The Truth About Stalin's Prison Camps

  • Vera Golobeva spent more than six years in one of Stalin’s Gulag camps. Her crime? “To this day, I still don’t know,” she says. In a new documentary, Golobeva remembers the excruciating details of her imprisonment. When she was arrested, along with her father, mother, and sister, Golobeva was taken to KGB headquarters and tortured. She was eight months pregnant. “I felt as if they were burying me alive,” she says in the film. The worst was yet to come.
    Between 1918 and 1987, Soviet Russia operated a vast network of hundreds of prison camps that held up to 10,000 people each. When Stalin launched his infamous purges in 1936, millions of so-called political prisoners were arrested and transported to the Gulag without trial. The first wave of prisoners were military or government officials; later, ordinary citizens-especially intellectuals, doctors, writers, artists, and scientists-were arrested ex nihilo. At the camps, many prisoners were executed or died from overwork and malnutrition. The death rate often hovered around 5 percent, although in years of widespread famine, mortality could be as high as 25 percent. Historians estimate that as part of the Gulag, Soviet authorities imprisoned or executed around 25 million people. Read more: www.theatlanti...

      You probably would have supported the Nazis too if you had lived under Stalin. There were a lot of people in that time who supported Hitler for no other reason than that they wanted someone to stand up to Stalin. It's the reason Finland joined Hitler's side during the war with the Soviets during WWII.
      Just because the Nazis were evil doesn't prove that the Soviets weren't. Evil has fought evil all throughout history and this conflict was no exception.

      Somehow I doubt that a three-volume series of 700-page books with eloquent language and lots of descriptions into life in the Gulags was all faked. If I were a liar trying to discredit my country, I probably wouldn't have been able to come up with enough content to fill that many pages.
      It is true that a lot of his guesses were incorrect, after all, he was just a prisoner in the system. It's not like he had access to the government's records.
      But people still see his work as a personal memoir if not a historically accurate representation of the USSR. The Gulag Archipelago is a valuable look into the nightmares of Stalin's reign, just as the personal accounts of Hitler's concentration camps were. Solzhenitsyn was a great hero and it's well-documented online from many different sources. The idea that he was a liar and a cheat is little more than a conspiracy theory.
      Seriously, read up on him and read his books for yourself before you judge. You'll find it to be an incredibly enlightening experience.

That her child died, probably owing to incompetence on the part of the people on duty. I worked in the Peace Corps in a post Soviet Central Asian country. Some of my colleagues talked of the deportations, no one ever talked about gulags though Central Asia had many gulags. Many of my colleagues spoke of themselves or family members being deported from somewhere else to there and indigenous people spoke of family members deported to another region and loss of contact. The reasons I heard people gave for deportation and disappearance cases included complaints by jealous co-workers and neighbors, alleged insults against the state, and men desiring other people's wives would then cause the disappearance of their husbands. From other sources, though, I've heard that companies wanted cheap or free labour, and the government used any pretext to grab people and send them to work in camps.

    We need the sober reminder that all men are capable of committing the most terrible evils imaginable. All men no matter how high, no matter how strong and pious can be brought low and damned by his own quiet unawakened darkness. We should never destroy history good or bad. Never think that erasing the past purges its evil from our future. The evils of the past should be canvased and framed on walls; solidified in statues as ghosts to haunt us. To condemn us. To be signs of places we should never go. As mirrors that show us who we really are. Unblinded! But to be at the same time a hope for good and a hope for salvation.

      It wasn't paranoia, but knowing the evil of central planning, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, communism, socialism and anything else that puts others in power over you. Liberty and equal protection work wonders as proven since the greatest expansion of population, wealth, education, health and lifespans since The Enlightenment. What's wise is for the youth to no pretend they know better how to deal with humans than all of history's actual efforts. They are lucky to have the best world that's ever existed, despite it's problems that are real, but pale in comparison to the past.

      Vinny it’s funny because the 50 poorest countries in the world are all capitalist. None of them recognize socialism/communism in their constitution. North Korea and Cuba are able to have free healthcare yet there countries have been heavily affected by America sanctions

    • @vinny5638
      @vinny5638 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@evano5635 How is that funny? And how is it relevant? Most sane Americans agree that an upgrade to our healthcare system is necessary. You arent saying anything new, and the north Korean bit is an obfuscation of the facts. The North Korean population literally get hydrazine fuel dropped on them from the ever consistent missile tests they do, poisoning villages and genetically defecting generations of people. You can literally look up videos of the leaking refuse from missile shells being lodged 20 meters away from villages where people sleep, eat and live. But sure, "FREE HEALTHCARE" am i right? Youre absurd.
      More-over, the poor state of Americas healthcare doesn't justify a divorcement from the entire system of capitalism. Thats throwing the baby out with the bath-water. Youre in over your head buddy, because your arguments are weak & were clearly only written because you felt a certain way about my "tankie" comment. So why do you support communism?
      Lets see if you can produce an answer without irrelevant anti-capitalist jabs, lay out your philosophy for me.

    • @evano5635
      @evano5635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vinny North Korea is the most sanctioned country in the world. What economic incentive does it get from killing its people. Like ask yourself this. Because basic things like medication isn’t even alllowed into the country because of its sanctions. So why should Kim be constantly killing his people when you actually need people to maintain your country. North Korea struggles towards sovereignty stems from America destroying the country.

    • @evano5635
      @evano5635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vinny I support communism because capitalism is destroying my home country in Africa. Because of the dangerous effects of capitalism my family had to immigrate to western countries and they were rich too. So many immigrants experience this. So here is my argument on the validity of communism. ..... first let’s remember that Americans Europe built their countries capital and wealth through the use of colonialism and imperialism and slavery. Remember such systems practiced the economic principles of capitalism. However Russia did not own any colony or practice any form of imperialism. During the time America and it’s like we’re exceeding Russia was struggling as a country because the majority of its people were living in poverty and had no education. Yet with communism it removed the rate of poverty, created innovate Industry, and improve the country literacy rate. Hell the ussr had its own space program and the country was extremely poor. And if you talk about there is no innovative under communism the ussr invented laser eye surgery and so many more cool things. Why not set up the economy in a way that better the life’s of a community instead of the life of an individual. Why must we encourage a system that brings out the worst in human. Am sorry for being rude am just angry. One thing I wanna point out is that the reason that you see such a bias one side view of communism is because of America Cold War capitalist propaganda.

    • @vinny5638
      @vinny5638 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evano5635 Hey man thats an awesome response no worries at all this is an important discussion so a certain amount of passion is expected!
      I know that I have to recognize the glaring mistakes of capitalism, in that through our imperialism and slavery we've destroyed countless lives in order to further our own progress. I agree that such moral-less, cut-throat evil is unacceptable. I think that in these discussions, I've noticed a pattern that goes as follows:
      My side focuses on the worst mistakes of communism in order to posture it as an evil system, and your side focuses on the worst mistakes of capitalism in order to posture it as an evil system. But you've just laid out numerous very positive examples of communism that I would be ignorant to disregard. So obviously communism can be a very progressive system under the correct conditions, right?
      Well, are there not similar positive elements of capitalism that shouldn't be reduced to our grave misuses of imperialism and slavery? Like global trade networks etc? I agree that a certain amount of my support for capitalism & distaste for communism definitely is affected by propaganda, in that I support capitalism because I was born into it and have been given fairly decent chances at improving my life based on this system I was born into. I'm even willing to admit that I dont know enough about the inner workings of communism to say that its entirely bad. But Im sure you also accept that there have been human atrocities and grave mistakes at the hands of communism as well, right?
      Bare with me for a moment, I wonder if the way forward is for me to admit that capitalists dont always get it right, and for you to admit that communists dont always get it right, and for us to begin learning from the strongest parts of each others systems instead of completely disregarding them? Isn't it a fact that capitalist economies are usually quite strong? Even China and Russia have adopted capitalistic economic frameworks & capitalism has opened up a global trade network, aren't those good elements of capitalism? We could probably make a lot of progress if we tried to forge a path forward, together instead of at odds with each other.
      but..... I can see how that's hard, because you've PERSONALLY been affected negatively by capitalism where as I have never been affected negatively by communism. So maybe im being childish in assuming we can accept elements of each others ideas. I dont know. Let me know what you think?
