The Canaanite Woman

  • In Matthew 15 Jesus has a somewhat bizarre and mysterious encounter with the Canaanite Woman. When the Canaanite Woman asks Jesus for help to heal her her daughter, he responds by saying that he came for lost sheep of Israel and just as you do not give food to the dogs, so too, he could not help the Canaanite woman.
But, due to her persistence, he ends up healing her daughter.
What do we make of this encounter of Jesus and the Canaanite Woman? Watch this video with Dr. Brant Pitre and find out.

This commentary is wonderful and provides so many insights and biblical references. Dr. Pitre is one of the most brilliant theologians whom I really respect and this passage in the Gospel about Our Blessed Lord and the Canaanite woman is very striking and mysterious. Imagine my chagrin when the video ended before the conclusion. I hope we get the next part too. Praise God for the work of Dr Pitre.

I find it most interesting how reference to JESUS 10 times and the woman was persistent in her mission to free her child from the demon-crats by asking three times with adoration, hope and FAITH. FAITH being her strong point in paying homage, and asking JESUS showing humility and allegence in her third request. Similarly, we've found thst others throughout the OT and NT who also were not Hebrew and JESUS blessed them via their Persistent FAITH (a Grace) from GOD, which JESUS surely recognized SPIRITUALLY.
EXAMPLES Include: the Centurian desiring the healing of his servant, the old women giving a mit - all she had, the women with the bleeding issue, Mary in the First Joyful Mystery, and then all the Mysteries, amongst many more. The point being those who display GREAT Hope, Love and FAITH are rewarded in kind. Those without, not so much, for their lack of investing in the Goodness of GOD+++

I think this kind of men/women arguing with God or Jesus for mercy, even if undeserved, is characteristic of the Bible. In the Book of Genesis (18:23-33), for example, Abraham pleads with God to spare the people of Sodom if there were to be only 10 innocent men among them and God does relent. Unfortunately in Sodom there were apparently none, but the Canaanite woman had a mother's deep love for her child on her side

I've always thought that Jesus and the woman had an understanding between them, that he was playing a role to make a point to the others and that she was playing along with him though remaining sincere in her request. Such a moving account.

    • @jerryg3524
      @jerryg3524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think you're right about Jesus playing a role. But I don't agree that the Canaanite woman was; in fact, she had no idea how Jesus would react. Isn't that the whole point of this Gospel teaching? Seems Jesus plaed a role to see what reaction He got from her. And bingo! She said the right thing because of her faith.

generally , in some languages nouns are either male or female, no? I have learned my church identifies as "female" being described as the bride, right? So when I hear this passage explained to me by Dr. Pitre the story that I tell myself is
the Canaanite woman is a sort of symbolism or allagory or collected metafore that describes our church as a group. Yes, US.
After all we all are sinners, doing stuff that's bad as the Canaanite's . We all fall short, all a bit dog too ...woof wolf in sheeps clothing and without Jesus... we are made of the same stuff as dogs. To help you understand better, the word dog in ancient Greek is κύων but the suffix -άριον is used in diminutive nouns, meaning words that express smaller or more tender forms of the object they describe.
    For example:
"δάκτυλος" (finger) → "δακτύλιον" (small finger) "κύων" (dog) → "κυνάριον" (small dog/puppy)
"πλοῖον" (ship) → "πλοιάριον" (small ship)
This suffix gives the word a diminutive or affectionate character, often indicating something smaller or cuter than usual. So the word dog here is meant as a loving puppy

    An outsider
    Outcast
    Sinner
    Looked down upon
Yet she knew who God was and knew even the scraps of Gods love would be powerful enough to heal her daughter. She proclaimed Gods mercy. Jesus let her do so as an act of faith. His silence was as always a space for others to witness how to ask God for all He has .

  • @biblestoryforchildrenbyrj1967
    @biblestoryforchildrenbyrj1967 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think Jesus did not mean to say harshly, but to use words to mean a spontaneous response. The "dog" in this sentence when seen from the original Greek, connotes small dog, or domestic dog, and does not mean dog in general (there are two types of dog connotations in Greek). So the main purpose of the sentence is to show priority to the children first, then to the small dog / pet. So this sentence is not meant to be harassing, it only indicates the order of feeding.
Jesus' first concern was devoted to the nation of Israel (see also Matt. 10: 6) to save them as the fulfillment of God's promise mentioned in the Old Testament, and only then was that salvation directed also to other nations. Although his main focus was the nation of Israel, Jesus did not limit his ministry, and Jesus also directed His attention and work of salvation to the Gentiles, for example in the miraculous healing of a centurion's servant in Capernaum (Luke 7: 1-10); and Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman (John 4) and of course, His last message before ascending to heaven to His disciples was that they spread the gospel to all nations (Matt. 28: 19-20).
    warm regards from Indonesia.

Simple fact is when Mothers are aborting their babies voluntarily then there is something extremely wrong. The problem we should be addressing is what circumstances brings them to the point where they would prefer not to give them life at all, and why aren't they speaking?
The more money you take the more laws you can break is the theme of this paradigm. Only allowing those who pay to be educated in their schools the right to be certified felons for a living their motivation is driven by a pure animal instinct to hold control over their pride. Competing for the most financial power the elite influence the politicians by promising campaign funds under the condition they pass laws which raise taxes, and fees for the services they provide.
The challenge is in order to maintain the illusion he is superior his DNA is programmed to automatically respond to subdue any threat to his dominant position. Triggering the flight or fight reaction depleting blood from the brain necessary to compute basic logic law enforcement becomes overwhelmed with the sensation to violently attack. Taking their competition to the point of death they hunt, and catch their prey inflicting brutal punishment.
Following the example of their superiors they learn to take advantage of their position of power, and target a certain class of people. Selling, manufacturing, and administering drugs taking advantage of their state of dependency they drain them of their resources to be released from the pain they inflict.
Sucking up all time to benefit them one after another the same hierarchy of heads who claim to protect the vunerable betray me beyond anything I thought possible. Forced to conform to a dictator to have access to resources I earn to survive was not part of the agreement, and breaking the silence nothing could be more cruel then to make false promises of protection, and equal rights only to bait me into a vunerable position once my child is born. I refuse to let my daughter think it is normal to be treated lower then a dog. She is only four, and she desrves a better life.
Rewarding himself the financial value of my time does not raise the judges intelligence above mine, and despite what Mr. Green had hoped to achieve serving as entertainment for his delusions of grandeur is not my priority. Crossing the line I am stripped of my title, and forbidden to speak. Appearing superior his law serves to commit sins against me not prevent them. These laws are for people who are sexually immoral, for homosexuals and slave traders, for liars and oath breakers, and for those who do anything else that contradicts the right teaching. 1:10 1st Timothy
It does not speak well for the effectiveness of the court in regards to apprehending the criminal when a prostitute convicted of murder is set free to take over my home, and use my four year old girl for “debt bondage" as the end result. Implying I should have to forfeit my American citizenship, and let dangerous criminals raise my child to teaching her to raid through homes, and steal property for a living is not the example I would choose to set as acceptable behavior. Just as you would not give all the boys control over the lunch money for the girls in a school setting the same should apply in the household for obvious reasons.
What grounds would the judge have to persecute me or more importantly my child for the problems which arise as a result of him officially taking responsibility as dictator? Left formless, and empty the darkness surrounds me, and as far as he knows I'm just a insignificant ghost who suffered, and died of immense torture forsaken. th-cam.com/video/vWQqwlX2TIY/w-d-xo.html Forced to provide his responsibilities for free had he done his job then why is a man claiming my body as his, and I am only a spirit. The Ark sparks a memory, and driven by pure instinct DNA is programmed to operate without the need for a logical brain, and as new threats present themselves they shape the species to automatically avoid certain behavior.
I’m a American Parent, and being a authority figure I rise above childish behavior with the intent to keep the vunerable from harm. They trust in me to protect them, and when my authority is honored I prevent violence eliminating the threat before a tragedy occurs. When my law is followed it serves to prevent pain, and if my intentions were to leave my child to suffer, and die I wouldn't bother establishing rules at all let alone raise her to life. th-cam.com/video/VkQAZ2qr6Gg/w-d-xo.html
Acknowledging the value of my time a true American Father would honor his vows to treat me as himself. Holding true to his pledge of allegiance he would make me a financial offer we both agreed upon, and I could invest my time into providing healthy activities to benefit my child's development instead. Improving the standard of living I would have the choice to
provide my child a safe home free of harmful influences which suggests resorting to violence aimed at authority is acceptable behavior, and would not be forced to tolerate abuse. Eliminating the possibility of damage caused by fear of being harmed will return the body to a normalized state naturally reducing the need to medicate. th-cam.com/video/kRBhg7Z9YR0/w-d-xo.html
For centuries my HOLY FAMILY OF DAVID have taught our children by example to be loyal to the LAW OF GOD, because we understand setting a poor example would jeopardize their lives. Being an authority figure I take full responsibility for my own actions, and understand I would not be given the right to pass JUDGMENT unless I could obey MY OWN LAW. th-cam.com/video/sgRWoYIVDRk/w-d-xo.html Giving the illusion he is “superior” he DISHONORS HIS VOWS providing justification to DISHONOR ME. Dare I claim value to be equal?

Very interesting but with Flaws, the disciples all hung around Jerusalem, there's No mention of other places. Paul who did travel and spread the word was chosen by Christ Jesus Act 9 verse 15 to go to the Gentiles. During Christ years on earth, there was temple worship and the 10 commandments were in full effect. Alot of adlibing and a cliffhanger, Really the word of God?

Jesus called the Canaanite woman “a dog” because he was racist and Jewish supremacist. And healed her when she agreed with him and shown her faith. Also he knew her heart and still called her a dog. Which means it’s not about being believer or not, it’s about the racial status of Canaanites. I’m open to discussion, change my mind.

So Jesus (God) called some of his own creation dogs?. Jesus never had to question any jew he healed. Not even those who were ungrateful (the blind men). The truth here is: Jesus was sent to the jews and not the world. religion is man made. Every religion creeates a racial supriority order for the people it originates from. religion is BS.
I see Jews feeling superior because of Abraham, Arabs because of Mohammed, Indians because of Budha etc. Lesson here is No race is superior to any other. Funny how europeans are trying to link the roots to the 12 tribes. Your are from europe and not Judea

They descended from Jacob/Israel, it was prophesied they would be scattered as the Sands of the Sea and to become a great Nation and Company of Nation. Their DNA is R-M 269. The same as the majority of Europeans with the highest concentrations in Ireland, Scotland, and the Germanic people.
