By Alan Baylock
Item: 00-45080
Series: Premier Jazz
Grade 4
Ensemble: Jazz Ensemble
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
"El Abrazo"" by Alan Baylock is truly stunning chart! The ballad beginning and ending will bring tears to your eyes---it's that beautiful. The chart then moves to a samba around 110 BPM for the half note. Lead trumpet range is to written high C and there is a tenor solo with chord changes. You won't forget this chart! As recorded on Alan Baylocks' CD Prime Time. (7:35)

I can imagine trumpet 1 and bass trombone just playing chess or smthing during the whole song
can confirm
This song was actually made as a tribute to somebody who died, the piano is supposed to be his heartbeat. That's what the note basically says summed up on the inside of the score.
XxContraryLambxX what’s the story
It was a guy that died because of heart defects
c'mon, just 2 more likes.

JuniorSr it has been done
There was more applause from that last low bass trombone note than there was for the solos at our jazz fest
Ricky Minor that note is the best one to hear
i was at a school jazz fest on thursday and the high school jazz ensemble (the best of the best) played this for our middle school band and i (the pianist of my band) got to sit right behind the pianist and watch him play it was so cool
y’all really have to hear the story of this song to understand it fully
whats the story to this I have never heard it

@@theawkwardmexican1299 I believe a highschool student in a jazz band died and Alan Baylock wrote a song in rememberance
@@markjohnson3413 what what? there's "notes to the conductor" at the start of the video, read them.

How descriptive.
Well they aren't wrong
Trumpet 1 is about as useful as a human appendix
4:51 would be lame without it though
@@schloob That doesn't justify the whole piece.. I think it's a poorly utilized part in a bad composition
Well if your lead trumpet just got done screamin to he heavens on the previous chart, this would be an awesome break, especially if the rest of the concert has some heavy lead trumpet playin
Trust me, I've written plenty of high notes. This composition isn't about that, it's about something much more subtle.
@@colinnolan2212 Hey, thanks!
had the honour as an alto sax player to play the solo for this piece last year, we won gold nationally and was one of the best experiences I've had as a saxophonist
Wait you did it as an alto sax... we had a tenor do it
I play the B Bone... Man is it fun! Those pedal G's and Ab's. And that pedal Bb in the begining is just good.

LOVE THIS. The ending was copy-pasted and I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity to not have that motif overlap over itself at the very end so the final chord could be this cool held-out thing with lots of voices, but I love the layering of the instruments when the groove comes in, and that sax solo was so good
The notes explain why the ending is the same as the beginning
Why does this sound like Wii Sports?
cynthia toum I know wtf I was thinking the same thing
Same
Because Nintendo actually makes some great jazz tunes for their games :)

I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING😭😭
bass trombone plays like 20 notes total and almost all of them are just the double bass part. rip
Nah thats fine. This would be a good song after a aggressive piece like torque or moanin. Gives bass bone and trumpet 1 a break
They sound really dope thoughh
It’s all about the colour!
Playing this in high school as a 2nd alto, I’ve always hated slow songs but this one took my heart away
'took my heart away' bro...
Finally another part with a Bass Trombone part that goes lower than Bari Sax
I want this played at my funeral.
Herr Joe Did you read the directors notes at the beginning?
@@zestra123 no why?
@@aabatteries1741 its a tribute to someone who died
When the tenor sax solo is by a 16 year old chad LB 😂😂 but great song/arrangement and a good solo.
This is Chad?
@@robertorabello1050 no lol it does sound like a young Chad though.
@@matthewstevenson7452 oh yes.
Played kit for this in my high school jazz ensemble and had an amazing time! One of my favorites from the year
@alfredmusicjazz is there any chance to aquire the transcript of the tenor solo?
4:34
The first part would be a really good opener with some SCV 2016 kind of writing after the slow part
This could maybe fit in somewhere during the ballad. Or after, as a transition of some kind...
Got to watch this live! AMAZING SONG! Better in person!
I saw two high school bands play this one after the other at a music festival.
Great chart. Epic.
I don’t know about that A section again at the ending...
Read the concert notes
Recommend this song to my band director I really hope he gets it. It's s very high possibility because we need a Latin, balet and swing charts for the concert and this is like all 3 in one. He also loves the arranger of this song. And he knows the meaning to this song so fingers crossed 🤞

Sounds like Samsung wth
Beautifully written piece and when I heard the story behind it this instantly became even more beautiful!❤️ Thank you Alan Baylock for creating this unique piece
Wow...that tenor solo was hip!!!
Can this be considered a ballad?
The beginning is a ballad, but then it goes into samba and swing, so I don't think the full piece would be considered a ballad.
thanks for the upload. We are doing this one in jazz class.
Yes we are!!! We're gonna be awesome!
We are always awesome.
I’m more of a st Thomas man myself
I'm more of a Cheesecake guy
ITS LIKE PROGRESSIVE JAZZ!!! I LOVE IT!
I’ve put the title into Google Translate and what came out was the word _Hug_
Playing this song hits differently

Sounds like a Jacob Collier Song ❤️
this is the first song i played when i met my first love, and the final song that i played in hopes of her changing her decision but her ultimately breaking up with me
Great swing and demanding intro.
I really gotta transcribe that tenor solo. Incredible
Amazing! 👏👏❤

Who is playing that monster tenor solo?
This song is my Ultimate Jam
Omg I love this song (hi rodri)

@@venteach.6289 there’s a gag where my friend will look at songs we played in jazz band and I’ll comment something like this and he’ll laugh lol

Great song honestly
what scales is the tenor soloist using to sound so out throughout his solo ?
Chromatic
Both forms of diminished, Dorian in the minor sections, and lydian in the major sections of the form, and their patterns in and out of it. Hope this helps.

Got a few Metheny vibes, but overall I don’t really like it. Feels too “basic”
Life can be simple, too.
Alan Baylock Oh wow this is an old comment, the chart has definitely grown on me since then lol. I adore the use of contrasting styles! Great bassline, too.
