    My brother-in-law is one of the bosses on that project, and spent the last year or more working on it. He named the name of the man whose responsibility it was to have secured those barges properly, but also says he won't be fired because Skanska needs the insurance money and can't have it look like even the company knows this could have been avoided. It's going to take half a billion dollars and two or three years to rebuild that bridge, not to mention the cost and time to demolish and clear the damage. What a clusterfuck.

    I didn't see all of this damage from the newspaper or on tv. Their is alot of repairs and cleanup to be done. We have been riding across the bridge weekly to see the progress and have enjoyed it ! This is going to take some time to repair. It shows the benefit of accurate storm prediction . Thanks for the tour. Be safe

    As an employee who spent alot of my hard work and time away from my family out on the bay helping build this concrete mega structure in my opinion i feel it's absolutely heart breaking to see all that hard work go down the drain. I hear people talking about the over all integrity of the concrete used to make this bridge and I assure you it gets tested on site multiple times by multiple inspectors from multiple companies before durring and after ever time we pour mud. A bridge was not ment to have massive steal barges slammed into is at hurricane force speeds. So just to clear that up. Actually if you look at the bridge you can see where barges slammed up against the bridge 85% of the way from pensacola to gulf breeze on the Gulf side.... And its only in like 2 places an entire span is missing.... So in reality the concrete faired pretty well .... Snd the bridge did exactly what its designed to do and when it collapsed it did it in sections to prevent the entire thing from falling apart. It's a very sound high quality product that has been produced. The storm did far more damage than anyone could have predicted. Third party company's have been brought in to help complete the work needed to be done to get the repairs completed and the bridge open as soon as possible. People of pensacola should stand behind this company not hate on them . Being one of the largest construction companies in the world they are possibly the only companie that can mobilize the needed goods to get this job done at this point. They have hired 3rd party local company's to help and are doing everything in their power to get the bridge re-opened. Im a pensacola native and in no way do I represent Skanska USA south east division.

      mr brown,youre rite to a point but when you take on project like this dont short cut things like your tug crews,skankas should have the right plan in place for this kind of event an yessir this is hindsight but being around 200ft. barges for 46yrs you respect mother nature,why wasnt the barges taken up escambia river..sounded like a boo boo..

    I live off Avalon and there is absolutely no way to make a left out of my neighborhood now. Someone needs to start directing traffic over here!!!!!! Two years?!?! What are they going to do about the traffic here? When they bring the $5.00 toll back what the hell are we to do???

    • @llshamelessll
      @llshamelessll 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will have to live in a camper in town or your car during the week. Buy a boat? Nothing but crappy answers. Its not just the big cost of the tolls but so much time lost stuck in traffic and the wear/tear of your car too. So many hours just inching along in gridlock. Notice that they are so slow to start the clean up even?
      When the I-10 bridge was down from Ivan, I had to go to work 2 hours early to beat traffic and then I had to kill 2 hours every night before I could go home to minimize gridlock time. This screw up will take even longer to fix. Raise Holy hell with all concerned so that funds for massive overtime and manpower will be brought in to rush this. Skankska needs to contract out the work to 5 companies Id say. If they even try to mention the word profit....HANG them!...lmao

    The weather reporters need to stop hyping storms and then when nothing happens people are unprepared for the next storm because they are not taken seriously.... Or they are not reported properly and then what was supposed to be a minor storm turns into a deadly storm... Michael was the exact same way.... Laura...same thing....

    Heartbreaking. I'm afraid the economic loss for Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach will be extensive. This will likely cause all sorts of delays, including our new house 'under construction' in GB. So sad. Glad no one was hurt.

    What a mess....I lived in Pensacola for few a yrs up until about a year and half ago and I really loved the place. But, one of the factors that came into my decision to move was the potential for a hurricane to blow in. Was working in Perdido Key when just a tropical storm blew in and did some damage. I miss it especially the beach and the ocean...but damn the hurricanes and dealing with their aftermath are just a deal breaker for me.

    Santa Rosa Island is our favorite vacation playground from The Hilton west to Fort Pickens. We drive from Texas each year & were so excited to travel on the new bridge. This just fries my potatoes. You would think, by now, the companies would have learned how to moor a barge for storm surge. Hate this happened.

    • @andrewmurphy8724
      @andrewmurphy8724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the problem is the barges were not moored properly by the company tasked with building the new bridge, and then leaving the barges out in the open bay. The ropes used can only handle so much strain before giving way. The original construction company really did not do a proper job of mooring those barges and are mow hurting because of it.

    I wonder about the over all bridge integrity the way that the concrete seems to just crumble into small pieces looking 1:39 to 2:06 . How much damage was done to the bridge going to Navy base in Bayou Grande? News said a barge blew into the narrow pass into the bayou and hit that bridge wow talk about bad luck for skanska.

    • @shanemedlin9400
      @shanemedlin9400 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bridge was fine, and it wasn't just the barges that did the damage. Those pre-stressed girders that were loaded on the barges did the damage. They're 75 tons each, if memory serves, and there were six on each barge loaded with them. That's a hell of a battering ram.
