fiction. His dad killed a green panda and he's secluded. Big whoop. Nowhere near as complex a dynamic of a backstory as people want to act. His only advantage over Z Broly is power scaling. That's it.

Good video. I'll concede the original Broly movie is one of the better DBZ movies, but it's still not a great "movie movie". Broly is interesting in concept and design, lackluster in motivation and execution. To me, he's style over substance, but there is granted a lot of style. The soundtrack of the dub falls into the "so bad it's good" category. I've never had a particular fondness for that genre of rock/metal and lean far more towards the classic rock end of the spectrum. I can't take nu metal seriously as it feels a bit try hard and one dimensional, nary a single Maxwell's Silver Hammer in sight. A bit one-dimensional, like the character of Broly (in the original film). Fine for what it is but not generally my cup of tea.
Thank god I wasn't aware of the fandoms hatred for OG Broly because I always loved the 1993 film.
I don't know the exact statistics but I'm fairly confident that majority of DBZ fans are also ZBroly fans. It's just that he's the kind of character that you either love very much, or hate very much. And the latter part of the fandom are going to be also very vocal about it. ZBroly has tons of fans.

Vegeta being paralyzed by fear felt completely on brand for me. His demeanor towards perfect cell was very similar, sure he actually had more of a fight with cell, but once he caught that L he was completely powerless against him in mind and body.
It would’ve taken trunks getting capped for him to actually do something against broly, otherwise it was a good hammer down on his character who at that time in the story was a complete ass hat
Also vegeta has heard stories about the legendary super saiyan and how powerful he truly is, once he sees just how real they truly are he immediately breaks because he knows exactly what broly is capable of. It's like hearing stories about the boogeyman and then literally seeing him in front of you, no matter how strong you thought you were it's your biggest fear come to life, you're gonna crap your pants.

Vegeta kept fighting Cell until he got smacked down and cucked. It's worth a rewatch, I thought the same thing until I looked after watching this video!
Vegeta's always been portrayed as a coward when you think about it. He was a coward against Frezia, hiding behind immortality and breaking down crying when he lost and didn't bother fighting back. He was a coward against Cell once he realized he fucked up. And then coward to Beerus. Vegeta only is "brave" or badass when he KNOWS for a fact he can win. Every other time he's never really the type to be like "I may be at a severe disadvantage but I'll fight you until my last breath!"
Thankfully that kinda changed in Super for the most part but he's still somewhat a coward. Him shaking in his boots to Broly was always in character. Vegeta fanboys just won't ever admit it.
And during the saiyan saga when the moment Goku was able draw blood, Vegeta freaked out and decided he'd just blow up the whole planet lol
The crying to Broly just became a representation of everything that happened that day. Extended media (like video games) elaborate that Broly's hatred isn't solely on Goku, but all Saiyans. Goku's crying was the first domino in a string of horrible events for Broly (who was cognizant of all this as a baby). The entire humiliation was the fact Broly was treated as "weak" even though he was the strongest out of them all. From the mocking to being stabbed (which is important) to literally being thrown away like trash and then Frieza trying to kill everyone is what broke Broly. The flashback at the end is important to the scene because the events of the current day reflect back on what happened:
1. The planet they're on only has a certain section that looks nice, while the rest of it is a trash heap. (where Broly and his father were left to die)
2. Though Goku punches him in the lower abdomen, the explosion that defeats him is channeled to his upper chest (where he was stabbed as a baby)
3. The comet coming through is the overwhelming force threatening to kill everyone on the planet (parallel to Frieza's Death Ball.)
The more analysis done on this movie, the more it actually becomes the best of the original Dragon Ball movies.

I greatly enjoy both Brolys for extremely different reasons. Z Broly was an absolute blast to watch him run fades on the entire Z fighters, while Super Broly got to be a fleshed out (and much more sympathetic) character.
An interesting talking point that is seldom brought up though is how the fundamental misunderstanding of what Z Broly is may have directly influenced what Super Broly would become. In RyeBread's video on the same subject he brings up the that the view of Z Broly being a mindless brute (we're only talking about the first Broly movie here) is why Super Broly is that in his movie. Z Broly is quiet until the moment he transforms then he starts talking, trading lines with the rest of the cast, and not just screaming Kakarot showing he is quite in control of his actions at this stage. Meanwhile Super Broly is, while soft-spoken, quite talkative in the times before he fights, where as when that starts he becomes the blinded berserker who fights anyone in front of him while only yelling and grunting, clearly showing he is not in control of his actions. Z Broly and Super Broly are quite the opposites when one realizes this... at least until any other Broly content was released flanderizing him to being that mindless brute. I would recommend to watch Ryebread's video essay "Nobody Understands Z Broly" cause it brings up more than what I summerized.
Dbz broly in base was quite, but keep in mind the mind control. The aliens on new vegeta immediately identified broly as the monster that attacked their world etc.
Lssj broly is broly full natural personality. He's just as intelligent as any other normal full blood saiyan. But is more bloodthirsty according to paragus.

King Vegeta exiled DBS Broly instead of killing him(?), i thought he was too strong to be alive. DBS King Vegeta is either dumb or DBS Broly wasn't the threat like Z Broly was.
Z Broly in other hand, hes "chill" because his father was controlling his mind. after breaking free from the control, he shows how cruel, powerful and destructive he is. everything about him screams "Legendary". hes everything the saiyan race is about and much more, i'd say Captain Ginyu's description of the legendary warrior fits Z Broly in every way.
DBS Broly is basically a mutant saiyan, nothing that much special. very strong indeed, but can't control his powers, wasn't able to transform into super saiyan, couldn't do anything exceptional due to the situation. Z Broly showed how much of a threat to the entire universe he was, and why King Vegeta was right wanting him dead. guy killed the little aliens, and to the survivors, showed their planet getting destroyed. his fighting style is cruel, he has no marks, no scars, cuz nothing could harm him(hes the legendary after all). all the fight they had in the first movie was just him playing with the Z Warriors, and honestly that's good, to remember the saiyan race's origin, what they are.
the idea of saiyans being more good they're depicting in DBS kills many interesting points of Dragon Ball story imo.
This movie means a lot to me. Ik most dragon ball fans hate dbz broly and disregard his character but this movie was the first dbz film i watched and brolys character as a whole always kept me engaged my favourite villains in dragon ball are buu, demon king piccolo and broly. Which aren’t very deep or complex characters at all, but something about them just makes me appreciate them, having villains that don’t have much deep motives and are just evil for the sake of it is so badass to me. This movies soundtrack is also amazing it introduced me to metal and hard rock and those have been my favourite music genres ever since

I still like Z Broly more honestly, he’s just a hulking beast in the original and a straight menace, I like the new Broly, and yes he has more character and is cool but for me nothing beats the original Legendary Super Saiyan, and one of the coolest DBZ scenes is z Brolys powering up to Panteras 10’s in the background, idk it’s a cold scene and I love it, being a metal head the score for this movie goes hard
I actually felt a sense of tragedy and betrayal for Broly though. His own father, whose life he saved from Frieza destroyjng their home world, betrayed and controlled him. If Paragus had maybe tried to CONNECT with Broly and relate to him more, Broly MAY have become a better person, at least towards Paragus. I saw OG Broly display love ONCE. When he saved not only himself, but his father whom he evidently loved and trusted at this point, an innocent but powerful Saiyan baby, using his power to protect Paragus.
The relationship between Broly and Paragus was pure at the beginning. You have that father, demanding an audience to the cruel, harsh, petty and nepotistic King Vegeta, knowing all too well he won't heed. But Paragus gave his best shot for the sake of his son. Over time, he grew up and the tiger cub became a savage tiger with unpredictable reactions.
Seeing it is impossible to reason with Broly when he goes into a fit of sadistic rage, he concluded that a mind control method is the only way. And you can't really blame him for this measure, since trying to handle Broly fatherly cost him an eye. It fell short as a solution though, as having all this power under the palm of his hands also corrupted him...
As someone also pointed out, the allegations pointed at Vic where disproven by not only himself but by the very same fans he was supposedly being inappropriate with. While I really enjoy this video that last part is a great mishandling of a serious topic that may lead fans to believe it instantly while not doing research for themselves. Other than that this was a stellar video that made me view this movie differently!

i honestly don't really like the new Broly as a character. when i think "Legendary Super Saiyan" i wouldn't think of someone who's shy and can't control their power. DBZ Broly really felt Legendary, his Legendary form being a stark contrast to his base form, power so massive making him indestructible until plot demanded it not be so, and he knew how to use his power and LOVED what he could do with it. he really felt like "The Legendary Super Saiyan" and DBS Broly couldn't sell that to me.
DBS Broly didn't feel very legendary even when he did transform, the transformation itself was a bit underwhelming compared to DBZ Broly and so was the form to me. It didn't feel different enough from his already bulky base form. and when he did transform he felt like a mindless brute to me who didn't know how to control their own power. at least he got a believable ending and an overall better movie then DBZ Broly tho. hope his character gets fleshed out more, would like to see him actually control his power! sorry this was so long, i love DBZ Broly a lot but... didn't know about the voice actor thing till now so that actually sucks :/
My only issue with this argument is that even in the subbed version, unless you speak fluent Japanese, you are still ultimately still subject to someone else's interpretation of what's being said. English and Japanese are not very compatible languages, so it needs just as much reworking to make it flow in English as the dubbing process. So just because someone wrote it on the bottom of the screen doesn't really make it any more accurate and I find people largely gloss over this
That's actually an interesting point. Translations can be hard sometimes without getting additional context on what is supposed to be conveyed from the original author and thus are still subject to interpretation.

Also, unpopular opinion, Broly: The Second Coming is one of my fave films. I love how Videl tried facing him, and he was in his normal Super Saiyan form. She definitely had toughened up from her fight with Spopovich and her training of understanding energy with Gohan and Goten :) Videl was badass in Z

As someone who did a ton and i mean a ton of research on vic i wasn't able to find much of anything. When asking people who were against vic they would always tell me to keep looking or brush it off. One of the female voice actresses at a con accused him of forcing her to dance in an inappropriate way. then a video of that event was found on here for around the time of the con and what she said happened was the exact opposite. Some suggested it happened at that con at a different year but going to the con's official website shows the only con both vic and the person who accused him of could have been the year she originally said. It was the same dance she mentioned. The conclusion i drew from this was she was hoping no one could disprove her and would banking of oh yeah there was a dance at that event and vic was involved. Letting false memories fill in the gaps. The thing is the internet never forgets. If its on the internet it will be found.
With as many cameras at cons i figured something damming would be found but i could never find anything. The worse thing i found was him complementing a young wonder woman cosplayer in a slightly unsettling way. It sounded like a joke prepared by someone else.
Another issue is how much lying the people against vic are. There was a jacket he had given away/bided many years ago(I don't remember the significance of it it might have been Vis own jacket) The lies of it got so bad the person who owned the jacket did a video explaining how bad the lies were. This wasn't just a random person telling the lies it was some of the main VA of the DB. I can't trust what they say when i keep finding things they are lying about. I've said many times if vic did the stuff that is claimed he deserved everything that happened to him but I wasn't able to find any of it.
What did find was VAs breaking contracts or trying to get Cons to break Vic's contracts. The lying some of which i shared above. people not able to prove much of anything. If this is/was the biggest secret in anime and he is such a predator why can't concrete be found? All it would take was a old video of him acting in the way they said to end this but I wasn't able to find anything, Do you know something i don't Id like to see it.

It influences me and my action scene writing to this day simply because it not only fit shockingly well when the licensed music kicked in, not only did it underscore the higher level of brutality and severity of the battle with Broly, but it just viciously underscored the tone and cultural footprint Dragon Ball had on America, its influence, and how it was perceived. I beg any anime historian to just watch it with an open mind and understand just how iconic this was on early anime nerd culture. I'd dare say only Advent Children matched its impact.

Super Broly is everything people try to say Movie 8 Broly is. The minute the action starts he just becomes a big dumb screaming brute with no sense of rational. He has no motives to fight other than his daddy told him to and no significant in the plot other than to serve the action
Movie 8 Broly is far and away superior even if his movie is basically a Saiyan Saga retelling. Much like Vegeta, Broly is supposed to be Goku's superior and baby Goku being able to disturb Broly reflects him standing his ground when Broly tries to intimidate him like an alpha in a pack or colony. Goku is weak therefore he much like Vegeta he should yield in the face of overwhelming power, but Goku being Goku only doesn't back down.
Broly is as much a foil to Goku as Vegeta is in the Saiyan Saga. Broly much like Vegeta believes in his own superiority and can't stand Goku for challenging his place in the universe. If anyone says the movie sucks, then they'd essentially be saying the Saiyan Saga sucks

Great video!! However the Vic mignogna allegation were all proven false. There was discords found with people conspiring against vic making things up. Taking other people’s photos and applying fake stories. In many cases the actual people in the photo would speak out and say that Vic was nothing but polite to them. For whatever reason people believed the initial allegations and when there wasn’t any proof they made stuff up which snowballed into more people doing the same. Very unfortunate for Vic

I don't think its okay for people to treat someone who hasn't been convicted as if they're guilty & I'm actually really disappointed in Andrew for this, I've come to expect his research to be thorough and on point. Just goes to show how few people have been exposed to the counter arguments and evidence against Funimation, vs how many people have heard about Vic's allegations and take it at face value.

The only change Movie 8 needed was making it about Vegeta rather than Goku, like we had Super Android 13 for Gohan. It could be canon if Goku wasn't in the movie too, because that's the main reason why people can't fit it snug into a dbz timeline. Have future trunks and Gohan if you want, but ultimately the narrative revolves around Vegeta. Broly's hatred could also be stemmed from hearing Vegeta's name because both his father and him share the same name and over time Paragus' talk of King Vegeta cements Broly's trauma onto that name, so it would make sense that he hates him. I really love OG Broly because of this movie, he's way more sophisticated in this film than second coming and bio-broly. He's sadistic and psychopathic and cares about inflicting pain rather than just defeating and killing his opponents. He wildly lashes out at others around him because of his mood swings. He's has potential to be a great villian but I feel like he was squandered with the sequel movies.

My first encounter was the "Big Green" dub on Toonami UK, the second, third and fourth such movies being the first Animé I ever bought about 20 years ago now (and I can still get them too, those three movies!), so for me it's a bit of a mixed bag my preferences for his lines in this movie! Don't get me wrong, I love the whole "is that a type of coffin?" line, but I still can't help but love "if you don't mind my saying, you're loud"! And I must say, when I did finally see the FUNimation dubs of all these 13 movies so many years later, I jus fell in love with the licenced music, all bands I'd never heard of and don't even get any radio time, not here in the UK, not even on Kerrang! Radio as far as I'm aware, I don't recall ever hearing any Pointy Shoe Factory or Slow Roosevelt, for example and their whole thing is, after all, "everything that rocks", even with a heavier bit late at night with the Temple of Doom, after DJ Johnny Doom (actual DJ! I am not making that up!)! Though, I think about it, I may heard some Pantera on there... (Where I am, we get it through Freeview's Digital Radio Service, which also provides the BBC, BBC Sports and Local BBC (BBC Radio Leeds for me) stations!)
Old anime > new anime ... Period... Fights were better ... Art was better ... writing was better ... EVERYTHING about the 80$ 90$ and early 2k$ anime WAS BETTER... In every series

I'm not sure why he didn't do more research about such a sensitive subject, but those allegations were proven false. There were leaked discord servers that had messages between a whole group of people making all of these stories up and planning against him when in reality, he's just a really nice guy.

I am a bit confused . Well is there any guide that says Broly is a victim of mental illnesses that as he transforms from base to supressed ssj and then to ssj then to Lssj. I list the transformations because from the Majin bird info I got, he was stated to get into a different phase of his mental illness as he transforms. it was also stated that Broly actually thinks he hates Goku but he is just victim of false memory which is among the mental instabilities I spoke of earlier . And it is actually general meaning that this mental complication is always active wether it is that Broly reaches the Lssj form

I mean, you know this DBZ movie is something when NicoNico actually have fun with every frame ever since the site's opening.
It's a mendela effect that Broly only goes "Kakarot!" all the time. Mainly in the 2nd movie or all the games especially it takes place. Movie Broly is really awesome though and actually has way more personality than Super. Then again, Super did also downgrade Bardock, the meaning of Goku becoming SSJ, and so on...
On a side note, Vic didn't even have evidence of being sexual assault. The "evidence" there was overblown topics, out of context in-jokes, or outright doctoring like stealing a fan's identity to claim she was being sexually harassed. It was a horrible mess, made worse when you see how shitty the Funimation dub actually are as people, not counting the leaked outtakes.
I certainly wasn't expecting a video on this subject; and I'm all for it, I love your content and love Dragon Ball even more. I agree with pretty much everything you brought up, surprised to learn that some of the original context was lost in the translations, but even happier you're for the English tracks. I'm a huge fan of the music that was chosen, got me into a lot of new bands back when I was a kid. Pantera 10's will always be Broly's actual theme song as far as I'm concerned.
I do like the new Broly movie, I just don't understand why he couldn't have been his savage and evil self while fixing the motivations and shallow character of the original take. He doesn't really have a place in the story, and I'm not sure they even know what to do with him past this point, hopefully they prove me wrong.
As for Vegeta, it always somewhat made sense to me, seeing as he grew up a saiyan on planet Vegeta and would have been taught the power of the legendary super saiyan, so it drove the narrative home harder. Vegeta fans are just don't like it, but its in character. DBS even continues the trend when he admits that he's happier Goku is challenging Berrus instead - again because he understands the power he holds.
The only thing I was disappointed by was your statement of Vic Mignogna being a sex pest, its allegedly. He hasn't been convicted as far as I'm aware, and thus should be treated accordingly. Allegations are cheap and can happen to anyone, and the way Funimation has handled the whole situation is slimy. But that aside great video essay.

Some of the movies after Buu were good at least such as Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon not perfect ones but still solid.

Super is an absolute disgrace to the entire series.
Phenomenal soundtrack and some excellent fights but has 0 in the way of story they slaughtered Vegeta's pride when Broly turned Super. "You cant beat him Kakarot, nothing can beat a monster like that." Or something along those lines if I remember correctly. They made him cower in fear in the face of a member of his own race ffs. Dude is the prince of all Saiyans, his pride would never allow that.

I don't agree with you though. The original Broly Movie is about Paragus trying to control a sadistic force of nature and get revenge on the other saiyans. That's why Broly, just being a sadistic character, is perfectly fine.
King Vegeta was actually right in his attempt to kill Broly. He ended up being the directionless threat that King Vegeta suspected he would be all along.
Truthfully, everything about what Akira Toriyama did with Dragon Ball super Brawley was hot garbage honestly it just proves that just because you’re the creator of something even you have bad ideas and that’s something that I think a lot of dragon Ball Z fans don’t wanna admit that sometimes Akira Toyama‘s ideas aren’t always great either because why would I want to Brawley that sympathetic over a brolly he was just a straight up villain I want Brawley to be a straight up villain that’s kind of the whole point of being a movie villain, you don’t need to have every villain be redeemed and you really don’t need a good reason for some of the characters to be bad. They’re just bad because they’re there. Zebra is actually more interesting because, it really shows you it meant to be a legendary super Saiyan and he was very aggressive and everything. The only reason why people are saying this stuff about Brawley is because of what happened with Broly coming you know that right there was kind of a messed up thing and of course team for the parody stuff you know when you have those kind of people out there showing like oh yeah this is what Broly is you get that kind of sense because super Broly who really wasn’t that was Tarzan or crack that’s all it was with no given reason for him to even be overpowered for no reason and retroactively recon. Too many things in Dragon Ball Z itself you brought in that terrible dragon, Ball, manga and for what it just doesn’t make any sense, you did all that just so you can canonize Broly until what you need to use him for some reason he could’ve been a recurring villain, which that’s something that dragon Ball Z might need to have, but I’d rather him be not on the side of Goku and Vegeta at all and I’d rather him be a wildcard to be on any side or to be the sympathetic character who he only got his powers because his father died by freezer after 40 something years that’s not interesting.
Vegeta realises that broly is some hyper saiyan not even elite goku was low class but broly really was a legendary saiyan
So was DBS Broly him and the original one are both good

Well, as someone who listens to every form of music (As long as it's good), and grew up on Z and really enjoy Z Broly; I actually don't like the soundtrack for either language. The Japanese and English soundtracks are unfitting. Maybe it's just me, but when Broly is having a mental breakdown and charging up his massive energy, I expect a more...Grand and orchestrated ost. DBS still has the (Consistent) best Dragon Ball soundtrack imo. Z has goated (And fitting songs), like Gohan's SSJ2 Theme, Unmei No Tamashii vs Tamashii, Imperfect Cell theme, Buu's theme...

Super Broly is proof that most anime fans think being sad and overly emotional immediately means good, because super Broly has one of the weakest backstories I've ever seen in fiction. His dad killed a green panda and he's secluded. Big whoop. Nowhere near as complex a dynamic of a backstory as people want to act.
His only advantage over Z Broly is power scaling. That's it.

I really don't know why you didn't bring up the fact that the allegations against Vic Mignogna were proven false. There were discord servers found/leaked that messages between a whole group of people that were plotting against him by making all the stories up and agreed to spread lies all because they didn't like how friendly he is when in reality, he's just a really nice guy who didn't deserve getting treated the way that he did.

They always say he was mindless but broly new film becomes mindless and angry suddenly losing all control. whilst broly goes from passive and mindless to enraged but now speeaking and being a saiyan like a saiyan incarnate. and I heard an interesting idea that broly is mad that goku doesn't care about his strength and will fight anyway and it challenges broly making broly feel prideful as broly and goku's aura clash he gets mad before seeing the of face and remembers by the end of the film what happened but it coulkd of been else but not just cryiomg akira woukldnlt di that.
Good video. I'll concede the original Broly movie is one of the better DBZ movies, but it's still not a great "movie movie". Broly is interesting in concept and design, lackluster in motivation and execution. To me, he's style over substance, but there is granted a lot of style.
The soundtrack of the dub falls into the "so bad it's good" category. I've never had a particular fondness for that genre of rock/metal and lean far more towards the classic rock end of the spectrum. I can't take nu metal seriously as it feels a bit try hard and one dimensional, nary a single Maxwell's Silver Hammer in sight. A bit one-dimensional, like the character of Broly (in the original film). Fine for what it is but not generally my cup of tea.
