    The Dollar Princesses saved many English estates. I did feel sorry for the ones who left living in the lap of luxury at home, and found themselves in cold, drafty manor homes without plumbing, electricity and central heating.

      well, but then Gladys would be taken out of New York and we will never see her -so that won’t happen. I think she won’t really care for Dukey, and there will be a row with her mother because her mother wants the marriage for status.

    I don't know. I like the idea of Gladys as Consuelo. Her character is so endearing and they sure did match Taissa Farmiga's looks to Consuelo. Such beautiful skin and yes she is wispy and willowy. I think it is interesting that they name her character Gladys since I read somewhere that there was another dollar princess named Gladys Vanderbilt that married into Hungarian Royalty. If that doesn't lead us to believe that Gladys Russell will most certainly be a dollar princess, I don't know what does! Not to mention Bertha's intense need to be fully part of High Society. Funny that she divorces her husband and became an advocate for women's rights after all her hard work to get the snobs to accept her. You should do a video on Alva Vanderbilt AFTER the gilded age. Just an idea. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them very much.

      Gladys Vanderbilt[1] was the sister-in-law of "Big Gloria" Vanderbilt[2] Glady's brother was Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt
      (1880--1925) who had married "Big Gloria" in 1923 (the artist Gloria Laura Vanderbilt/Anderson Cooper's mum, was born
      in 1924). Sadly, for Gladys, after 5 children; her husband gambled away her fortune. She returned to the USA and died
      in Newport, R.I. [btw: Gladys was a beautiful woman, check out the picture at the link, below! 😊]
      "Big Gloria" was also the identical twin sister of Thelma Morgan Furness, Viscountess Furness. She was woman who
      assigned Wallis Simpson to "look after her 'little man' (i.e. "David" Windsor, Prince of Wales)[3] while she (Thelma) was
      away from UK. *Wallis certainly rose to the task! ^_^*

    Great Video!! Julian Fellows had already stated that the Gilded Age was originally intended as a prequel to Downtown Abbey to follow Cora's life as she was a dollar princess. Gladys is meant to be a stand in for Cora so yes she will clearly be a dollar princess

      This is exactly what I was thinking about while watching the video!!Gladys it could be a resemblance of Cora or maybe one of her friends could actually be Cora Levinson. Cora was born in 1868, so by TGE season 2 she is 15, too young for the Downton abbey timeline because she married Robert until 1890.

    I feel like Gladys is going to be a mix of Jenny and Consuelo. I think that Bertha ultimately loves Gladys. I think that in the Gilded Age series, Bertha will find a match that will suit both of them. I think Gladys will fall in love with some European royalty that Bertha finds acceptable. Besides, Gladys's father would never allow her to be married to someone who didn't make her happy.

      "To Marry an English Lord" is an excellent jump off book to start researching them. It gives the rules of the British aristocracy, plus the names of many American dollar princesses, some of which did well (Jennie Jerome definitely was one) and others that couldn't cope at all. Many of the dollar princesses have biographies, but you need to actively look for them by their name, which is why "To Marry an English Lord" is so helpful. Consuelo herself wrote an autobiography, but sadly, it was not very illuminating. She edited her own book to the point where it revealed very little. However, I would love to read the unedited and very honest version.

    Consuelo Vanderbilt was not yet 18 when she married Churchill and firmly under her mother's thumb and her father took little to nil interest in her beyond financial support. Gladys's father would never desert her like that, plus Gladys is older as much was made about, she should have been out for some time by Larry in season 1. Women came out at 18, sometimes 17. She is at least her early 20's and no longer needs either parent's permission to marry. the actress that plays her is actually nearly 30.

    She might be a dollar princess but they can’t follow the real story exactly unless they want us to despise Mrs Russell.

      Very perceptive! Just like they didn't follow the exact hsitorical account of the strike for George's character, they will likely modify Glady's experience to keep Bertha likable. Thanks for joining the conversation!

    I just don't understand gladis Russell's mkther, forgot her name sorry. She is shown to be an equal partner in her marriage and has the respect of her husband yet she is raising her daughter to be weak. Nothing more than a pawn in her plans. If she had been as smart as she claims she would have raised her daughter to be just a fierce as herself who would help her future husband.

    • @fabulouswomeninhistory
      @fabulouswomeninhistory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bertha Russell is her mother and I am guessing that as a controlling mother, she is ok with Gladys being what you call weak but I bet we are going to see that change over the course of season 2 and beyond. Thanks for joining the conversation.

  • @Urumi89

    The fact that her father promised she would marry for love is a red herring. My prediction is that he will submit to his wife, who wants her to marry the Duke, now that she discovered he sort of betrayed her. But in this case, she'll be out of the show since I don't think they'll follow the Uk and NY. Maybe they'll have her marry and cancel the matrimony quicker than the 20+ years it took in reality.

    Dollar Princess - Shoppers at the Dollar Store??? 😂

    • @fabulouswomeninhistory
      @fabulouswomeninhistory  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Origin of the term, "Dollar Princes:"The phrase seems to appear frequently as a trope of fiction, such as in Georgina Norway's Tregarthen (1896):[10]
      With Coventry so expensive a man, and Algernon's debts always coming to be paid off, and the girls unmarried, I can assure you that we are awfully poor ourselves. I may tell you, in confidence, strict confidence, that I often dare not send Madame Elise's bills to the earl! But you must must try, my dear. We must look out for an American dollar princess for you. They expect a title, certainly, in general, but we must hope.- wiki

    What kind of dowery do you think they got for Consuelo?

    • @fabulouswomeninhistory
      @fabulouswomeninhistory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it is said that her father agreed to give the groom $2.5 million in shares of stock, and also guaranteed a yearly sum of $100,000 to each half of the coupl

    • @LadySlippers
      @LadySlippers 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      HUGE! Especially compared to what Jennie Jerome brought only 20 years earlier. The early dollar princesses had 'modest' dowries but as time went on, they grew substantially. For example, Consuelo brought in $2.5 million (almost $90 million in today's money) which is why Blenheim is still benefiting from it (they were able to install modern heating and indoor plumbing). Contrast that with Jennie Jerome's dowery of only $250,000, plus a monthly allowance.
