Arrowhead Games simply does not miss. From Magicka to the first Helldivers to this masterpiece, I have never played a game by them that has failed to captivate me and create unforgettable memories with the fellas.
Yes they brought hub-like openworld and extraction element on a co-op horde shooter and reinvigorated the formula since it was has been linear, and still HD2 has AI director, that's limitless replayability. What a successor.
I like the fact that rubix actually did the sponsorship in game rather than cut to a permanent inserted short. It's a lot more enjoyable to listen to while you hear and see the shadow of doom approach.😊
I feel like that bit worked so well because I can absolutely see Helldivers being used for sponsored segments, so the idea of one trying to survive while doing a mandated ad read is just hilarious already
Forgot to mention, every NPC on the ship has a different name for each person's ship. The Democracy Officer by the strategy/planet map has different scars or even an eyepatch. If the host is on the strategy table all the other players can actually interact with it and watch (though Rubix did point out that you don't have to because you can still see what the host is selecting) and even the Democracy Officer has a place at the table though he doesn't use it.

I think my personal favorite small detail is with the flamethrower. The pilot flame at the muzzle doesn't start ignited, and pulling the trigger for the first time emits a small puff of un-ignited fuel - then the pilot light sparks to life, and you get the stream of flame you're expecting. But what's even better is that the pilot flame stays alight for a while, but will eventually go out after a period of time not spent firing, and this actually affects the time it takes to start throwing flame! You can start firing immediately as long as you can physically see the flame at the tip of the muzzle, but if there's no pilot flame, you'll need to relight it.
im glad you pointed out you CAN get the premium currency in the game a lot of youtubers fail to mention this and i think its very important that people realize that buying the currency is only if you wish to support the game and devs past buying the game its self
Also, it's worth noting that the Currency itself isn't even that expensive. After seeing it in other live service games, one would expect ridiculous prices - but no, they are actually quite low.
Yea the currency was generous and accessible as in attainable each match. it's criminal in terms of live service standard how the game doesn't even felt like it, even grind felt like a casual character progression of WWZ and DRG
@@SL4PSH0CK are you saying the grind is to long? took me like 50 hours to unlock the final gun in the free pass thats not very long i dont even understand how the low currency price ontop of the free currency you can find has anything todo with the live service set up they have when the first game was also live service and the company is very open and honest about the problems its having and how they fix them
@@D9fjg my reading comprehension is fine thats why i asked if they consider the grind to long the word 'casual' could mean legit anything from playing like 1 game a day to only running low difficulty missions for fun with friends
Special attention goes to Hellmire, which starts off at night, but partway into missions the sun comes up, and the battlefield becomes foggy as hell lit up in a red glow that makes it look like you are genuinely in hell.
If you start a mission thats close to sunrise that will happen. Its such a cool feature that there are actual day/night cycles instead of just choosing night or day for the mission. I had a mission where the sun was setting on a hot evac and it was insane
Yup, where you start decides your day/night cycle. You can see the cycle clearly when you spin the Holo-Globe a bit - somewhat letting you decide at which wheather you wanna go (If there's Missions to start or to join in your preferred time zone, close to morning or to a night).
Pat (PatStaresAt), co-hosting the podcast Super Castle Beast, mentioned that you'd think those Super Destroyers you see outside your command deck or above your mission aren't real... except that during the recent server issues, he managed to play the game when nobody else could get in and THEY WERE ALL GONE.
@@Justalilcyn Yeah, most likely a "If there's between 200 and 300 players load this many ships, if there's up to 1000 load some more" and so on. I doubt each individual ship is an individual person but they definitely scale with how many people are around.
Thats still really cool. You dont see games do that anymore. It makes the game feel like if the players give up our forces are gone and thus we lose. Thats a cool feeling to get from a game.
@@Justalilcynwell the fact that most of the customizations are on the inside. But yeah. Every ship that explodes is a team that lost. Every time a ship shoots you can see it. When you are loading in you can see other teams also drop in. And see how many are actually in each team. That's most of the server issues were. the game wasn't coded to handle so many players because all of those details were real time.
7:50 - I believe it's confirmed that the 'other' ships are representative of the other players. When the servers crapped out, all those ships went away, and if another super destroyer in orbit is using a laser or whatever, it's because a player called it in. Maybe it's not literally the very second another player called it in, and of course it's not loading those other team's full games or whatever, but it appears because some other player called it in.
The actual ships are just decorative, with random stratagems and other stuff going off. The total NUMBER of ships is based on how many people are actually on that planet. So while you don't see actual people, they are based on people
Honestly, I would love just a whole video of you talking about little touches in Helldivers. Many of them I’ve noticed myself, but there’s so many it’s impossible to see them all, it’s so grwat
Not sure if it's just a particular planet but there's a world I played on recently where majority of the missions had unexploded mini nukes littered all over the damn place. We set off 3 of these in various missions by accident - and a ton more on purpose - resulting in catastrophic Helldiver losses.... and hilarious ragdolls. The extractions is one of my FAVORITE parts of the game simply because of how stress inducing they become. They aren't too hard, they aren't too easy, and they're NOT in the middle - they can be in the middle, they can go to either extreme, it all depends on something I have yet to figure out now and the mystery of that problem is what causes them to be the fun kind of stressful. Because there's the relief some times when it's too easy and you're like "ah yes, pop a ccld one while we watch the bugs disintegrate in the face of 4 auto turrets." - but if they're harder you get the "Yah, I figured - I was prepared for this though" kind of mentallity, you grit your teeth and you have fun either way. Its definitely worth the buy, and is one of those games you'll be craving when you're at work or school and can't wait to get home to play it.
I really hope we get a ton of lore for Super Earth -- every tiny piece they put out is incredibly tightly written yet thoroughly comedic, while also being fairly believable and fully in-tune with the suspension of disbelief you gave at the start of the premise.
I know you said this was your first video essay, and I'm sure this took some serious time and effort. But man alive, you have a talent for this format. I was hooked from start to end.
Wow, was not expecting to hear Julia Ecklar in a Helldiver video, had to pause the video to make sure I was hearing that right, and I love it. Love your content and everything you do!
Okay this video got me to actually check the HUD settings and disable everything possible and now it is so much more fun trying to coordinate where everyone is
I love this video style for you since I know I can trust your experiences seeing how you and Ignis have been diving into hell in every operation of arma.
For your first essay, this is hands down my favorite review/look at the game. It felt unique and covered topics that other reviewers did not. It felt fair and full of passion! Thank you sir!
As far as Gameguard / DRM thing, good news There's thread on Steam's discusion forums talking about that stuff, and apparently dev's current stance is to work out how to replace it AFTER they deal with currently biggest fire that is servers choking and bursting in to flames from people trying to constantly play the game.
I love the small touch of you adding in Leslie Fish in the background, I recognized it cause you mentioned filk in one of your videos and I went to check it out and saw I had actually listened to her stuff before but forgot about it. But I went back and listened to her again and I love her music so much, thank you for reminding me of such a great artist and genre of music.
I still love so much of the small details. When reloading the revolver, if you had to cut your reload short, it won't magically produce more bullet casings. Only downside is that it still doesn't matter; your diver will still go through the motion anyway (though it makes sense if you shot a few rounds.) The pump shotties (Punisher and Slugger) both have visible loading tubes where the shells sit. As you fire, they'll empty out, and will refill as you reload them too. Attempting to shoot your weapon mid-reload if it has a bullet left over will let you shoot that bullet in the chamber! Sometimes, when pulling out the revolver, your character will flip it and it's really neat. Also, when it comes to your armor being dirtied and cleaned off, blood and dirt/mud get washed off in water/rain, but oil stays. Bonus; if you're using a jetpack or you get set on fire, your cape gets singed, and I think it also gets ripped if you take damage in the back too. When treading through deep snow, following a fellow diver's tracks reduce the slowdown as they've already made a path themselves. Also, just as an added bonus for the machineguns, the bullet casings do stay for a while, so firing your whole magazine will have a lot of shell casings on the ground by the end of it.
This is definitely a different video than what I'm used to watching here, but I love when you talk so passionately about game you love, showing us all the aspects we might've not known ourselves.
Honest to God love your videos, and I do my best 'not' to skip the in video ad segment, and seeing you run around attempting to read the script whilst not dying sealed me from skipping ahead. Love your stuff man. Glad to see you enjoying Helldivers and hopefully one day Ill run into you in game o7
Your passion for the game and general personality made this a gem to watch. It felt similar pacing to your other videos while also explaining something and being entertaining. This was a banger, jay! FOR SUPER EARTH
9:25 One cool thing that I realized yesterday while playing a very hard mission with friends on hellmire, is that your cape can get torn appart. I don’t know what does this, the only thing I know is that we survived countless injuries and fire tornadoes so that might be it. Regardless, as you said, a fuck ton of details and that rules.
8:32 I’d watch an hour long video of just these small details. Each one is a delight to hear about. This game seems like a relatively simple concept executed to the absolute greatest level of detail and finesse Arrowhead could muster, which is an excellent approach for indie games, and has been executed perfectly.
This game feels like when there was a long dark age, and then the Hero comes, and brings about a Golden Age. We've had so many horrible games that have made many people feel like games are dying out. But games like this remind me that there's hope. Even in the Grimdarkness of the 2020s, there is Hope.
I just want to point out after watching the environment praise at 13:08 that this game came out not even 4 months after Starfield and without the colossal Bethesda budget Arrowhead managed to make a world tile generation with points of interest scattered around that feels varied, bautiful to watch and with great environmental effects, interactions, landmarks and storytelling that doesn't feel like a wasteland with copy and pasted assets. Just let that sink in
Im willing to bet the shovel is an ongoing meme do to it coming in handy, likely in some harrowing situation, involving a table-top game the team was playing during development. Imagine the legend of the shovel? Legend writes itself. I love this lore.
I played a few good matches on SUICIDE MISSION difficulty today with some randoms. Eventually there was only 2 of us left when we got back to the ship. We said GG, gave eachother a hug, and went our seperate ways. Was the saddest and happiest ive been playing a game for a long time. Godspeed brother!
One small thing about this game I noticed is that the skybox is based on where on the planet you are. With a ringed planet, you’ll see more or less of the ring depending on your latitude, and moons will only be able to be seen from one side of the planet
Your enthusiasm, the production value, theming and the amazing showcase of everything you had to talk about all came together so well. This actually has to be one of my favourite game review/overview videos that I've seen in ages. Amazing propaganda too, you've gone and convinced me to play it haha!
7:50 No those are actually real players. They did not need to add that but they did. It was figured out when a bug happened and only a handful of people could login. There was a lot less ships in orbit or in the sky.
The gunplay is super satisfying and *actually* punishes you for firing on the move, as well as making common dumb-looking videogame tactics like "strafe spamming" far more difficult, which encourages you to take a knee or go prone for maximum accuracy. Also the Control scheme customisation is the best I've ever seen in any game ever. The fact you can bind *every* function, even down to what moves the camera (it doesn't have to be the mouse), and you can choose whether it's a press, long press, tap, double tap, or a couple of other options, means you can bind multiple functions to the same keys if need be. I wish more games had control remapping as good as HDII. Oh, also. The soundtrack is PHENOMINAL. It's soo invigorating and triumphant. I love it.
my favorite over-the-top lore bit is that for one of the cape types, a group of schoolchildren sing the super earth anthem to each one of them before being distributed into a helldiver
Jay I just want to take the time to say that for a video game youtuber you talked about the sponsor in the best way possible. Stayed entertained while being informed.
Really little gameplay thing I love is the AK-style reloads on a lot off weapons, where your left hand reaches under the weapon to grab the charging handle.
If us super citizens/hell jumpers can join sometime, this may be the greatest game so far this year. I definitely think your mention of invite only lobbies is also important. Melee may actually be a thing in the works.
funny thing about the "you can land stratagems on enemies" thing is from what I've seen only hellpod type stratagems track the target, all others look like they're tracking (orbitals, eagles ect) but will still land where you initially hit the stratagem, so use stuff like sentries, emplacements, support weapons/backpacks and resupplies if you want a tanky target dead in a pinch and can stick it onto that enemy, chargers and annihilator tanks are the easiest in my experience since they both have front facing armor thats very easy to stick stratagems to, bile titans and hulks are harder cause of their taller slimmer profile, but if you've got a good throwing arm I'm sure you can stick a resupply to a titan
22:32 it’s not obvious or anything but there actually is a way to make your lobby private by going into settings, it’s been nice for getting friends in now that matchmaking actually works
My gods, every time I hear Filk in the wild its crazy, because next to no one seems to know about it. I only discovered it thanks to Rimmy. Everyman and Hope Eyrie are bangers, fantastic taste Rubix.
Fantastic video and I definitely share nearly all of those points. Honestly I'd love a video on just all those small details. As an aside, my very first mission was a Trivial Defense against the bots. I figured it would be a nice way to get used to the game. I drowned in a tidal wave-esque assembly line of metal, oil and hatred for 12 minutes before extracting with zero reinforcements, 3 magazines for a single weapon, under half health and at 13 of 30 scientists saved. Space Vietnam gave me PTSD enough that it was a long time before I left the bug theatre or war.
My main personal hope is a weapon upgrade system, just something similar to the first game where they're straight upgrades, like bayonet or bigger magazines.

The grenades have an arming distance and that distance is sometimes the space between me and the Hulk. Kinda like kicking a ball at a wall at a close range and having it come back and hit you in the face
I think it’s more of an arming time, than a distance traveled but I also don’t know any actual facts about it
That’s the most common one actually, play any call of duty
Same goes with the stupid armoured rhinos 🤣
Arming distance is a thing for IRL 40mmm grenades so I do like that detail.
Arrowhead Games simply does not miss.
From Magicka to the first Helldivers to this masterpiece, I have never played a game by them that has failed to captivate me and create unforgettable memories with the fellas.
You can say they always go for the headshot
Arrowhead always lands on target.
Yes they brought hub-like openworld and extraction element on a co-op horde shooter and reinvigorated the formula since it was has been linear, and still HD2 has AI director, that's limitless replayability. What a successor.
They have something that's getting rarer now:
True passion
I like the fact that rubix actually did the sponsorship in game rather than cut to a permanent inserted short. It's a lot more enjoyable to listen to while you hear and see the shadow of doom approach.😊
Made only better by the context that he is advertising a genital trimmer 😂
I feel like that bit worked so well because I can absolutely see Helldivers being used for sponsored segments, so the idea of one trying to survive while doing a mandated ad read is just hilarious already
Forgot to mention, every NPC on the ship has a different name for each person's ship. The Democracy Officer by the strategy/planet map has different scars or even an eyepatch. If the host is on the strategy table all the other players can actually interact with it and watch (though Rubix did point out that you don't have to because you can still see what the host is selecting) and even the Democracy Officer has a place at the table though he doesn't use it.
My democracy officer is called Chandler, my friend's one is called Jaeger
@@offsetcircle1903
Mine is literally just Joshua.
My friend ended up with Frank...
Yesterday we kept joking around with the orbital strikes and kept yelling "FRANK, DROP THE NUKE."
My shipmaster's name is Ayre. Maybe I really am C4-621
It is time for the Rubixraptor to become a video essay man like Soviet Womble
With the same kind of face reveal jumpscare!
It is the cycle of TH-cam, nature is healing :)
As long as he uploads more than once a year.🤣
I'd say it's more like Therussianbadger in my opinion
Soviet Womble still makes videos?
:P
Knowing Arrowhead has a thing for shovels makes the gravedigger you can find on maps make alot more sense. he always has a dead enemy close by with a shovel in their head
@@SL4PSH0CK are you saying the grind is to long? took me like 50 hours to unlock the final gun in the free pass thats not very long i dont even understand how the low currency price ontop of the free currency you can find has anything todo with the live service set up they have when the first game was also live service and the company is very open and honest about the problems its having and how they fix them
@@LetsMakeNoSense
You must have bad reading comprehension, they said *_Casual_*
I hope Helldivers 2's soundtrack wins some award. Has such nostalgic vibes of passion and composure
Is shot out of a super destroyer. WITH A BACKING TRACK FOR SUPER EARTH!!
Never heard the in-game music beyond the menu, I always have 'Nam music blaring in the background
Same with the fan-songs like "we all are Helldivers"
Pat (PatStaresAt), co-hosting the podcast Super Castle Beast, mentioned that you'd think those Super Destroyers you see outside your command deck or above your mission aren't real... except that during the recent server issues, he managed to play the game when nobody else could get in and THEY WERE ALL GONE.
They probably represent how many people r on the planet but I doubt each one is an individual players actual customized ship
@@Justalilcyn Yeah, most likely a "If there's between 200 and 300 players load this many ships, if there's up to 1000 load some more" and so on. I doubt each individual ship is an individual person but they definitely scale with how many people are around.
Yea like back HD1 it an interpretation of the most visited planet@@Justalilcyn
So while you don't see actual people, they are based on people
12:19 "and it is fucking fun"
*howling in Irish Catholic* AAAAAAAMMMEEEENNNN
edit: the lack of Hellsing Ultimate Abridged references is disturbing
Nice one!
Amen inded brother
“The automatons are crusading…while the terminids are invading!”
*get ready to die starts blasting*
I love how you can actually feel his joy from doing this. He doesnt do it often but man when he does...... Keep it up rubix. Tails must be containted.
Honestly, I would love just a whole video of you talking about little touches in Helldivers. Many of them I’ve noticed myself, but there’s so many it’s impossible to see them all, it’s so grwat
4:13 Not far from "Klen Dath II" you can also find the planet "Zegema Paradise" Another not-so-subtle reference to Starship Troopers ! :)
>Minus Ten and Counting 11 - Hope Eyrie at Part 5
Thank you so much for using this, this kind of music never gets the praise it deserves.
I was so thrilled when I heard Hope Eyrie! I found Filk a few years ago and it’s truly amazing to see that it hasn’t been forgotten.
Bro, the transitions between landscapes starting at 12:50 that maintain your character as you cut between them is *insane*
Is this the intro song 2:30 that sounds like something from Joan Baez? If yes, thanks for pointing out her name.
Okay this video got me to actually check the HUD settings and disable everything possible and now it is so much more fun trying to coordinate where everyone is
I love this video style for you since I know I can trust your experiences seeing how you and Ignis have been diving into hell in every operation of arma.
The terrains are gorgeous. Hellmire, with its hellscape and fire-nados, is top-notch.
Fighting skynet on forest planets is unreal.
So much fun.
Teamwork is very important, it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at
One teammate running bait for hulks while i shoot them in the back has been the easiest way to kill them other than stratagems
The Everyman song made me smile, such and underappreciated piece of music, good job Jay, nice one
For your first essay, this is hands down my favorite review/look at the game. It felt unique and covered topics that other reviewers did not. It felt fair and full of passion! Thank you sir!
As far as Gameguard / DRM thing, good news
There's thread on Steam's discusion forums talking about that stuff, and apparently dev's current stance is to work out how to replace it AFTER they deal with currently biggest fire that is servers choking and bursting in to flames from people trying to constantly play the game.
they gave us the constitution rifle yesterday and yes, it comes with a bayonet :)
Only downside is that it still doesn't matter; your diver will still go through the motion anyway (though it makes sense if you shot a few rounds.)
The pump shotties (Punisher and Slugger) both have visible loading tubes where the shells sit.
One thing that never fails to please me is how literally every other moment within this game feels straight out of an action movie
15:14 the yogurt armor if I'm not mistaken is a pre-order exclusive, half right that everyone has it *(I think they could have changed it)*
You can hear him smiling through this video! It's amazing
its so nice to hear rubix so happy and excited for this game ,i can really hear the happiness from his voice
This was a phenomenal video. I hope to see more video essays in the future!
HOPE EYRIE AS WELL? AHHHHH. Man, I've followed you for a bit, but including Julia Ecklar and Leslie Fish's music has made you 1000% cooler.
Your passion for the game and general personality made this a gem to watch. It felt similar pacing to your other videos while also explaining something and being entertaining. This was a banger, jay! FOR SUPER EARTH
9:25
One cool thing that I realized yesterday while playing a very hard mission with friends on hellmire, is that your cape can get torn appart. I don’t know what does this, the only thing I know is that we survived countless injuries and fire tornadoes so that might be it. Regardless, as you said, a fuck ton of details and that rules.
RubixRaptor video essays something I never knew I needed so much until now
I was gonna skip the sponsor bit, but doing it in the middle of a run changed my mind.
I love your use of Filk music so much! It’s great to know it’s still around and being enjoyed.
Just let that sink in
I knocked my friend down with the back blast from my recoilless rifle during a defend mission. I love this game
You did a great job on this video essay and look forward to the possibility of you making more!
This is honestly one of the best videos you've made, you should definitely do more like it, but only for the games you were, or are passionate about.
One small thing about this game I noticed is that the skybox is based on where on the planet you are. With a ringed planet, you’ll see more or less of the ring depending on your latitude, and moons will only be able to be seen from one side of the planet
You also get the super credits in bunkers that are on the planets! Something that you can grind for instead of paying something that I love.
Your enthusiasm, the production value, theming and the amazing showcase of everything you had to talk about all came together so well. This actually has to be one of my favourite game review/overview videos that I've seen in ages. Amazing propaganda too, you've gone and convinced me to play it haha!
The way they handle lore is amazing how it develops dynamically by the players
7:50 No those are actually real players. They did not need to add that but they did. It was figured out when a bug happened and only a handful of people could login. There was a lot less ships in orbit or in the sky.
Another detail you didn't mention that I love: when you use the jetpack, it actually singes the bottom of your cape.
The sponsored segment is one of few where I now want to buy the product. Please do more like this
The gunplay is super satisfying and *actually* punishes you for firing on the move, as well as making common dumb-looking videogame tactics like "strafe spamming" far more difficult, which encourages you to take a knee or go prone for maximum accuracy.
This video feels like a serenade you wrote for a game you're so in love with
The moment part three played the ori music gave me nostalgia when I used to play that game as a kid
Using the Ori music as background music for showing off the terrain is perfect.
Doing the ad while playing a game as chaotic as this is a brilliant way to get people to watch 😂
Great video jay! Would love to see more video essays like this in the future!
Genuinely one of the greatest sponsorship sections I have ever seen in a TH-cam video
Ramble and rant as much as you please.
It shows how much passion you have for this game.
I would love to see more helldivers 2 videos! Best game I've played in a while
If us super citizens/hell jumpers can join sometime, this may be the greatest game so far this year.
I definitely think your mention of invite only lobbies is also important.
Melee may actually be a thing in the works.
It's become such an experience, a reminder of the fun we had when playing with friends in school
That might be my favourite ad-read ever on this site
I was waiting for this video. I knew this game would be right up your alley. Just the right combination of violence, co-op, and silliness.
Hearing that filk music was like a flashbang. Leslie fish and her ilk are my favorite music artists. Good taste helldiver
I can't tell you how many times I was just walking around on one of the planets and said out loud "Man, this game is GORGEOUS"
funny thing about the "you can land stratagems on enemies" thing is from what I've seen only hellpod type stratagems track the target, all others look like they're tracking (orbitals, eagles ect) but will still land where you initially hit the stratagem, so use stuff like sentries, emplacements, support weapons/backpacks and resupplies if you want a tanky target dead in a pinch and can stick it onto that enemy, chargers and annihilator tanks are the easiest in my experience since they both have front facing armor thats very easy to stick stratagems to, bile titans and hulks are harder cause of their taller slimmer profile, but if you've got a good throwing arm I'm sure you can stick a resupply to a titan
The use of the Ori and the Blind Forest soundtrack was perfect for the terrain section. One of my all time favorite video game soundtracks!
The dedication of the Devs to creating a living universe is a testement to them and a sign of the greatness that his game can ascend to
22:32 it’s not obvious or anything but there actually is a way to make your lobby private by going into settings, it’s been nice for getting friends in now that matchmaking actually works
There's a mop bucket at my job that has rubix engraved in it. Everytime I see it I think of your content.
Loved the use of Ori music during the part 3 montage.
That part 3 opening edit was sick. Perfectly encapsulates the epicness
End credits were so amazing I actually sat through and watched it all. Very well done.
My main personal hope is a weapon upgrade system, just something similar to the first game where they're straight upgrades, like bayonet or bigger magazines.
I think the devs said they definitely want to add that as well and maybe the option to customise armour colours.
