I just watched it again, how in the world did Kathy not win, she was the crowd favorite, best overall contestant that year. Miss Mississippi had it all. RIP Kathy, Mississippi will always love you and you will always be our Miss America.
This was the first Miss America Pageant after my family got our VCR so I watched it way too many times many years ago….so my eyes lit up with joy to see @PageantsHayDay had uploaded this bittersweet yet beautiful pageant. @PageantsHayDay , you helped me survive the last 14 months of lockdown, thank you.
this year was an inspiration! my time setting 1;39' 39" is my favorite part of the whole pag! that figure... behind. the mouth was amazing too. alligator mouth i say. when they smile u can see every tooth in their head and in a pageant thats incredible!miss tn desiree daniels, 1st ru to debbie maffet had this feature as well. i just wish vanessa had been there to crown her. many people who didn't agree with the outcome said sharlene olybwon because they knew she had never done anything wrong in her life! thats bs man.
ah harkening back to a time when it was on tv this year its only streamed, not even on national tv, and its changed oh so much the finale is not even on a saturday this time its on a sunday, what have then done to our miss america contest and for the 100th it should be at least in atlantic city where it started out at least once more for this celebration, what is with people today they got to uproot everything that we hold as a bedrock sheesh. :{ but they sure had some good singers this time around especially enjoyed the girl on the harp and spanish song
33:38 Miss MA won her talent prelim over eventual Miss America winner, Miss UT. It is stated incorrectly in book LOOKING FOR MISS AMERICA that Miss UT was a double prelim winner. Miss Ohio would have been the shoo-in but lost the title due to her arrest for shoplifting.
Yes, and her case was curious because she came in third place in the interview but then went down in swimsuit and evening gown while other contestants had irregular scores but entered the Top 5. At Miss USA and Miss Universe ot the 80s, usually the first 5 classified in interview then enter the Top 5...
I also felt that Kathy Manning should have made the top 5 during the 1987 Miss USA pageant. Miss Arizona, Diane Martin, (also Miss Arizona in the 1984 Miss America Pageant) was stunning during Miss USA 1987 (fun fact- Diane wore the same evening gown as Miss Arizona from 1980 who finished first runner up and was later crowned Miss USA after Sean Weatherly won Miss Universe). Speaking of repeated gowns, did Miss Idaho and Miss Indiana have the same gown on during the opening of the pageant?
The four points of the Miss America crown used to be 1) style, 2) service, 3) scholarship, and 4) success. Now, they only seem to focus on scholarship and the contestants have no style.
Has anyone considered that Kathy Manning Miss Mississippi would have won if not for the 1984 events? I mean its clear Manning was strong across the board. Maybe considered too sexy? I met her her more than once and she was one wonderful person! The State of Mississippi loved her!
I’ve heard that is the story from some folks involved in the MAO from back in the day. Had the Vanessa Williams scandal not occurred, Kathy Manning might very well have been crowned Miss America 1985, because she was, as you noted, “strong across the board.” As I understand it, the MAO was afraid of another sex scandal, but there were absolutely no skeletons in the closet with Kathy Manning. None. I met her once. I was a bartender for her wedding rehearsal dinner at the Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Mississippi. Late…1980s…1988, maybe? I have her autograph on a bar ticket somewhere in my ephemera. She was an incredibly beautiful, intelligent, and kind person to the entire staff who worked her event. Kathy Manning would have been an amazing Miss America. I still can’t believe she’s gone. RIP, Kathy. You’ll always be my Miss America 1985.
It was my understanding that Kathy's(Miss Mississippi) gown weighed 40 or so pounds because it was solid rhinestones. It was not sequined or beaded but SOLID rhinestones. ❤
I met Kathy twice. Once when attended miss university, she was r/u to Kathy Johnson and win next year and once she was judge of local pageant after she won. She was lovely gracious and very bright. Any other year she could have won at miss America. But Sharlene was just unstoppable! Had her first in every category. So Vanessa's trouble had no bearing on outcome. My opinion anyway. But rip Kathy! What a lovely lady!
No disrespect to Sharlene Wells (she's very accomplished) but Utah was the SAFE choice. Had it not been for the Vanessa Williams scandal, the more typical beauty pageant looks from OH, TX or MS would have probably won. The concessions the MAO made to maintain that wholesome image. MAO organizers were too concerned with preventing another scandal that the ladies didn't have a chance to win on merits and talent instead of just how MAO thought a particular state's win would promote PR for the competition. SMH.
Sharlene nailed interview. OH, sorry her voice was marginal at best and she was coming off the shoplifting fiasco. TX lost points for wearing that heinous gown. I would have went with UT MN MA MS. If you mute Miss KY talent, I would have maybe had her 5th. RIP Kathy Manning Miss MS.
I always felt Kathy Manning was a way better all around contestant than Susan Akin. She probably would have won in 1986 if Susan Akin had won MS in 1985.

Love the pageants from 80s and 90s - hoping for more state pageants

Miss NY was the BEST pianist ever!

RIP Miss Virginia, Susan Parker.
twas better show than the "bland" 2020 MA pageant under Gretchen Carlson management
Agreed
Miss Kentucky looked like she could be on Charlie’s angels.
Kathy Manning - Miss Mississippi died today from CV - only 59. sad.
12/23/21 We will always love Kathy!
RIP Miss Mississippi Kathy Manning.
That's a shame. She was an outstanding contestant.
Kathy should have won, she was the best overall contestant , she had it all.
SAD TO HEAR!
Miss Nevada and Miss District of Columbia competed at Miss USA in 1986, neither of them placed, although Nevada had a very high preliminary score.
Miss Mississippi ended up in 6th place at the 1987 Miss USA Pageant.
Yes, and her case was curious because she came in third place in the interview but then went down in swimsuit and evening gown while other contestants had irregular scores but entered the Top 5.

@@austinpink9018 Her gown at Miss A was rumored to be 50lbs

Minnesota beautiful Lauren Green
Sharlene Wells, Miss America 1985, was the first Miss America not born in the United States--she was born in Paraguay to Mormon missionaries.
Tx and miss and NY were favs

Had she worn this gown at MUSA 1987, the would have made the Top 5. Her gown at USA was terrible.

@@pageantsheydayI heard the shoplifting charge was ultimately dismissed
I wonder if the shoplifting conviction prevented Miss Ohio from winning the crown
4th runner-up: NO; 3rd runner-up: NO; 2nd runner-up: YES; 1st runner-up: YES; winner: NO.
Miss South Carolina is the wife of my former Pastor! We absolutely love her!
