The band with Garcia, Saunders, Fierro and Kahn played 135 known dates (some with early & late shows) between Winterland 10/3/73 and Keystone Berkeley 7/6/75 (or possibly GAMH 7/30/75). Bill Kreutzmann was the band's first drummer (38 shows from 10/3/73 to 9/2/74 ), followed by Paul Humphrey (28 shows from 10/11/74 to 11/30/75) and then Ron Tutt (51 shows from 12/6/74 to 7/6/75). At least eight other drummers filled in: Bill Vitt (1) , E.W. Wainwright (2), Tom Donlinger (2), Jim Nelson (4), Gaylord Birch (3), Danny Selwell (1), Bob Steller (1), Greg Errico (1), unknown (4). Contractually speaking, only the band with Tutt is properly called Legion of Mary but the actual band itself is defined by the presence of Martin Fierro and their uniquely jazzy repertoire. The band had four periods of intensive activity: the formatiion: October 1973 thru March 1974; and summer 74 (June thru September), both with Kreutzmann; the Fall 74 LA and East Coast tour with Humphrey (October-November) and the Tutt era -- West Coast tour (December 74 to March 75 ) and East Coast tour (April 75). The band is at its most relaxed, organic, comfortable and engaged in Summer 74, playing steady, -- 7 shows at Keystone Berkeley, two at the Lion's Share, 5 at GAMH and one each at BCT, UC Davis and, climactically, in Marx Meadow, Golden Gate Park on Sept. 2 -- 17 home gigs in three months -- while Jerry and Billy also played 18 Dead shows. This GAMH show finds them in peak form.
