Fantastic! The best music class I have ever had in my life. Since my youth (I´m now 69), as an amateur, I´ve been playing Brazilian Popular Music in my acoustic guitar, using dozens of altered chords by song and writing songs as well. The Oliver Prehn channel - whcih I just found a few days ago - is definitely opening my mind to actually understand what I´ve been doing and mostly opening horizons. Thank you very much, Oliver. Have a nice life!!!
Hi Oliver, I would like to tell you a thousand words. Unfortunately my little English dictionary does not allow me. Then I will use only four words: you are an angel! For now, a huge THANK YOU Oliver !!! Ciaoooooo!
I don't know what to say. Thank you very much Oliver Prehn. So now we have Harmonic Major. I'm so excited. Every day before, I do Major scale, Harmonic minor, Melodic Minor and Pentatonic, all modes and memorise all over the fretboard, now I will add Harmonic Major to my routine exercise. I learn 7 modes Harmonic Minor and Harmonic Major from you.
I used photo paper, poster material from the dollar store, glue stick (also from the dollar store) to get it rigid, then from the dollar store, I got some little fasteners from a craft store.
Hi Oliver, you're just awesome being of tremendous help in so many ways and such a humble guy. RESPECT and thank you for you passion and everything else

wow, phenomenal concept for exploration. you can firmly hear how the different scales mirror chord progressions through the possible movements of the parts
Another fabulous entry, sir! So many ideas from this. I especially like the way you use your improvisations to highlight/relate the sound of the scale against the chord being played in the left hand. Once again, great stuff, Oliver! :-D
What a great lesson! Thank you Sir! Certainly worth a donation for sure! I encourage people to donate! These lessons and tools are invaluable. Oh and Nupfe....thank you as well. Nice job on the wheels. They look like fun. I am going to put them together. Thanks again!

Excelent top quality content! After years and years of studying music never saw scare theory explained so well, simple and systematic. you should start writing a book compiling all of your improvisation methods! PS: By the way, I also LOVE some other scales that break some of your "rules" for improvising, e.g. the hungarian scale (Step, ½step, 1 and ½ step, ½ step, ½ step, 1and ½ step, ½ step) which breaks the 3rd rule, and "Lydian Dominant #2" (?) which breaks the 5th rule.
Hi and thanks a lot!!! The 5 rules are just to narrow down the field of study. With the 5 rules we achieve some very simple harmonic scales without too many enharmonic interpretations. The scales that breaks the rules are just as valid and interesting as any other scale, that's for sure ;) Warm regards Oliver

As of the date of my comment, already two thumbs down. It never ceases to amaze me that there are people who contribute nothing, and yet want to sling mud at those who do such great good in the world, such as people like you, Oliver. This is a great video! Thank you!
Very good job, once again Oliver. Thank you a thousand times for the quality of your tutorials. I do not get tired of working on your methods. A question about these different scales : do you have a trick to navigate easily in the fingerings? A bit like the minor pentatonic scale ...
Hi and thanks a lot :) Often I play Major triad structures/hand grips when playing the scales from the last 3 families. For example in this lesson we play Major triads on the "melodic minor modes": th-cam.com/video/3FcuCR14Lmw/w-d-xo.html
I master less fingering, I studied much less. So far I have referred a lot to this technique (th-cam.com/video/EJaG-rmHzB8/w-d-xo.html). So I know what I have to do next weeks :) Thank you very much for your answer Oliver. See you soon, and with pleasure !
Oliver, I started to learn piano because of you. Your are the perfect teacher,: plain explenations ,accurate and with the right pace. My friends are so amazed to know my "piano Maestro" is a bus driver in Denmark. I have just 2 questions to ask: 1) it's possible to reuse the min. penthatonic scales not just for the dorian scale but also for the other 6 major church modes? 2) and for the other 3 discs? it's possible to do the same with other 3 correspondent 5 tones simpler scales? Thank you again.
Hi and thanks a lot :) I'm so glad that you can use my teaching :) :) :) I think the pentatonic grip is most suited for the Major modes (the first disc). You can of course try to alter the pentatonic grip to make it fit - but the pentatonic 'power' will not be the same anymore. Often I play triads, especially Major triads when improvising on the other families. Try and look for triads that fits the scales. The melodic minor family has two Major triads build into every scale. The harmonic minor family has two. And the Harmonic Major family has three...
Oliver: today I have finished the translation of this lesson, "Explore the Scales with 4 smart tools", from the Englisn to the Latinoamerican Spanish. I hope you give your approvement. Fernando Barbosa, Colombia- South America
This would make a fantastic iOS/Android app. You could include the basic scales with the free app, and allow the other three to be bought via in-app purchase. Seriously! DO It!!! 😀
Amazing... The great picture shows that bridge between complex and complicated. Complex is about getting lost in the chaos without any guidance. Complicated is about hard to grasp univers but with some universal rules. I thought that Jazz was complex, thanks to you Oliver, we realize that is it "complicated" but with tenacity, training and inspiration (from you) we may explore and understand some inner parts of this ruled based system !! I remember in one of your lesson you mentioned that new music can be created outside of this system, breaking the rules that defines the 28 scales... I'm looking forward to getting more on this discovery path.... But I have a burning question... now that I haved mastered the church mode with the minor pentatonic handgrip (lesson - Modal Theory - The 7 Church Modes Explained) after six months of hard work, the question is how may we use the pentatonic minor handgrip to explore the three others scale families ? In the lesson "HARMONIC MINOR MODES - Theory & Practice" you introduce how to position major triads (like in the Modal Theory - The 7 Church Modes Explained) but nothing on the minor pentatonic handgrip... This would be really helpful, If I may ask ;-) Is this possible by the way ? Or may be an other pentatonic handgrip for the purpose ? Again thanks so much for your lessons, really AMAZING !!!
Hi and thanks a lot :) Glad that I can make things "complicated" lol... The pentatonic hand grip is not so well suited for the 3 other families, I'm sorry about that... but the Major triads indeed are, as you already point out!!! Warm regards Oliver
Hello Oliver, I'm very excited by watching this video.. I had very much difficulty in memorizing the scales... But not anymore from now on!! Cheers to you and also to "nupfe" And how can I download the sheets to print..it is not actually taking me into those Weblinks. Thanks in advance!!

Oliver ,great as usual! Could I know what kind of keyboard/piano are you using? It seems that there is some sort of reverber and sustain/delay effects in your sound. It is a great sound,do you keep pushing the sustain pedal in order to obtain this very evocative sound? Thank you :-)
Hi and thanks a lot :) The keyboard is a ”Studiologic SL88”. It’s only a Midi keyboard, no sounds. The sound software runs on the PC. I use this software from Native Instruments: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/the-grandeur/ In this video I use the sustain pedal a lot so we can hear the timbre of each scale ;)
I'm sorry Oliver i had not read the last line of your comment, now I feel more comfortable since I know that you are using a lot of pedal because the only way to make my Yamaha p120 sound as your keyboards is to use a lot the sustain pedal !!! Thank you :-)
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! Beginner question - if you were improvising over a chord progression, would you use the same scale throughout over each chord or would you change it either depending on the chord or the chord type?
Hi and thanks a lot :) Good question. The answer is both I guess. Some times it's nice to alter the scales to break the tonality and spice things up a bit ;) In this other lesson about scales I do some examples on changing scales on each chord on the 2-5-1 chord progression. th-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/w-d-xo.html Chees from Oliver

at 23:26 "1/2 steps can not be neighbors" makes the "Double Harmonic Major" : 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7 and "Neapolitan minor" and "Neap Major" illegal scales. I think that a scale, in different of mode, should have 1 4 5 7 ( the 2 3 and 6 can be dim, min, maj or aug), because the V degree has a tritone tension that resolves to the tonics. What is your opinion ?
Hi :) There is no illegal scales!!! I just made some assumptions for good harmonic behavior to narrow down the subject and the number of scales. By the way please notice that the 7 different degrees of the double harmonic major has many enharmonic interpretations when it comes to the chords/harmonies... Best regards Oliver

Firstly, I must thank you so very much for your phenomenal content and all the effort you put into it.
I spent some time this afternoon writing some code to identify all permutations of intervals which comply with the rules you list at 23:58.
Perhaps I'm missing something but I was amazed that it is completely true that the resulting list was these 28 scales.
I'm amazed because my (apparently rudimentary) understandings (below) of how
-we arrived at the harmonic minor scale (we wanted the natural minor scale to have the leading tone from the major scale so we sharpened the seventh)
and
-we arrived at the melodic minor scale (we didn't like the minor third interval introduced in the harmonic minor so we raised the 6th before the 7th)
-(and I assume) we arrived at the harmonic major by simply raising the 3rd from the harmonic minor
that when complying with these rules all permutations are covered by the modes of these 3 scales and the major scale.
I'm baffled. But so grateful to learn so much from you. All the best!

I think the pentatonic grip is most suited for the Major modes (the first disc).

Regarding the Melodic Ascending Minor circle, do the rest of the modes vary when descending, or does that only occur for the melodic minor itself?
Hi :) The melodic minor modes are all considered fixed in this case - the same scale up and down ;)

Hello Oliver, I'm very excited by watching this video.. I had very much difficulty in memorizing the scales... But not anymore from now on!! Cheers to you and also to "nupfe"
And how can I download the sheets to print..it is not actually taking me into those Weblinks.
Thanks in advance!!
Hi and thank you so much :) The links work fine here - maybe try to go to a PC - or try to copy paste the url to a browser... Or go to www.newjazz.dk (my website), locate the video and follow the download links below that video. Cheers from Oliver
@@NewJazz i can download it from your website.. a million thanks from my side.
I'm very much blessed to find your TH-cam channel.. have been watching the videos for hours in a day without getting diverted.🎹🎹🙏🙏
I use this software from Native Instruments: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/the-grandeur/
In this video I use the sustain pedal a lot so we can hear the timbre of each scale ;)
@@NewJazz Your sound it really sounds GRANDEUR :-) So you don't pratically use no pedal is just all incluse in the software effect,ma I correct?
I'm sorry Oliver i had not read the last line of your comment, now I feel more comfortable since I know that you are using a lot of pedal because the only way to make my Yamaha p120 sound as your keyboards is to use a lot the sustain pedal !!! Thank you :-)
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! Beginner question - if you were improvising over a chord progression, would you use the same scale throughout over each chord or would you change it either depending on the chord or the chord type?
Hi and thanks a lot :) Good question. The answer is both I guess. Some times it's nice to alter the scales to break the tonality and spice things up a bit ;) In this other lesson about scales I do some examples on changing scales on each chord on the 2-5-1 chord progression. th-cam.com/video/Vq2xt2D3e3E/w-d-xo.html

Hello , thank you Oliver for all the great lessons! does anybody has the emaildress of "nupfe " concerning the tools ?
Hi and thanks a lot :) You can find 'nupfes' email on this page: www.newjazz.dk/nupfe.html
Best regards from Oliver
@@NewJazz When I click on the "nupfe " link it does nothing on my pc ? maybe a email adress will work ?
@@Henrishammonds Hi. The link works great from here. Maybe try to copy paste the url to your browser...
I will not write any email in here because then bots may pic it up and use it for spam. I hope you succeed with the link, else you can find my email at www.newjazz.dk (top right) and you can send me an email... Best regards from Oliver
@@NewJazz Hello , neighter yours or "nupfe"s link are responding , probabely this mail "account" is never activated on my PC , so it disappears directly when I tab on it. Happy New Year and a healthy 2021 !

Happy New Year :) :) :)
Very cool, could someone make an app for those circles?
That could be nice!!!
at 23:26 "1/2 steps can not be neighbors" makes the "Double Harmonic Major" : 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7
and "Neapolitan minor" and "Neap Major" illegal scales.
I think that a scale, in different of mode, should have 1 4 5 7 ( the 2 3 and 6 can be dim, min, maj or aug),
because the V degree has a tritone tension that resolves to the tonics.
I'm curious why the 7th mode of the melodic minor (altered scale) has a 7 alt as the chord and not a half-diminished.
Correct we could also write on the mi7b5 chord (an enharmonic interpretation) - this chord also fits the 7th mode. Thanks for your input!!!
Great stuff. Now if there was a viewer to make apps from them... Asking too much, I know.
