I never tire of hearing these two sing this duet. Domingo simply cannot help feeling the character and letting it show. I love that about him. Agnes' shout-scream made me spill my wine! Bravi!
I would do anything if i could be a contemporary of them. No they are still shining in the world where i'm living..but i mean, I really want to exist as a person in those amazing times of Agnes Baltsa, Jose Carreras, and Placido Domingo. Damn i was born too late... Now that Agnes was born in 1944 and I was born in 1994, there's 50-years gap between me and her.
This is also very rare. Agnes sang very rarely with La Scala, only as Carmen and as Romeo. The Carmen in Milan was double cast, Domingo sang with Verret and Carreras sang with Baltsa. This was the only performane in Milan that Baltsa sang with Domingo.
This is what opera is all about! Where do you find a Carmen with fire & passion who understands how to interpret this character. She knows she is about to die and I feel that Baltsa really brings this over. She is fearless and spits outs these phrases with increasing abandon. Listen to her building up the tension between her spitting out 'Jamais!' at 01:58 to her 'Tiens!!' at 08:36. Wow! Also, Domingo is pretty damn fantastic too; secure in his singing and a great partner to Baltsa. Brava!!
