Can you tell me how big the container should be? It’s height, width and how deep is the water? Thank you very much!!! My lotus plants are just starting and they’re cramped in a bucket.. I see that some of my new leaves are expanding...but the stems seems to be a bit too flimsy?
The best video I’ve come across on how to grow lotus plant from seed. Thanks for sharing. I’m now inspired to grow them in my pond. I live in Ireland with mild winters. May I know please, will they survive over here and if so, what is the most ideal specie and appropriate time to germinate the seeds. Thanking you in advance.
The best time to grow lotuses are during the spring and summer months. These plants thrive in warm weather and become dormant during the fall/winter. Thanks for watching!
My husband started some plants from seed this past spring. They are doing very well. He has them in a large Rubbermaid pond shaped container. We have a few questions: Can we add fish to the container and if so, do we still fertilize.? What fertilizer will not kill the fish? Any help is appreciated.
We can add fish like Guppy and Molly or even Koi if u have a large pond.. Guppy and Molly will live happily even in small or medium size pond.. Ppl say when we wrap fertilizer in a Cloth/paper and dig it 2inches deep in the Pond soil, it will not Effect or kill the Fish..
I wanna ask, if u put lotus flower in shallow water pond like that, can u get a big root? Coz i want to plant them for their root n flowers for food ingredients
When you see that tiny leaves are coming out of it , this is the perfect stage to transfer it in mud and yes you have to clean it's water whenever you feel it's dirty and if you don't want to clean it then put some fishes in pot ( Molly and guppy are best option if you are putting fishes )
Thank-you! If you are starting by growing the seeds in a bowl of water, then it is a good idea to change the water daily. Once the seeds have sprouted and you have transplanted them to a pot, then you don't need to do water changes any more. Just remember to water your plants :)
@@RicherNature other gardening channels asked to change water even after sprouting. But they've never shared bloomed plant's growth video afterwards. 😝 You're just awesome...!
If your plant is getting bigger leaves each time, then you should be fine. If it is slowing down or the leaves are turning yellow, I suggest adding aquatic fertilizer tabs.
Thanks! As for the lotus, make sure the container you're using is wide enough so that the lotus can grow and spread out. I would suggest adding fertilizer(preferably aquatic tabs) since the substrate you used may not have enough nutrients for the plant to grow bigger.
Hemali Karatella a option would be to install a water pump to help circulate the water. Example would be a mini waterfall, it’d help add oxygen, act as biological filtration if media is used and prevent stagnation from occurring. Another great one would be adding live fish, they’d simply just eat the larva and any critters that get in there. Plus with live plants it would give them places to hide. Overall it’d be a win win! Hope this helps.
How many seeds actually survive for you to produce all those lotus leaves / flowers in the video? I've tried many seeds but only 4 actually germinated so I'm not sure if I will get a good size batch or not.
Out of 10 seeds, only 4 managed to sprout then 2 made it to transplanting. What you see in the video came from just/mainly one seed! One of the two seeds thrived while the other grew very slowly. As long as the lotus is given the proper nutrients and sunlight, it should grow. My lotus had already made seeds that are now sprouting like weeds!
Hi, thanks for sharing! I’ve just started my second attempt at the seeds. I have my seedlings in a milk jug with the top cut off and in the sun. The seedlings are about 5-6” long on the first stem. How high does the water level need to be, and does tap water (chlorine) make a difference or not. My first attempt, the seedlings all got fuzzy and began to rot. I know I can do this, I just need guidance. Also, what medium did you use, to plant your seedlings in? Hank you!
Thanks for watching! I keep the water level about 2-4" above the soil but you can have it up to a foot. At first, I used tap water to fill the tub and later used rainwater to refill it when the water runs low. For the medium, you should use mostly clay/heavy soil so that it doesn't float and cloud the water. In my case, I just used the soil that I dug up from where the container will be placed. Also, it may seem overwhelming to grow your first water lotus, but it's easier than it looks. Water lotuses are hardy plants and do well on their own if they have plenty of sunlight and soil. Happy planting!
Thank you, so much for the response! They seem to be doing well. I have them in pond water without soil, right now. They’ve opened first leaves and second leaves are on the way. They are just getting some small roots, now. I have them in dappled sunlight. I hope it isn’t too late in the season for them, as I live in zone 7. Hopefully, they will do well enough to survive winter? I may wait just a bit longer for the roots to come in, before adding soil, as I read it can make them rot? Again, thank you!
Not sure if they can rot if you put them in the soil to early because in the wild the seeds will always be in the water on top of the soil. If you planted your lotuses in a small container, you can try to bring it indoors or cover it with a bag when it gets cold. During the winter, I left my lotuses as they were and it froze all the water in my container. After a few months, I saw new growth and that's when I transplanted them into a bigger pond and now they are thriving with numerous flowers :) It may seem slow at first but once the lotuses get bigger, they will grow really fast.
50% clay, 50% topsoil - I just used the dirt I dug up for the container. If you plan on getting substrate, get heavy soil so that it won't cloud up the water.
Oh my god.. that was truly amazing! You surely live somewhere with a warmer climate, otherwise nelumbos don't do much under 4 months of vegetative growth. Simply stunning. Did you use some fertilizer? And how much?
Appreciate the love! Surprisingly, I did not use any fertilizer on the lotus. I guess the soil was full of nutrients! However, if you are looking into getting fertilizer, I would recommend a product that I use (link in the description) for my water lilies. Fertilizer tablets are my favorite choice since they are easy and fast to apply and works very good.
