Collective self-respect is what is lacking and if you truly respect yourself you would not allow yourself to be mistreated by foreigners in your own country.
That is why this Chinese man felt so comfortable dismissing you because he probably has done this before to other black people and they have been far too passive and polite to stand up for themselves.
