I'm glad this disastrous injury is finally being understood for what it is. Thank you, Dr Perl.

"You should not use the term shell shock. It wasnt proper terminology".
It was literally like the most accurate name they ever came up with.

How could they NOT have had traumatic brain injury??? You got the impact of the shells hitting the ground sending shock waves that travel along the ground and up the nearest object, usually being a human being. And that equals organ damage.

Imagine being hit by a truck. Very similar..

The scene in the new AQOTWF showing the shells impact from a bunker was horrifying.
The men were writhing and holding their heads/stomachs from the force of impacts and shockwaves.
Sitting, waiting for a shell with your name on it. Would render any creature insane.

When we look at the old videos of men with shell shock, to me it is clear, that they would fall in different categories now. I've seen people with severe PTSD. But I also saw someone, who seemed to have split off in a baby like state, with the big eyes and awkward baby movement to accompany it. Poor man, probably the only state in which he felt close to safety: just see without needing to make sense of it all.
A third group however shows clear signs of actual physical brain damage: the organ the brain was damaged. Neural path ways, brain tissue, myelin sheaths...

War is not about who is right, war is about who is left

It seems "Shell Sock" is an extreme form of PTSD.
Which is rare to see these days on account the Military better combat training, on site psychologist, hearing protection, higher quality food, etc.
As soon as a Soldier begin to show sighs of PTSD- they can pull them out an get them treated to minimize the severity of this condition.

I have post traumatic stress disorder and share some of these symptoms but not all. I have seen footage of soldiers that look as is they have severe brain injury. One man would walk forwards, then backwards, then forwards for no reason. Another seemed to be terrified of a hat. There's is definitely PTSD but also brain injury involved.

"Shell Shock" was also a term used for PTSD in the past. You can read more here: www.brainline.org/article/history-ptsd-veterans-civil-war-dsm-5

@@brainline Oh I am aware, but either way thank you for the link and your comment.
I was saying the Example of "She'll Shock" footage that one can come across seem to show an Extreme form of PTSD and Neurological damage caused by the Gas Warfare used at the time.

This was frustrating and seemed to skirt around a definitive answer if this was a brain injury caused by an explosive shockwave.

Well, when we look at the videos of these shell shocked men, I think it is safe to conclude, that they would fall into several different diagnostic categories now. Indeed the PTSD, some very severe. But also split personalities trying to avoid more traumatic input. And then clearly those, who were suffering from physical brain damage. Those, who had all these weird ways of walking all the time: That's brain damage. They might of course have had PTSD as well, but what we see is the result of brain damage. What caused their brains to be damaged? A variety of things: too close to actual impacts and being literally shocked by the shells is most plausible.

Pretty much describes my feelings after mining in Sudbury Canada for 12 years.
Mines should be fined and mangers jailed.

Are there different types of shell shock and causes, such as victims of brutal rape, torture and criminal control of their victims..Spinal cord injuries, brain(frontal lobes)but always using rape as a main way of shocking a person into submissiveness?Until their victims are zombie like or mentally controlled.

Well, there's extremely few to no WW1 soldiers left alive now- each at least have reunited with their friends, families and wartime buddies- in the clouds. ☝🏻🥲
