Ironically, I saw the third employee of the Cumbres and Toltec this past Monday at my local train club meeting. Full of knowledge and a great guy to talk to. Edit: Wow! I definitely did not expect to get this many likes. Thanks!
The legendary crossing over Stevens Pass with the switch backs, the 2 mile long tunnel, and eventually the 8 mile long tunnel that stands today with the legendary W1 electrics that has both been scrapped. The three attempts are pretty well explained in the short lived extreme trains TV show, and I discovered the W1s through further research.
Colorado is already the scenic railroad capital of US ,but imagine opening up needle eye tunnel rebuild the trestles lay the track from Tolland to Winter Park up and over Rollins Pass , what a ride .
When I was in junior high in Colorado, my library had a book about building the Moffat Road. I was absolutely fascinated with it. Years later I drove both sides of the pass (since you can't go clear through due to the collapse in the Needle tunnel). It was such a treat to see the remnants of the railroad as well as marvel at how insane it was to build over that mountain. If I remember right, I was there in mid June and dealt with a small flurry. Or just really cold rain. Either way, it was hardly feeling summer up there.
I’ve heard of many of the surrounding routes. The Royal Gorge is now a scenic railroad, which I personally think they need a steam engine. Also, on a documentary in the series Extreme Trains, Matt Bown showed the location of the original route and talked about a disaster of two trains being swept down the mountains. Great job on the Vedic look forward to the next one!
Yet another fantastic video! You definitely deserve alot more views, likes and subscribers then you get. The amount of effort that must go into these video's must be insane!!! Keep up the great work man.
Really interesting video. I had no idea that the railroad once run up through Rollins Pass. I drove up there in my truck and its pretty gnarly. It's really neat and fascinating how the Moffat Tunnel Sub comes up from Denver, runs along the side of the mountains on the front range and then cuts in to go further up into the mountains. Not a lot of traffic but really cool to see trains along this route.
Thanks so much for this very interesting video. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to visit that area of Colorado. but, I did know the history of the area. Your video certainly shed a lot more light on it. Thank you.
On a warm summer evening on a train bound for nowhere met with the gambler we were both to tired to sleep we took turns at the window out the darkness the boredom overtook us and he began to speak Kenny Rogers RIP
Nice video! I have a question about a older video, in this video: th-cam.com/video/OtY7iFKKVRE/w-d-xo.html where are the signals at 0:52 from? i cant seem to find them on JR or the DLS.
(Highly unlikely) Alternative ending: the plans for the Denver and Salt Lake fizzle out after Moffat's death in 1911. Meanwhile, the Colorado Midland, the first standard gauge railroad built over Colorado's Continental Divide, somehow finds a way to survive after the 1920s, and Colorado Springs is the most populous city in Colorado.
TBH, that's comparing Apples to Oranges. Scotland has its Highlands, but those molehills don't compare to the Sierras or Rockies and the specific operational challenges that the railroads who built through them had to face.
Finally, a video about Rollins Pass, and a good one at that! I do have a question, what is the Orchestra music played at the end and midway through the video called? Keep up the great content!
Finally someone talked about the most underrated, and scenic stretch of railroad in America, I love my state
CO is incredible
Hey dude
Yes this was an amazing video
I didn't even know about this
I miss my homestate rails we have a steam engine here in Austin, TX that may never operate again.

Jest watching this made the past 3 days of school worth it.
You have school on Sunday?
I have long wanted to model in HO David Moffet's intended route to Salt Lake City via Vernal UT. Thank you for this video!
Great video! Unfortunately, after having logged into my Trainz Italia account, had no luck finding the Rollins Pass Route.
Yeah, hoping to get that cleared up soon.

Vivaldis Four Seasons 4th Movement (Winter)
Poor Vivaldi he wrote dozens of concertos but he’s only remembered for one symphony.
Very informative video! It would be interesting to see an editorial on Great Northern's 2 Cascade tunnel's and electric locomotives.
Some day!

I love the idea
I loved how you use Antonio Vivaldi's 4 seasons Winter Great Edetorial
Personally, I prefer his Violin concerto virtuoso no 315.
Great video as always! Never knew the back and forth that went on for so long on the route! Thanks for sharing!
You bet!

Wasn't that extreme trains episode referring to the Wellington Disaster in Washington?
I guess so. Sorry about that, I get those two areas of the Rockies mixed up sometimes.
@@matthewpowell2429 that would be in the Cascades..*

Video and interesting nice as always , please do more soon!
I actually rode though the royal gorge route at night, it's was stunningly beautiful and amazing to go though
as someone who lives around the area of the Moffat Tunnel, i appreciate this
Interesting. I honestly never heard about this railway. Looks fascinating

Great Documentary! This is just me, but I think a documentary about the history of the Rio Grandes Narrow Gauge System Would Be Neat!

The lesson: keep on going, even if it’s unlikely
Great info it's good to see and know the Moffet is Still used.
I go to winter park all the time, great place, the ski resort has restaurants inside that are train related even, I even saw UP 1995 while skiing!
Great video man. Learned a lot in this story. Thanks for sharing. LJL
Been throught the moffat many times on the California Zephyr! Lots of fun
Nice!
Thanks!
"it was thought impossible". But they FUCKING WENT AND DID IT ANYWAYS!
I love how you used Vivaldi's winter in a winter scene
The music is just great, we really need an ost for your videos
mad informative
Rumor has it that UP might reopen the Tennessee pass.
Interesting 🧐
@High Iron The music is too loud at the end of the video.

Are you going to do a Similar Video with the cascade tunnel?
2:03 That's about $2.4M adjusted for inflation. 🤠
I wonder what the background music is, it's very instresting.
Amtrak and BNSF is the only thing keeping the Moffat sub alive at this moment
request: building the northeast corridor
Someday... ;)
This shows how easier it was to build the railway to Inverness on Caledonian railway

I never knew that Moffat Tunnel was built with government aid. That shows how visionary Colorado leaders were even in the 1920s.
the forum didn't appear for me
you gotta do a video on saluda one day.

I bet Moffat was continually rolling in his grave until they finally built his tunnel.

"Winter," which is part of Vivaldi's Four Seasons composition. This version was obtained from Pond5.
