    I'm teaching myself TIG welding right now, too, so your videos have been especially helpful. It's good to watch the old pros like Jody and Mr. Tig to see how things /should/ be done, but watching a fellow beginner is far more inspirational. I'll definitely get the stubby pyrex lens kit based on your experience, and I'll recommend to you to get (or use) the foot pedal amperage control if for no other reason than it makes stopping and starting a lot easier (though there are other reasons - I'm just not good enough to legitimately take advantage of them).

      Thanks Jeffrey! Yes welding tips and tricks is a great channel! I definitely like his videos, super helpful. I just bought a AC tig with high-frequency for Aluminum welding, it’s definitely a great machine and yes the pedal is nice along with the high frequency starts! Thanks for commenting, TIG is definitely a bit of work to learn and I have a long ways to go but it’s slowly getting easier. Keep practicing and I’m going to do the same, I’m looking forward to hearing from you again! Take care :)

    The sparking is from the Mill scale that it on the plate. The metal has to be clean for all shale before welding or it will contaminate the tip the mill scale will jump up on to your tip

    4:40 LMAO Your the best Mike, I know so many people like that here at work. I work in aviation maintenance and some guys think if they spend 20K on snap-on tools it makes them a better mechanic.

      Haha! Yes sounds like we both have come across those kinds of people time and time again, just because you can buy nice stuff doesn’t necessarily mean you have skills, skill is something earned not bought. As I’m older now I see right though those kinds of people. Take motorcycle for example, I actually get a bit of a kick out of going riding dirt bikes on technical tight trails with a guy that has the best of the best and thinks he’s hot on the trails, every stop you find your self waiting for them ;) Haha

      Well in large part to your glowing endorsement of the Titanium 200 after we talked about it last week I'm now the proud owner of one myself. Kind of expensive to get going because I needed everything welder, bottle, cart, gloves, helmet, table, including wiring the garage for 240(thanks for telling me the right plug type BTW) but I got it all done and bought and now I'm welding again. Haven't really done that since high school shop class many years ago. Pretty much like riding a bike though after about 10 min I started getting my technique back and laying down good beads. I'm very excited about learning TIG but it requires me buying another bottle and regulator from Airgas so maybe later but I am gonna order those Pyrex cups for sure. Thanks for all the great content and advise Mike you have really made a difference!

    If I may be so bold as to offer advice. If you are using a low power welder use multiple small passes. This is the huge advantage of Tig welding. The" pink" cups are called " lava" . The difference is the gas lens. The gas lens allows for a better gas coverage. I have never used Pyrex gas nozzles , but I will see if I can try them out. Keep practicing. Don't throw away any torch pieces, you can never tell when you will need them. Good luck and God bless you.

    Gotta keep that torch steady and get rid of the “hop” otherwise you’re doing great investing in yourself and building experience. Let the torch weld and dab the filler on the leading edge of the puddle. Don’t let the torch burn off filler. I’m looking forward to more things on this channel for sure!

    I bought basically the same kit for my torch. The first time I used the Pyrex cup, I couldn’t believe how much better I could see the arc. The best thing I ever did to improve my TIG welding! I suspect you are correct about the poor shielding with the standard cup setup. The gas lens with Pyrex cup really does gives better gas coverage and visibility and is well worth the upgrade.

      Theodore Bowers If you mean me, I am running a 40 year old 800 pound 380 amp Linde boat anchor. For $200 with Bernard water tank running gear, torch & hoses, water cooler, and even some filler rod, I couldn’t go wrong and it will likely outlive me. It will weld anything I’ll ever need it for, tho it does take a 100 amp circuit to run it at full chooch......

      @@notajp sounds really cool I'm a beginner I bought the same machine Mike has the 200 so far ,I like it even though I don't know anyting ,, lol.
      Mike's been a great influence on me. I'm an old man just starting out welding now I'm usually pretty good with everything else ,so I learned I can manipulate metal just as well,, just got to learn no high school diploma,, cannot read and write ,,barely ,,never went to school makes life a little more challenging and fun,, from doing things I want to do was raised in an orphanage so you understand no family sounds like you have a cool machine and it sounds like fun thanks for getting back to me.. I'm really surprised to see how many different brands there are how many techniques it really gets confusing I think I overthink things too much I have to worry about money a lot so I worry about things that are not good expensive and losing the money by making mistakes it can hurt me pretty bad financially so I panic easy I think out of the box too much. anyway I'm rattling on sorry thanks for getting back God bless good luck

    Nice video Mike. I'm in the learning curve as well. The only comments I have are concerning gas flow and stick-out. Kind of a basic rule of thumb I learned from Justin on the Fabrication Series is: Gas flow should be around double the cup size. i.e. Number 8 cup - 16 cfh, number 10 - 20 cfh, etc. Stick-out should be around cup size diameter. i.e. Number 8 cup (8/16") - 1/2" stick-out. Number 10 cup (10/16") - 5/8" stick-out. But what do I know!? Very little! And I have shifted to gas lenses as well.

  • @lesfox2010
    @lesfox2010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you will find it isn't exactly the pyrex cup improving your weld, but the gas lens (mesh) that replaced the standard tube the gas comes out of (diffuser). The gas lens reduces turbulence and improves the coverage of the weld pool and that in itself will influence the final appearance of the weld.

    The sparking comes from lack of gas coverage, turn your gas a bit should help. The Pyrex I feel is way over price, don't get me wrong their nice but budget tight. I was a big Miller fan for years and had a Miller Diversion 165 that works fine, it was really basic Ac, Dc, machine. Recently just bought a Chinese Primeweld 225 Tig welder and I was amazed by all the features it came with and what it cost me less than 800.00. It's one Tig and sticks welder I am really happy with. Good video Guy. By the way, on Fabrication Series they review this Primeweld 225 machine

      Right on! That’s great to hear they helped you out 🙂 I hear a lot of other people’s sayings about things like “ your first welder should always be a stick welder because it’s harder and after that buy a MIG because you will be a better welder” things like that I feel are just nonsense, every welding process takes time to learn, I think if a person starts on one process then goes to learn another, there will always be a learning curve but there’s these things people make up like the pink cup thing, that you mentioned you have heard. I’m really happy they made a difference for you. Those pink cups have been around since TIG welding first evolved, to think that there can’t be helpful advices in welding over the last 80 years would be crazy. Thanks for commenting!

    Interesting stuff Mike, I might give them a try. I only have a TIG welder now having used arc, gas and MIG previously. I find TIG more difficult than any other, but as you say it gets easier with practice. Used it successfully on the heavy steel for the sawmill and shepherds hut, but my vintage Cemont does have HV start and 240V of course. I find that you only have to have the tungsten poking out of the lens about the same distance as the diameter of the rod.....but still manage to 'stick it' occasionally :)

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do remember that you welded your sawmill up with a TIG welder, I definitely need to just start on a project like a work table or something like that and TIG weld the entire thing, I find it to be the best practice to just build something and as you weld the joints I can look them over and improve as I go. Hey is that highway still possibly going through your woods? I sure hope not.

  • @arniespace

    The collet body with the diffuser screen makes the difference. The Pyrex cup is cool, but it should not affect the weld quality. Collet bodies with the screen are available for the old pink cups as well, and they do make a difference. We used to stuff some scotch bright in our cups to diffuse the gas flow sometimes. The less turbulence on your gas flow the better. Often times turning up the flow will make it worse.

    With the pink #8, 16 on gas flow. You could be blowing crud into your tip at 20. For the 10cup, with that nice diffuser, yeah perfect coverage At 20.
    I think it really comes to the diffuser, vs the 4holer for the gas flow being smooth.

    The gas lense rather than the regular collet is what affects the weld. I love using lenses unless I absolutely have to use a collet for certain applications. Also, I havent worked with this style of welder much yet but I'm almost positive that you do not need o-rings around the lense. Those green ones look like they are just replacements for the red ones on the backers. When you start, try the flick method by using the filler to bridge the gap between your tungsten and work piece and flick it away right as the arc starts. This will keep the tip sharper longer.

    • @iaahner
      @iaahner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, he's actually spot on with the o-rings. The pyrex cups are not internally threaded like the ceramic ones. The only way to make the pyrex stay is o-rings. You're totally right that the gas lens is what is making the difference in gas coverage, and the fact that he stepped up a size in cup. The pyrex isn't changing the welding at all, just making it easier to see. :)

    Mike, i found your videos while researching the cheaper plasma cutters and have to say that I enjoy listening to what you have to say and how you say it! Very easy going style! What you said about doing a lot with a little pretty much sums it up. I am also not one to run out and buy the best name brands. My other hobby is Bass fishing and while I see some value in slightly better quality reels because they don't mess up so often, I tend to use lower end rods. I am catching just as many if not more fish, than friends using the best of the best. Keep it up brother!

    I think the issue isnt the cup, but the way the gas is delivered into it. The 4 feed holes in the boss cause the gas to exit the pink cup in an unstable fashion and at perhaps a higher velocity. This movement I believe will induce air into the weld area. I think the mesh diffuser in the clear cup setup is the real key here. It allows the gas to smoothly spread out at a lower velocity and create a zone of slightly elevated pressure without inducing outside airflow. It is like the difference between adding water to a bucket with a high velocity straight stream(note the air bubbles pulled into the bucket with the water stream) and filling the same bucket with a wider lower velocity stream/spray(far less air induced). Thanks for the practical videos!

    I got that same kit in today, I like the Pyrex vs the stock pink ones too. The next upgrade I got coming is a flexible hose. The Vulcan 165 Tig has the worst hose imaginable… it kind of makes Holding the torch a chore..it’s awful but those flex hoses should make a difference

Even though the Vulcan Omnipro had more features I ended up liking the Titanium 200 more mostly because it’s much smaller and lighter. To tell you the truth I have only got a few hours to run the Protig the first week I bought it, life has been busy these days, but I really want to do the first video welding up a project, I’m planning on making a Aluminum motorcycle stand for my KTM 200, I really feel like I learn more when I just jump in and build something and learn along the way. • @melgross

      Another way that works really well, for scratch or lift, is to get a small piece of copper, just a few square inches, around 1/16 thick. Place that right next to where you want to start your arc. You can start on the copper, because the tip won’t stick. You then just move the tip to your weld starting point. That works every time.

    Hey Mike, excellent video! Looks like your Tig skills are improving quickly. I wouldn't have guessed that a glass tip and better diffuser could make that much difference. On another note, I'm a writer for ToolCraze.net and wrote about the The welders a while back. I recently had a reader comment asking if the Vulcan accessories would fit the Titanium machines and I haven't been able to find any info on it. If you can let me know if they are compatible that would be awesome!

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank for checking out my video! I know the Vulcan spool gun won’t fit the Titanium, and the MiG whip won’t fit, I think the main brass lug is different size but I know for sure the electrical connection on the welders are different, the pedal is also different. The torch however is a component that is quite universal and as long as you look on EBay for a size 17 manual gas valve TIG torch with a Dinse 25 plug they all should fit. It’s a bummer that the other Vulcan stuff won’t plug right in. Now I know this is beyond some people’s ability, but if I ever break my MIG whip I probably would order a sturdier one on line and just turn the end down on my lathe or make a simple adapter to fit it to the titanium, snip off the Titanium’s special 5 prong connector and wire it to the new whip. Ps I was able to adapt a Miller spool gun to my Vulcan Omnipro with a simple adapter I made on my lathe. Sorry for the long comment, I hope it helps. I will check out ToolCraze.net. Take care :)

    Something you should try is using the standard pyrex gas lens cups over that gas lens. I think you'll find that 99% of the results you're talking about come from your switch to gas lens, not the switch to pyrex cup. Other than visibility. I use both, for different things, but the gas lens is the game-changer here.

    Have you ever talked about the knob on the far right called inductince. I have not seen that before on a welder. Most welders do not have it to ajust. I have almost no splater when it's turned up.

  • @melgross

    There are arguments both way about high price, well known goods and cheap, unknown goods. Maybe, if you’re just starting out, cheap is better, because it’s too easy to ruin these consumables and small parts. But sometimes, there is a difference in performance, and the cheap parts make it harder to work when you’re starting out. Experienced welders look at this in two ways. It’s easier to make up for poorer equipment when you know what you’re doing. On the other hand, the better equipment allows you to do even better.
    Yeah, sometimes there doesn’t seem to be a difference, and that’s true. But I’ve tested a few cheap TIG torches from eBay. I found two to be made of zinc, plated with copper, instead of actual copper. Well, what do you expect for under $20?

    by far my favorite is a wv-17 with a stubby gas lens kit and a #7 cup and a stubby back-cap it's super small and easy to use. also, gas lense lets you use way less cfh for instance instead of 15-20 I use 7-10 cfh but your torch will get hot very hot. and I'm learning to just went through my first 80 cubic feet of argon. also, you hopping that means your moving your torch and wire at the same time I do the exact same thing no hate just work on it. what I do is wait for a puddle to form then add filler then move the torch then wait for a puddle to form then add filler, repeat. and clean your base metal it really helps. but this is me a couple days ago www.reddit.com/r/Welding/comments/efkvp1/tig_welding_help/
