I like that drag chain idea and the quick on/off rod holder. I carry a waterproof box for my phone, wallet and spare non WP camera as well but... I keep mine tethered to the canoe just in case of a tip over in current. I used a carabiner on the attach end and an old bowstring for my tether as I have plenty of those :-)
i just bought one of those , Old Town Guide Solo 119 . it's exactly what i have been wanting to find .very good condition and only $300 ! can't wait to get it in the water !
I randomly came across this video and I can't believe you got the drag chain idea from blackwater Bill! He used to take my brother and I river fishing everywhere and fished in the tournament..He was my grandpa! So cool to see he reached alot of people in the outdoors! Especially in the fishing scene.
He put me on the drag chain and I put him on the 119 Old Town. I have a nice article he wrote about me putting him on the Old Town.. Wish i could have fished with him more,.
@@MackinNC1 yes! He loved that boat and it changed our fishing trips for the better! He would load that baby down with most of the tents and camping gear allowing my brother and I to focus solely on ripping lips. He opened my eyes to a true outdoorsman and go get em attitude! I would love to get together and fish sometime, I'm always out and about.
Nice setup. Mine is almost identical. I have the OT Pack 12 foot canoe with front and rear Scotty anchor locks like yours. I use Spring Creek outriggers so I don't tip over. Hummingbird fish finder and a Seatbacker canoe seat. I like your rod holder setup. Most of my fishing was on Maine trout ponds so I have regular anchors. However, now that I live in Virginia I may have to check out the drag chain.
Dang it man. Why did I watch this vid and subscribe to your channel? You made me go out and buy 2 of these canoes. One for me and my wife. Gonna do some river fishing! Love the vids. I notice you use a single paddle when you're on the 119, ever use a double blade kayak paddle on it?
yes I am 6'3 and fit in it fine. This is one of my blog posts and my late friend "Catawba " was tall and weighed 350 ish and he luved the 119....he said all the yaks he tried were no good. mackinncblog.blogspot.com/2012/04/smallie-time.html
My girlfriend uses a kayak paddle in her 119. Loves it. You'll get a few drips on you, so I suggest using the longest kayak paddle to cut down on that. Look for a touring paddle that's at least 250 cm long. But apart from a few drops of water on the legs, it's perfect. Really helpful when paddling into the wind.
How did you attach the cam cleat to the gunnel? I was assuming with rivets. And wouldn’t the straight cleat behind the cam cleat be ok by itself without the cam? I’m trying to save myself 40 bucks, lol. I have the same boat it’s a great solo canoe. Thanks
Hello Gregory, the cleat would be ok but when you are moving down a river it is alooooooot easier to use the cam cleat as you just pull up and to the side to lock the rope in.....it is attached with stainless steel screws. thanks for watching.
this canoe is 20 plus years old. they did not have the sportsman then ....Me and some boys in georgia modified these and old town copied us. I me and 1 other were using the 119's for fishing before Kayay fishing was even cool.
great to see someone sticken with the proper paddle for a canoe.
thanks for watching, Mack
Great setup! I too do my canoe fishing on rivers and most videos show setups that won’t work on live water. You gave me several ideas. Thanks
Thanks for watching. The set up worked well this past Friday...

Thanks for watching!!
Very cool Mack! Some great ideas!
Wholesome. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job...I fish an 14' old. Town osprey. Also use a drag chain on the river but like your setup better. Thanks for the. Improved idea. JRB.

I do use a double paddle on it some. My go0d friend Jeff uses a double on his 100 percent of the time. thanks for watching..Mack
Great rod holder idea
Nice boat; nice mods--fishin' machine!
the drag chain's another great idea... you might want to look at 4 or 5 pound cod weights... deep sea... make great anchors.
Thanks!
Nice job man ! Thanks from Ohio
Thanks for watching , please subscribe if you havnt
Very nice good job Mack,
I've never seen the small paddle like that. What did you call it?
they are called hand paddles/...
Did you film this video on the Haw at your old home place?
Yes I did.
Like your video. I'm 6fot2 can i fit in this canoe or should I go for something bigger?
I will be using it for fishing in small lakes.

Nice set up ! I use a small pulley and different sizes of old cast window weights for river fishing, but I like the chain ! Do you snag often ?
I have never had it snag where I could not pull it loose easily. And it has rarely even snagged , maybe 3 times? and it was just for a few moments.
What size chain do you use? 3/8th?
I dont know the size but it is usually the biggest the hardware store has
What do you think about using a kayak paddle with a 119? pros/cons?
I do some, prefer the canoe paddle but my buddy jeff use a kayak paddle with his 119 and luvs it.

Great video! Great mods! K.I.S.S.
Which Old Town is this please? Is it the Discovery?
Thanks
Yes, old town 119 is a discovery.
Why not just get the 119 sportsman
this canoe is 20 plus years old. they did not have the sportsman then ....Me and some boys in georgia modified these and old town copied us. I me and 1 other were using the 119's for fishing before Kayay fishing was even cool.
That would explain it.
It sounds like they hold up good
Gunwale is pronounced as, "Gunnel".
not in the South.
Mate, I live in Australia. That's about as South as it gets.
that is a good ways south but the the Southern USA is where it is at.
Gunwale or Gunnel, it's spelled either way here in England, but as it's an old English nautical term I'd agree with Craig on the pronunciation.
Glad you didn't waste space on a landing net.
