Geoff has said that if he can't find something new to bring to a song, he won't cover it because- as you said- you might as well just listen to the original. He has an absolute gift for maintaining the heart of a song and the motifs that make it so familiar, while still managing to put his own distinct stamp upon it. And he sounds so very, very good while doing it! I'm convinced that he's a one in a lifetime voice, and he's just as remarkable as an arranger. Talents galore!
I can't stop listening to this one. I find that lion's purr feels comforting in ways I have a hard time explaining, and I love how he built it with the higher harmonies to keep it interesting.
Truely a hauntingly beautiful cover...I am in awe of how talented Geoff is. This cover has brought me to tears so many times. it hits so hard. Geoff brings such depth, sadness and a sort of resignation to this song. Great reaction.
Well thought out and to the point discussion of Geoff's musical choices by you two. Also, this is just one of the moist poignant offerings of a song EVER.....another case of Geoff continuing to amaze us by always raising his game. Thanks for your reaction😊
Oh my ……goosebumps. So hauntingly beautiful ..………❤. You two continue to just amaze me. I look forward to… everyday …to see your videos. Thank you so much, for putting a smile on my face every single day. ❤ 😁
Geoff is so talented in his singing and arranging , really a tremendous talent . love his layers of both complex and simplicity to make a gorgeous , haunting sound ...very reminiscent of his "High And Dry " version , I love them all !
I'm old, wrong generation to know this piece but it doesn't matter. Geoff is phenomenal. He did a song a year ago called Till Then. He said he was going for the sound of a grizzly bear singing a lullaby. It was written in the 40's from the perspective of a WWII soldier hoping his girl will wait for him to come home.
I, too loved the original. But Geoff made this so much more emotional for me. And while I loved those high notes from Chris Isaak, Geoff's came off almost ethereal - kind of like wisps of fog, for which the visual of this works perfectly - nothing quite white, nothing quite black. All greys. Chris Isaak made a beautiful song. Geoff brought in the pain and despair of the actual lyrics.
Great reaction and discussion. My favorites are "Saddle Up" and "Way Down" and really liking the next one too. Some once said" My favorite VP or Geoff song is the next one" that's true too, because you never know what you'll get from either.
Geoff Castellucci released his newest video on his Patreon Feb 29th. It is absolutely amazingly beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. He brought back his ghost cowboys from his "Ghost Riders In The Sky" video. I'm guessing he'll release it to TH-cam on the 8th. If not the 15th. I suggest reacting to Ghost Riders In The Sky either before his video. I love everything he does. My favorites are Rains of Castemere, Ghost Riders In The Sky, Jack's Lament, and his new one I mentioned above. Rains of Castemere is my lullaby. I can either listen to it for hours or it will soothe me to sleep. Then I'm less restless and it helps clear my mind. His new video is the same way except I can't put it on repeat until it goes public.
Voiceplay did a fabulous cover of Hellfire. To see Geoff's emotional range, i suggest Ain't No Sunshine and Way Down. My favorite, though, is probably Ghost Riders in the Sky (though you can't go wrong with any song in his catalog-- they're all good). His new one coming out in March is a sequel of sorts to one of those. 😊
Thank you for mentioning Eva Cassidy! I have a CD of hers, “Songbird,” and I’ve listened to it more times than I care to admit. Every song on that CD is worth a listen, but I especially enjoy “Over the Rainbow,” “Songbird,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Wayfaring Stranger,” and her cover of Sting’s song “Fields of Gold.” She had such a distinctive voice and a way of getting to the core of a song emotionally that made me hear it in a new light. She will forever be missed by me and many others.
Thank you for a great reaction to Geoff's cover. He has a way of reaching deep down into your soul. Did you know that all the voices you hear are all Geoff ? You may not see all his clones in every one of his solo covers but they are all there backing him up. He is so great at layering his voice ranges
Geoff Castellucci released his new video on his Patreon feb 29th. He will be releasing it to TH-cam either on the 8th or the 15th. He brought back the 4 ghost riders from Ghost Riders In The Sky.... Jeff, Jeoph, Goff and Daryl. It is absolutely undeniably beautiful.
That last line sounds to me like Everybody loves somebody. He just dropped a new one on last Friday, Unshaken. Love the cover art too. When I heard Geoff do Sounds of Silence, I had reservations just because I loved the Simon and Garfunkel original. I've heard the Pentatonix but don't remember it, heard Disturbed which I couldn't put on my playlist, just too angry. But I fell in love with Geoff's version, in some ways it has a more hopeful ending, so I feel your early reservations on this one. But it is just too good to pass up. You mentioned The Hobbit - Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold AND I See Fire - in my top 3. Jack's Lament is also right up there. Monster Mash was the first of his, and first of TH-cam music and fell down the lucky rabbit hole.
Don't practice the expressions. It is much more fun this way :D I think my favorite Geoff cover is I See Fire but there are so many good ones it's hard to pick!
I didn't really know the original of this song but I did hear it after Anglelina Jordan did a very simple cover at her piano, aged about 12. And I loved that one. This is a whole new take on the song, haunting and heartbreaking. Geoff is just so unique, in his voice and his arrangements. I know what you mean though. There are, to date, two of VoicePlay's covers that just dont do it for me, because the originals had a deep meaning for me and for me the new arrangments just lost that meaning. But two out of .... so many. .. isn't much at all.
Geoff is really great no doubt. Have you listened to what a 12 year old did for fun to this song. There is a fan made video: th-cam.com/video/5IAMF4FDfw4/w-d-xo.html Be safe. Elmar from Germany

Agree 100%!!

Thank you! And we couldn't agree more!
I truly think that Geoff is a musical genius. His talent is outstanding, but his technical ability is comparable.
Completely agree!

So many good shivers -- such a beautiful cover of this song!

@ilonadever - I love that one too, such an emotional song!
Time for another Geoff and VoicePlay reaction. They both do one a month and there still plenty of old ones. Pleeeease do more 😊

Oh my gosh, yes! What a wonderful perspective! Completely agree!
My favorite of Geoff on his own is High and Dry. Its so good

The most perfect cover I have heard was Eva Cassidy doing "Over the Rainbow". A pity she died so young, the world lost a treasure.

Caught that Deal's Gap shirt! That's just down the road a few miles.

I’m a bass and sing along to every Geoff Castelucci arrangement I can find.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Chris Klafford’s cover of this song is amazing! Please react to him. Love your reactions!
I just listened to this, as great sounding as his voice is i think its auto tuned though

Phenomenal…..want goose bumps …give a listen to Dan Vasc …Amazing Grace.
Leave it to Geoff to sing it in three different octives.
