In Indonesia, tilapia is usually the main target of freshwater fish anglers. Even though the fish grow and get bigger in the drainage channel, we still fish for them and eat the tilapia. If there were 100 Indonesian fishermen there, it would be certain that the tilapia fish in the drain would be gone in one day 😅😅 To cook it, we usually only use grated garlic, coriander powder and a little salt, then fry it in hot oil. After that we eat it with chili sauce and hot rice, it's very delicious.
That's the most elaborate recipe for tilapia I have ever seen. Usually all I did with tilapia is to throw all the organs, wash the fish clean, apply salt and lime juice, and deepfry. Serve with rice and hot condiments.
Back then I caught Tilapia from a watercress farm where my dad worked at. The water was always flowing in some places faster than others. But majority of the time the water was clear and didn't have many murky or muddy places. Many of the big fish were in the high current ones and never where the water was semi still or slow moving. When you caught them they didn't smell at all. But once they died and such. It smelt like many... many things... but overall if you clean them out fast enough and thoroughly. The smell was next to none and taste much better.
3:29 Dude, you're brave. Here in the Philippines the 60+ generation who grew up in rice farms _never_ eat tilapia. My Bisaya grandmother was personally disgusted by it because it estivates in mud and gets washed into the roads or the embankment of their paddies during heavy rains. Apparently only us Tagalogs have a taste for it, and only because it's farmed in Laguna de Ba-y and other minor lakes. Even then the lakes aren't exactly pollution-free. But I don't think I'll ever have the guts for sewer tilapia no matter how thorough you clean them up 😁😁😁 That said, if I do get my hands on tilapia I can trust I'll cook it the same way you did. I like how easy you made fileting a fish look. Thanks for the idea!
They live in dirty water but if you raise them in clean water they are not dirty at all. Personally I would not eat any fish in Philippine rivers not just Tilapia due to the pollution.
In Brazil tilapia is a favorite fish among Brazilians, they are easy to maintain, get fat fast probably cause they eat too much of...everything. yet it's delicious fried and in Brazil it's common to eat as sashimi like 75% of sushi places will sell as sashimi, tho the tilapia's used on restaurants are of course farmed they aren't wild tilapia, but even wild ones are eaten as sashimi as well they just aren't sold on restaurants
its a common fish in my country. its tasty and everyone here know how to handle it so it doesnt stink at all. but yeah the common way to enjoy it is by frying or roasting it, every household atleast have experience cooking tilapia (its called Nila fish here)
Farmed tilapia is actually good. You can fry, steam, boil, and grill it like any other fish and it will taste good. Deboning tilapia is also very easy since they have quite big and sturdy bones for their size.
That tartar sauce is interesting but it’s actually more of an egg salad bc of the hard boiled egg. Tartar sauce (please try!): mayo, a dallop of Dijon mustard, diced onion, diced pickle, quarter of a lemon (juice), a small bit of diced caper, dash pepper. Let chill until fish is ready.
"But poop and dead stuff are all just proteins made of the same amino acids in the end. We break them down into amino acids and consume them, so the process doesn't matter. Let's keep telling ourselves that. Otherwise I'll be someone who eats poop!" This was hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
I'm female, not a fan of fish, still following since 2 years ago. I bought tilapia fish & chips from a street vendor a few weeks ago. My dad said it smelled. I hope it wasn't sewage tilapia. Here in Malaysia, at least where I'm from, it's not uncommon to see people farm tilapias in their garden. My dad did it until he was tired of the fish.
Masaru-san I was kinda surprised when I saw you wear such stylish clothing. Not only it looks good but also what a brave choice since you were going to handle raw fish hahaha. Btw I just realized that Tilapia is called Nila in my place. Usually, restaurants served it fried or grilled (this one quite expensive most of the time, at least for my wallet). Personally, I don't like the taste when I order one. Wrong recipe maybe, kinda flavorless with a bit of weird aftertaste. It's freshwater kind of fish like catfish but I'd prefer the latter.
Hi Masaru! I am an overseas viewer and I was wondering if you had heard of the "wet hand/dry hand" technique when breading fried food. You can use one hand for all of the dry ingredients (the flour and breadcrumbs) and the other for the wet ingredients (the eggs) so that your fingers don't get covered in breading. Anyways, I love your videos. Thank you!
Farmed tilapia is almost a staple in every household here in the Philippines 🇵🇭. It is usually served as Fried or grilled and it tastes really great!!! The grilled one is honestly my favorite, just lather it in salt before grilling and when served dip it in soy sauce with calamansi 🤤 Long time Fan here!! I was always waiting for you to make a video about this fish.
I grew up preparing and eating farmed and sewage-grew tilapia hence I never noticed its the bad smell. Its actually kind of sweet everytime we have it cuz its prepared fresh everytime (we buy live tilapia in wet market and live tilapia from fishermen). If the tilapia is big, we grill it. If its palm-sized, we deep fry it. If its baby tilapia, we marinate it to dry and fry.
Here in America tilapia is the fourth most popular fish, and while McDonalds doesn't have a Tilapia Filet-O-Fish (yet!) another fast food chain called Captain D's does have a tilapia meal. Besides being tasty, tilapia also has skin that can be used to heal burns in people and animals, so all around great marks for this fish!
Yeah this was an interesting recipe for tartar sauce. I always assumed it was mayo, with capers, dill, pickles, lemon, and mustard. Never seen boiled eggs in it.
The itch spreads because you're scratching histamines all over from the origin site. Even explaining that to my 7-year-old, he'll still stealth-scratch everything, lol. We have to slather a pound of aloe all over that part of his body for him to stop. 😂
Sadly I'm one of those people that are allergic to the bites and react worse than others. The itching doesn't go away, they keep swelling up bigger and bigger, and get so hot it burns, so ignoring doesn't actually bring any relief - I have to either use preventative measures in excess, or slather myself in goo, too. They get to the size of silver dollars, and super huge and raised, extra hot to the touch. It's the WORST! And its even worse because they LOVE my blood. Always been a huge target, so much so that they focus on me over anyone else in an area.
You should buy some Bactine insect spray. It is a topical numbing solution that stops all itches. Or you can use deodorant with aluminum tetrachloride in it. This also stops itching outright.
In Indonesia, large tilapia fish are caught with moss bait. Cooked by frying without flour or grilling. if fried until crispy, the bones can be eaten too.
We get farmed tilapia in the US, they're delicious in my opinion, but yeah, they do eat gross stuff. They sometimes use them alongside farmed salmon because they clean up salmon waste, but it's better than random garbage, and I'd imagine they "purge" them a bit before sending them to market. And if they don't, well they still taste pretty good, but I wouldn't want to catch one near a water pipe.
My sister-in-law’s family served probably the tastiest Tilapias I’ve ever had. They were farm-raised in the rural part of northern Malaysia, family owned business. It was during lunch, Tilapias three way - barbecued, steamed and fried. I ate one whole fish for each one. So good 🤤
A tip from someone in the united states and grew up in South florida, the more you invest in transport and water type, the better for the fish, using a bubbler to add oxygen to the water and making sure that the water level is high enough to reduce stress, can help with the fish lasting the one or two weeks with a pump and 2 extra buckets filled with fresh water. Hope this helps!
I live in Midwestern Canada and there's not much fresh fish in supermarkets (this is red meat country). Frozen tilapia is the cheapest and most common fish you can get. It has a reputation for being farmed in really unsanitary conditions in third world countries. Personally I think it's mushy and tastes like mud, but to each his own.

Just For Advise, if you're going to freeze your freshwater fish from fishing in wild or mudpond. it's better to remove the organs and waste materials before, it will make sure the bacteria not spreading and no fermentation happens in their stomatch. the smell caused by the waste materials in side their stomatch fermented, you need to remove the waste before freeze them. i can eat tipalia 2-3times in a week. that's taste good for Indonesian people like me. and that will taste much away better if you make grilled tilapia (Nila Bakar : in Indonesia) :D
Masarau a tip for you brother here in Tanzania 🇹🇿 we have so many Tilapia both wild and farmed. They aint gross at all and we love em boiled, the soup is astonishingly delicious try it out. Now a tip for fishing tilapia, because you re using a fishing rod use Grasshoppers as bait you will be amazed how fast they bite.

But I bet you usually don't eat tilapia that's chugging raw sewage so they wouldn't need so much prep
you just raw dogging the sewage tilapia, man..?? 😟
Adds more flavor 😂
Same here in Brazil!
well if its from clean river or lake then there should be no problem. but poop sewage Tilapia? idk if i will even try to cook that.

Terima kasih masaru sudah mengabulkan permintaanku soal memancing ikan sungai 😂

As a Thai person, I never knew the gift from the Emperor himself lives in the sewer in its homeland🤣
Furthermore, I never knew a fish that eats sewage has so much culinary potential!
