In this video, we take a look at Sim Flight Ventures "Epic Ops" mission pack, for the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), we'll be putting our skills to the test, flying our aircraft in IMC conditions, without flying IFR. Our flight will take us from Kelowna (CYLW) over to Kaslo (CBR2) and should make for an interesting challenge!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations I find that very useful when watching these types of simulations. For the ones taking this videos extremely seriously it's always nice to see the normal steps again to keep the mind fresh
Awesome stuff! I would love to see more of these challenge videos where you demonstrate older navigational styles, inclement weather or specialized ops (STOL, Agricultural, Cargo).
But most importantly the best videos are the ones where I can tell you enjoyed making them. I imagine sometimes doing the same type of videos over and over can become tedious.

Cheers Bread, I’m really happy to hear that you enjoyed the video! I’m forever meaning to make more content along these lines (it’s something a little bit different isn’t it), but there always some review or another coming up haha (and they tend to be the more popular vids).
Your point is certainly a valid one: I always enjoy the flights themselves, but sometimes the review / video making process can become a little bit of grind. Reviews can tend to be a bit formulaic (although I suppose that’s at least partially my fault haha) and the TH-cam algorithm can certainly be a cruel mistress. I really ought to do more of what I like, rather than what I think will be good for the channel, but that’s easier said than done ha. Either way, as you correctly surmised, I very much enjoyed making this one ; )

@Into the Blue Simulations wonderful! Please know that I enjoy your reviews very much as well. Anyone can watch and get a complete idea as to the flying and systems experience.
So in my opinion you essentially make tutorial reviews which are multi-scope and also very pleasant to watch.
I think ultimately you should derive pleasure from sharing your expertise with us, and I could tell that flying warbirds and doing high risk ops scratched an itch maybe you don't attend to as often as you'd like.
Either way I'd gladly watch you follow The Magenta Line or shun those dastardly screens altogether, as long as you find joy in it.

Don’t get me wrong, overall I certainly very much enjoy what I do here on TH-cam and feel very lucky to be able to do it. The fact that so many people have been supportive of the channel is genuinely amazing and as cheesy as it sounds, it’s great to be able to offer up something to the community. I think like most of us, I enjoy using the sim to create experiences that I’ll probably never have otherwise, hence why I love the warbirds, fast jets etc haha. I haven’t been able to record as much as I would like recently, but I have a new PC on the way soon, so hopefully I can get back into it and start having some fun : )

It’s certainly not legally a thing haha, but I’m sure it does go on from time to time, in the bush, wilderness etc - guys pushing the limits, in order to “get the job done” (though not to this degree!). The video explains the situation a little bit more but, this was really a “what if” scenario.

414 is "my" GA aircraft. Buying new aircraft, and the cult of the new wears off after a few hours, and then back to the 414.
Cockpit is readable with large instruments, and it feels heavy in the air. - Fsrealisticpro and Fsltl are mandatory addons.
Old school navigation was my only way of flying. Could be too demanding at times.
Now I am both old and lazy, and learned how to operate and love Garmin 750. A perfect match for the 414. Cruising all over the world in all weather, discovering yaw dropping places

The C414 is a classic in MSFS at this point and whilst I still think the C310 is technically more accomplished, the 414 is generally my preferred twin also - I love the avionics setup / cockpit layout / flight model and sounds.
Haha, I’ve joined you on the Garmin: I never used to get the appeal of using a GPS, but ever since I reviewed the TDS GTNXi, I’ve been a big fan (and the touchscreen functionality is a big bonus in a sim also).

I stumbled across your channel a bit by accident ("Happy little accidents" like...Bob Ross smile) - i was looking for an issue i have with MSFS, ended up watching the Concord series and followed the rabbit hole to this Video now...and i have to say, i'm absolutely blown away. Not only that you have real world experience (it shows...A LOT), the "Pilot Voice" comes out and has something strangely soothing, they joy comes through as well. Not only that, but the nice little ATC additions and the music selection are absolutely excellent.
The Head Tracking does wonders to make it feel a lot more "alive".
The Wonderful interactions in the comments are also something really great to see. I hope you don't get discouraged by some of the inevitable negative comments and keep it up.

I certainly try my best to create engaging content and whilst it inevitably wont be to everyone's tastes, I enjoy the process and the fact the fact that I get to share my enjoyment of the hobby (that some people seem to get something out of the videos, is amazing also)!
Of course, this being the internet, not all comments are as kind as yours haha; whilst frustrating at times, it certainly doesn't put me off (I generally derive some sort of peculiar amusement from nasty comments ha). The flight sim community can be a little bit unkind to one another at times and another little mission of the channel, is to try and do away with any nastiness and / or elitism where I can ; )

MSFS is indeed perfect for this sort of flying: The sim still has areas that could use some work, but no other sim comes close, when it comes to recreating the “feeling” of the weather and the C414 is just perfect for these sorts of flights.

Its fantastic to see some of these older procedures bought to life. The FSW414 is a great platform to do them in as well. Watching this really reignited something in me, where I recall trying to figure VOR navigation out as a 12 year old with Flight Sim 2 on C64 just a few years ago 😉and not really understanding it, but knowing I wanted the challenge. Now with one quick demonstration I can picture this and now have a much better sim that I can revisit all this with
Cheers Brett! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and indeed that it’s motivated you to give some more IFR flying a go - the C414 is indeed the perfect platform for this sort of thing.
I went through much the same process when I was younger, keen to learn the mysteries of IFR flying and slowly figuring things out one by one haha. FS2000-FSX was a real “golden age” for this sort of learning, as the sims used to come with some excellent tutorial materials as standard (a real shame that we no longer have that).

Wow. Just, wow! Love the 414, flying over some amazing scenery - best viewed without the cloud, to be fair. Some great precision flying. At times, it was as if you were in a huge tupperware bowl. As you said, it's definitely not a flight for real life. One of your best videos yet. Thanks.

Great to watch a real world ATP rated pilot so professionally...and easily...do the voo doo that you do so well. I'm a single engine, VFR rated pilot that can fly IFR approaches on the SIM, but you make it look far easier than it really is. LOL You're a flight BOSS in any cockpit. I'd fly with you anywhere in any plane. This was EXCELLENT.

Hmm, I just “turned it on” haha. I set the rotary to WX (or whatever it’s labelled as) and it all worked just fine. Are you running the most up to date version of the aircraft, perhaps that’s the issue? Otherwise perhaps the PMS GNS mod is interfering (if you’re using that)? I think the weather radar just makes use of the default Asobo implementation, but it’s still nice to have of course.

Probably a strange conncection to make, but this reminds me of when I did a perfect triangulation in Silent Hunter III. Zero assistance modes and the weather was just as bad as in your video, so the periscope was of no use. I triangulated an enemy ship's position just by ear, going by the direction and the volume of the engine sounds at three different points in time, using nothing but hand drawn lines and Xs on the map to establish the course of the ship and the firing solution. When I actually heard the torpedos make the impact it was a real sense of accomplishment.
Haha! I can totally relate to that, Jigsaw. I’m a big fan of Silent Hunter IV: Wolves of the Pacific (though sadly I can never find the time to play it these days). My skills are probably so-so overall, but I once managed to pull off a shot pretty much as you describe and the satisfaction of doing so was significant (it’s a moment that has stuck with me to this day haha).

Now this is how we learned to fly 30 years ago but with nowadays used GPS equipment not doing anymore…….although I would never do this in RL it is great to practice it in the sim! You must be (have been) a FI for sure…. The way you explain things, keep track and stay ahead of the aircraft is great. 👌
Likewise Ben; whilst GPS' were certainly around when I was learning to fly (albeit not that common), we were never allowed to use them because "what will you do if it fails?" (which always made me chuckle, because the chances of one misreading a map, are probably much higher than a GPS failing haha). It's certainly far more satisfying navigating the "old fashioned" way though and whilst yes, one definitely wouldn't be wanting to do this sort of thing in the real world haha, it makes for a great challenge in the sim.
I actually never had a spell as an FI, though it is something I would like to do at some point. For now I just live vicariously through TH-cam ; )

its nice to see that the old steam gauges are still being used the developers tend to make new aircraft with the garmins which are easy to use but for old school flying bring back the steam gauges
Yes, a lot of addons tend to end up with the Garmin avionics; I suppose it’s easier for the devs and glass cockpits are also becoming more common in fairness. You can’t beat a good steam gauge though and I still see a lot of interest / passion for mechanical instruments (from my viewers), which is great to see!

Indeed Mark! A little bit easier to do in the sim vs reality (no distractions / vestibular system trying to trip you up haha), but the principle / challenge remains the same. I very much enjoyed recording this one, so I’m really glad you enjoyed watching it : )

Excellent video and a very challenging flight. I did fly a Mooney from Powell River BC up to Bute Inlet and landed on a cut out strip at Homathko a few years back. You can do this on MSFS. Truly stunning country and well worth a visit. There is one thing the flight sim cannot model and that is adrenaline. If this had been real, it would be overflowing. Thanks again.

Used to live in Kelowna. Awesome place to fly, is where I did a bunch of my float training/teaching. But yeah. 2000 fpm descent from 11000ft, your passengers hate you :P
Incredibly though at 37:45 you can hear ATC clear Harbour Express 312 Northbound 3500' for Downtown Vancouver. Thats my job!

Haha, well I can’t say that I know all that much about the C414, but I figured since the aircraft is pressurised, the “passengers” shouldn’t have minded too much. Perhaps the Chancellor’s pressurisation system can’t keep up with those sort so descent rates though (again, I’m not that familiar with the aircraft)? Either way, this video was definitely more of a demonstration of what “could” be done, rather than what “should” be done ; )

In the descend you should never decrease power by more than 1“ per minute.

Also, I’ve actually never flown anything where you can’t just chop the throttle straight back to idle (should you so wish), so that sort of engine management just doesn’t come naturally to me (I was told off for the same thing with the DC6 the other day haha) - something to think about for a later video perhaps ; )

Yes, the sim is brilliant for this sort of flying (testing your skills and pushing the boundaries etc), ZB! I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of trying to get the C414 from A to B : )

Actually you don't really need to touch the power levers all that much when descending in this aircraft. Basically start your landing descent, reduce the manifold pressure from your cruise setting one inch per minute (to avoid shock cooling the engines) until you reach 27. When you reach your desired altitude and the plane levels off, your IAS should be about 170 knots. At 170 knots you can go for the first notch of flaps (and/or lower the landing gear), reducing the IAS to about 140 knots. The second notch reduces speed some more and then at full flaps the IAS should be at the blue line. All this without touching your power levers after you've reached 27 inches of manifold pressure. You might even need to increase it a bit at this point to stay above the blue line!
This came from a real life Cessna 414 pilot here on TH-cam. I thought it was pretty cool, I tried it and it really did work! Also shows how true to life this great aircraft is in MSFS.

@@IntotheBlueSimulations You Sir are a true aviation master compared to me :-D I'm not a real-world pilot nor have I ever set foot inside anything smaller than an ATR that I can recall. So I really don't know what I'm talking about :) I just wanted to share this technique because I found it really cool and I love that whoever designed the real deal did so intentionally (I assume, it can't be a coincidence). And I love that Flysimware's design mimics the real airplane this well.

Are you gong to cover “new versions” of TBM930, CJ4 and Longitude ? I’m fairly comfortable with CJ4, need to learn Longitude properly. Are there good checklists around ?

I would certainly like to. I’ve actually never flown the Longitude in the sim and I haven’t featured the TMB930 in a video yet (I did record something, but it never made the cut haha). I did have a quick play around with the CJ4 and it seemed to me that the full Working Title mod was still the better option overall (it didn’t appear that the two mods are one and the same, there were no electronic checklists etc).
So yes, I do plan on recording something with the “new” aircraft at some point but as always, it’s a question of finding the time to do so XD

The ATC is real-world recordings, which I’ve then edited into the video. There is actually an ATC chatter app available for MSFS though, if that’s the sort of thing you’re after.

That’s exciting for the PC! I’m actually expecting a new one soon myself also. I certainly don’t miss the days of FSX OOM’s etc, though I did hop back into P3D recently and had forgotten what a great sim that can be (with the likes of the A2A Spitfire etc). People have somewhat mixed results with MSFS, but I can certainly say it’s the most reliable sim platform I’ve ever used - just a handful of CTD’s in 2 years and most of them (if not all) were caused by 3rd party addon issues. MSFS is by no means perfect yet, but it’s a pretty great sim at this point and does do some things exceptionally well - this is indeed all default scenery for example.

what controls are you using to look around the cabin when youre configuring planes? i finally got my tobii5 head tracking working well but it is still nowhere near as smooth as however youre doing it. another excellent production ItB! best msfs creator bar none imho!

I’m a TrackIR user myself. I’ve had a few other comments similar to yours; TrackIR does take quite a bit of tweaking to get things nice and smooth (and even then, it requires some head “discipline” haha), I’m not sure to what degree the Tobii eye tracker can be tweaked also?

The C314 is currently my favorite GA aircraft in the sim. However, with my soon to arrive PC (replacing my Xbox) I'm looking forward to flying the Cessna 310.

The ATC chatter, is simply recordings that I’ve taken from LiveATC.net and then edited into the video, though there is an ATC chatter app available for MSFS (which essentially does the same thing), if you like the effect.

I’m a TrackIR user myself. I hear great things about the Tobii eye tracker; most seem to suggest it’s a good bit of kit and having no wires / IR issues (unlike TrackIR) is a big bonus, though it seems that TrackIR perhaps has a slight edge in terms of smoothness (I’m not quite sure how the two compare in terms of price). I’ve been a TrackIR user for many years at this point and have considered a switch, but “if it ain’t broke” and all that. . .

Cool flight and nice flying. Kinda disappointed with MSFS lately they completely took out icing effects and turbulence toned do so much it’s hardly there.

Icing is still modelled in the sim; the other day, I had the Spitfire MKIX ice up on me before I’d even left the ground haha. Likewise, turbulence is still there, although it does seem to have been toned down. I know there have been some issues with Live Weather of late also. Asobo are always tweaking things and for sure the weather still needs further refinement, but hopefully we’ll get there eventually : )

It is indeed an addon aircraft, the Cessna 414 from Flysimware, to be precise (in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable GA aircraft currently available for the sim).

Hello! Dont know if the questions been answered before but how do I turn on the weather radar? I heard it should work on the plane by default but i couldnt figure out how. Also bought it from the marketplace so maybe an update missing?

I had someone else asking me the same question not too long ago, so perhaps the Marketplace version is pending an update; I’m afraid I don’t have a clever answer for you, or a neat trick etc, I just “turned it on” haha. I set the rotary selector through to WX and that was that. I run the Working Title Garmin mods for what it’s worth, though I don’t believe that should make a difference. . .

Nice landing here. I haven't really flown my 414 much since the Wilga came out but I noticed your 414 doesn't have the weird red turbo glow on each of the engine cowling grates. Did that get removed with an update or did you do something to remove it? I've seen photos of the real glow and by comparison the implementation on this plane always looked really overdone and bad. It didn't detract me though since I've flown this plane a ton.
I’m not sure what he’s using but the red glow is bound to the “beacon light” toggle so you can use the keyboard shortcut to disable it before turning the plane on.

I do also see the same effect on the 414 - perhaps it just wasn’t showing up under the particular lighting conditions in the video. For the longest time I thought it was supposed to be the glow from the beacon or something haha, but I agree, I always thought the effect looked a little odd. Seems like it can In fact be turned off though (from what Michael was saying)!

Hi Alejandro,
You should be able to move around the aircraft using the default cockpit camera controls. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with which bindings would be used on the Xbox - it may be that you have to assign some control bindings yourself (on the PC, one just uses the arrow keys). Anyway, once you have the bindings set up, it's easy to move around the cockpit and indeed into the rear of the aircraft.

I use to do that with a C402 in the Bahamas to Stella Marris or Exuma. But, I knew the highest obstacle was 300 ft if the balloons were down.
That is how the engines sound.

Surly that Climb out rate isn't Correct? 4secs per 100ft?
I’m not 100% sure Chris (not having flown the C414 myself, or gone through the performance tables), but 1,500fpm doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable to me. The aircraft was empty and with only 50% fuel capacity on board + turbocharged engines, cold temperatures etc. I wasn’t that surprised by the climb rate, but I’m not that familiar with the C414’s real-world capabilities.
