I used to repair clusters for a long time not anymore, and I learned the hard way when I was young that if you find one issue with the soldering joints, best is to reflow the entire board and all gauges boards (Where applicable), from a business point if you fix just the issue, you save time and money, and in case another issue comes up, you get another business opportunity, however from a personal level i wanted to provide the best experience to my customers as I always considered my service premium, so I wanted to make sure that the cluster was fixed for the end of the car's life, so I was also fixing all joints in all gauges and replacing all electrolytic capacitors, that made the difference :), that made me to get tons of recommendations that double the times of a potential come back from the same customer or car. In case you fix clusters too that will be my recommendation.
Never put electronics in plastic bags, they create static charges that then destroy electronic components. Buy yourself a few anti-static bags from fleaBay, in assorted sizes, they are eternal. Also, especially older diesels, you can ether lock them if you use starter fluid on them. Sorry to be a nag, but yeah.
Damn you got some nice rides! Damn your friend got some nice electronic equipment! And damn I got the same Golf same color! , it’s a 83 2 door GL petrol though but yeah. 😁
Thanks for this. I've just done my S14a 200sx this afternoon here in the UK and glad to say it worked! It was my second attempt as first time I was nervous of hitting the 22 pins bit I think this was where the issue was. Some steady soldering and hey presto! Thanks buddy!!
Yea.. I got a new temp sensor and it isn’t calibrated like the oem. So my temp only goes up 1-2 tic marks. But it is at least showing on the gauge and so I know if it’s midway - I got a problem.
Stewart Motoring Mine’s totally dead. Sensor tested okay so I’m gonna check it’s soldering points as well when I check the Speedo. Video is a big help. Had this problem for years lol.
Hi all! I have the same problem with my 1990 s13. Do you guys know what material exactly does the mechanic use for resurfacing the joints? Thank you in advance!
you probably found out already : the big syringe is flux, and he sometimes adds basic solder to the joints he judges too small or too ugly, then he cleans the board with isopropyl alcohol.
Mine shows 25mph when idling lol I will take mine apart and reflow it all I’ll also be upgrading to LED bulbs and cleaning it inside and out while it’s out of the dash!!!!
Did this and replaced the speed sensor with a known good one. Everything worked perfectly and suddenly the speedo is now flat out dead. Yeah I think im going to give up on fixing this. Haha
Your girl friend . I saw that "speed Racer show up on her face ".... Lets see she has been learning how to build from scratch. They are still fun cars.. .I remember the clutch cable plastic on the motor side shattering in pieces from old age....

Very common problem on the s13. Most people will buy another cluster and trash their failed one.
Bark!
I hope mine got the same problem but my needle looks burnt
