You don’t put the lid on straight away? We have caught a few swarms this season already and in the instances where we could shake them from a tree we popped the lid on as quick as we could. I would’ve thought they’d be more likely to abscond if the lid was left off. Awesome video by the way, thanks for sharing.
Hi Rob. Thanks for the feedback. All swarms are different and mostly yes we put the lid on as soon as we can but this was a huge swarm and all the signs were there that the queen was inside with 95% of her swarm. Unless the box has a problem like it's too small or there is insuffecient ventilation in there, the bees will not obscond. They are keen to find shelter just like most creatures. So giving them a safe home that they can build their stores and defend easy enough is all that usually needed for them to go in and stay. We always ensure the ventilation is good because swarms can easily overheat and die overnight if locked in a space too small.
