I've always liked Ronaldo better; but I don't dislike Messi. I don't hate him with insidious reasons that sports fans (sports fans can be some of the most TOXIC people I've met) insist on.
I prefer Ronaldo's style. It's true and agreed upon, that Ronaldo has that "killer instinct". Messi has stated before that he believes Ronaldo is a predatory striker, and that's the style I prefer. Messi is amazing, truly one of the greatest, as is Ronaldo. I just think Ronaldo is more fun to watch.
I think Ronaldo gets hate because :
A.) He's a legend. All legends get hate. Always have and always will.
B.) Messi and Ronaldo were born in the same era. If either existed in a different time without the other, each would have significant less hate and both be hailed as two of the greatest of all time without being compared.
C.) Ronaldo is confident. If I was great at a sport, I would be more like Ronaldo than Messi. I like Messi, he's a great dude. But for ME as an INDIVIDUAL, I am confident and am not afraid to voice my confidence. If you look in the mirror every day and tell yourself you'll never be great, you'll never be great. And Ronaldo doesn't have that problem because he KNOWS he's a legend. Messi has quiet confidence but Ronaldo's is more outright. And most of us would be like Ronaldo but don't want to admit it.
Ibrahimović once said that Messi is a natural talent, born with the gift to play and Ronaldo is a byproduct of of course natural talent, yes. But of elite training, practice and discipline. Ronaldo has done it in multiple clubs in different leagues. And because of this, I believe Ronaldo is a more complete player. And that's ultimately just what I respect more. One is not greater than the other.
Look at their individual and team records, their awards, their playstyles, how they treat their families, their lives and find out for yourself which you prefer after you do YOUR research. Your preference is individual to YOU.
I remember listening to an interview with Ronaldo and it was showing clips of him with his son Ronaldo Jr, and I believe he said he wanted a child because he was lonely. He doesn't really have friends outside of the clubs he plays for because he's so hyper focussed on football and his diet and his children and family. And that's stuck with me, that he's a lonely individual.
I feel like Messi doesn't have that problem; he doesn't strike me as someone who people wouldn't flock around to be closer to. Ronaldo seems alienated and isolated at times because his focus is individual (scoring goals) and Messi's focus is less individual (getting team involved).
(And again, I find Ronaldo to be more enjoyable/exciting to watch.)
