    Ken Ishii is among the oldskool techno masters (R&S records 1992). Extremely talented and a fine list of productions and mixes.

  • @levelminusone
    @levelminusone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    He's a legend, period.
    And not just as a DJ!
    His productions were SO ahead of its time.
    I remember watching and listening to his masterpiece "extra" in 1995 on MTV as a kid - it just blew my mind.

    • @synergydestroyer9700
      @synergydestroyer9700 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I remember his amazing "extra" video on MTV's amp back in 97 when I was 15. He is a legend!

      Talking about albums ahead of their time, I got to know Ken by his album Daybreak Sunrise, what a god, that album is insane!

    A lot of people are completely unaware of the absolutely wonderful japanese techno scene from the late 80s to early/mid 90s and all the amazing acts to come from it.
    Glad to see this set here, makes me want to go through my cd collection right now and listen to an old interferon, mind design, or from time to time cd!
    (ps if you like Ishii's set, his productions are just as good)

    • @raginraven31
      @raginraven31 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly my thoughts.. I remember when Jeff Mills and Dave Clark used to tour Japan almost every other month. Back IN the 90's the Japanese used to be massive techno heads...
      I've only partied once in Japan but I still remember the fluorescent green lol that almost everyone was wearing..

    • @KuldeepJadeja0
      @KuldeepJadeja0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      goemon4 raginraven31 Exactly my thoughts too :D
      Sadly, I assume (I might be wrong too), many modern Techno fans won't know much about Ken Ishii as he is not covered/mentioned/promoted in the media as much as other artists.
      I was going through some old Ken Ishii stuff & came across this & am pleasantly surprised :)

    • @ifoRproductions
      @ifoRproductions 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I missed it because I was too young to even go clubbing at that time, but I most definitely like this type of techno. Thanks for sharing.

    • @raginraven31
      @raginraven31 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ifordefouw No dramas mate, I am now an accountant and my life is boring. But I'm grateful for having been involved in techno's budding years so to speak. Never too late to get into good music.
      As I've gotten older my techno taste has changed, I dont listen to the upbeat stuff anymore. Artists like Rodhad are slightly more appealing!

    • @goemon4
      @goemon4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      ***** I could write up a whole history of the scene in japan, but it is kind of a chore. Just remember, japan had its own Kraftwerks and Jean michel jarres (YMO and Isao Tomita) along with a huge synth scene in the 70s. But when techno came in japan, so did (acid) house and trance in a very big way. It was a very experimental scene, lots of influences (from early prog rock, to early synth experiments in italy/US to the KLF to Telex) and a lot of unique sounds. A lot of which wound up shaping the sound of the amazing video game music in the 90s as well. (Its hard to ignore the strong rotterdam and detroit techno influence in the Namco sound team, not to mention a lot of the techno artists wound up employed by sega and konami)
      That's where Ishii came from, the amazing label Sublime was home to a lot of amazing artists back then and all his early works as Flare. Same with people like Marin (Yoshinori Sunahara) who were starting early techno labels IE Trigger (which became the hugely influential Transonic Records which closed in 2004 and rebirthed in 2007 as ExT Recordings which is still ongoing). Marin ofc gave Trigger away to a young Kazunao Nagata/Organization when Denki Groove formed which is one group which really brought a lot of new sounds to japan. But as did a lot of people, guys like Hiroshi Watanabe/Quadra, DJ Wada/Co-Fu, CMJK/Jun Kitamura (Ex denki groove), the brains behind Denki Groove (as well as techno pioneer) Takkyu Ishino, Fumiya Tanaka, the japanese invasion of Tresor led by DJ Shufflemaster and Chester Beatty (amongst others), Ken Inaoka/Drawing Future Life, groups like Mind Design releasing on Detroit labels in the early 90s, I mean I could sit here and name names all day but I gotta mention Ishino as I feel he gained a lot more popularity in the west than Ishii did. His albums are just phenomenal and I think he still headlines major techno festivals in Germany all the time.
      Granted, the japanese side of things was never a pure techno scene, I don't think it wanted to be confined to one sound, so everyone went off and made their own. It gave rise to completely different musicians though, like Ishii, which I kinda feel sad never got the recognition they deserved. Though I blame the language barrier, others have said sometimes the scene is too out there. But idk, it is all pretty awesome.
      The late 80s/90s electronic scene in japan is one I pretty much spent my life admiring, if you want to follow suit and start from the earlier techno/house/trance roots check out Transonic Records, Frogman Records, Syzygy Records, Sublime and you should find a lot of good starting points. There is a whole world of sound in the east, it mirrors the west in quality and in quantity (with very little bad).

    Had the pleasure to see this hero perform in a little basement club called "Perron" in Rotterdam near the central station for just a few bucks. I was so hyped and delighted, his set was amazing. Alot of skills and energy once he took over from another dj.

  • @simonburgin6642

    This mix is great. Only problem is there's quite a nasty scratchy sound throughout this mix, especially after the 2nd half. Sounds like some digital distortion of some kind.

    • @simonburgin6642
      @simonburgin6642 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i thought that at first but it's over a few different tracks. Sounds like the recording of the set might have got a bit of digital distortion on it.

    • @endeser
      @endeser 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      simon burgin The main vol is too high and it is clipping the input max on the stream. They put up the recording with vol straight from the stream as opposed to from the mixer (with a mic attached set to low so you hear the crowd). The music quality suffers a bit but you get to hear the crowd and, unfortunately it is quite easy to clip the stream without realising.

    • @otherreality
      @otherreality 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well it was originally a Dreamcast game, it still plays better there, and Ken only did 2 tracks for the soundtrack - they're pretty cool ofcourse. Also did tracks for Lumines on PSP, and japanese playstation game LSD. And IIRC also made tracks for Ghost in The Shell both anime and video game
